Unit 1 Study Guide USI.2 Geography Skills

Continents are large land masses surrounded by water. There are seven continents: North America, South America, Africa, Europe, Asia, Australia, and Antarctica. Europe is considered a continent even though it is not entirely surrounded by water. The land mass is frequently called Eurasia.

There are five oceans. Atlantic, Pacific, Arctic, Indian, and Southern. Each ocean has special characteristics. Let’s look:

Atlantic Ocean

Fast, strong currents. Served as a highway for explorers, settlers, & immigrants. Closest to Virginia.

Pacific Ocean

Largest of the oceans.

Served as an early exploration destination.

Arctic Ocean

Smallest of the oceans.

Contains Polar ice caps.

Indian Ocean

Between Africa & southern Asia and Australia.

Southern Ocean

Southern = Bottom

Encircles Antarctica.

Added as an ocean in 2000.

You need to be able to find the continents & oceans on a map.

There are many different types of maps. Each one stretches the continents in different ways in order to make it flat. The map below is called a Robinson Projection. There is only one problem with this type of map. Can you find it? Circle the problem.

If you look at the map you will notice vertical and horizontal lines. What are they?

LATITUDE

LONGITUDE

Parallels of latitude are the lines on a map or globe that identifies how far north or south a location is from the Equator 0.

Each line is marked in degrees. These degrees go from 0 to 90.

Meridians of Longitude are the lines on a map or globe that identifies how far east or west a location is from the prime meridian or 0.

Each line is marked in degrees. These degrees go from 0 to 180.

A person that draws a map is called a cartographer.
