Technology Usage Abroad
University of Missouri Virtual Private Networking (VPN)
VPN software enables a device to connect to a remote network, such as accessing the university’s network from home. This process allows the device to be assigned an IP address on the host network, and behave as if it was on the host network. While abroad this will be helpful for many things:
To use the VPN service on a pc or mac all that is necessary is a visit to “anyconnect.missouri.edu” and following the onscreen instructions; on a mobile device more steps are necessary and can be found in the DOIT knowledge base.
-
iOS; Search the DOIT knowledge base for “041218116441056”
-
Android; Search the DOIT knowledge base for “041218114323004”
Please note: I am not able to test the Android version of this software and due to the many iterations of android it is impossible to predict how well it will function on every device; your mileage may vary.
Cellular phone technology is a staple in our modern times; unfortunately international usage is more of a nightmare than a useful experience.
IT IS HIGHLY ADVISED THAT YOU PLAN WHEN BRINGING YOUR CELLPHONE
Although your cellphone “might” function abroad (particularly ATT customers and smartphone users) the cost is extreme, streaming a single YouTube video can cost as much as little as $1200 and you will get no warning. If you choose to bring your self phone, check with your carrier for cost for particular features and options for temporary international plans, as of this writing (MAR 2013) I am aware that Sprint and ATT offer international texting plans for a low fee. Also if you wish to bring your phone but disable the data and phone usage.
Wi-Fi
Wi-Fi is common the world over, and there will be many places abroad where you can gain access to the Internet. Please be aware that there may be a fee or policies to these networks you may be unaware of. Additionally, in some countries attaching to a Wi-Fi network without permission or creating an unsecure Wi-Fi network, is a CRIME and punishable by the laws of the HOST country. Please take care when finding Internet access.
