A. That’s why I am a goth.
B. They are not a threat.
C. Attraction of Gothdom subculture.
D. Goths wear silver chains because…
1. Wearing black clothing, white face-paint and black lipstick is mere play-acting for most members of the subculture called Gothdom. “Every day is Halloween for a Goth,” said Diana, a Gothic-Punk follower drawn to the movement by the dress, music and “the romance of death.” Local cult expert Rand Johnson, a West Jordan police captain, said every high school in Salt Lake Valley boasts a few Goths. Most are harmless, but a few can become a danger to themselves and others. “The Goths are fascinated with the darker side of life – with the grotesque, the mysterious, the desolate,” Johnson said. “There is a fascination with graveyards, death and moody music.”
2. Johnson said that only a small percentage of Goths participate in ritual bloodletting, animal sacrifices and the worship of Satan. “Gothdom is primarily a form of rebellion, escapism – a hobby. And if it is not taken to the point of obsession, it’s not a problem,” Johnson said. Explains a female Goth on an Internet homepage: “Gothic for me is a release from the stress of having to be the perfect student, the perfect daughter, etc. I have always been rebellious... and was drawn to Gothic music, clothing, and a way of looking at life.”
3. Are Goths a threat to society? Salt Lake Police Sgt. Chuck Gilbert said: “We haven’t had any trouble with the Goths. They’re mostly kids preoccupied with death who wear a lot of white, black and purple makeup. They really don’t focus on committing crimes, and for the most part they aren’t what we would classify as a gang. They’re just real bizarre and, for the most part, they’ve been harmless.”

- Do your parents like music?
- Yes, they do. They like both classic and popular music. But my tastes differ 1 …………………..They prefer the music of their youth performed by Joe Cocker, the "Beatles" or something of that kind. They do not like chaos, rap or tech, which my generation chooses.
- Do you often quarrel with your parents?
- No, I prefer to settle all our problems peacefully. Sometimes the best tactics is not to contradict the parents while doing what I think is important. It is not always necessary that parents should know that I disagree with them. But very often my friends are unable to follow this pattern, especially those who hate compromises and do not like 2 ……………
- Do you think that a generation gap can be bridged?
- I doubt that a generation gap can ever be bridged. But I think that some concessions on both sides are possible. Sometimes older generations are important for young people because they can 3 …………. Parents are also providing their children with pocket money. That is why the young should not be too impatient when older people teach them what to do, what to wear or how to think. Tolerance is the only way 4 ……………..
- Do you think that people can live without problems?
- Problem is the result of the activity of human mind. Only a simpleton can have no problems and be happy with everything. Nothing will come of nothing. Problems are inevitable when people do something. I think that without problems our life 5 …………………..Moreover, when people start to cope with different problems they become stronger and more experienced. They harden like steel while overcoming problems. I do not think that life without problems 6 …………
A to make concessions to their parents
B from the preference of my parents
C to contradict the parents

I have never imagined that there are so many music styles and 1 ……………….. I have only known something about Goths, that they are people who like to wear the blackest black and lots of silver jewellery. I begin to understand why this subculture is 2 …………………….They start to analyse their life and become dissatisfied with it.
With the Internet, appeared the subculture of hackers. I think that every teenager would be proud to belong to this community, because these people are considered 3 ……………………. But the mod subculture was a complete novelty for me. I couldn’t even imagine that young people who study mostly at different colleges and prefer to wear fashionable clothes can 4 ………………..
Sometimes it is very difficult to tell to which subculture a person belongs. As for the skinheads, it is easy because they cut their hair shorter than others. Some people think that they are patriotic, but others say that the only thing they want to do is to fight. A hippie subculture isn’t popular anymore; today their community is 5 …………………. I also think that every subculture has its own musical style. For example, mods listen to soul music, hackers prefer different types of music, ravers prefer computer-made, synthesised music and drugs to create massive all-night dance parties in empty warehouses. Hippies are fans of rock-and-roll. My friends and I don’t belong 6 …………………, A different subcultures

SUCCESS STORY
J. O. Cozzen
I met Richards ten or more years ago when I first went down to Cuba. He was a short, sharp-faced, agreeable chap, then about 22. He introduced himself to me on the boat and I was surprised to find that Panamerica Steel was sending us both to the same job.
Richards was from some not very good state university engineering school. Being the same age myself, and just out of technical college I saw at once that his knowledge of engineering was rather poor. I couldn't imagine how he had managed to get this job.
Richards was naturally likable, and I liked him a lot. The firm had a contract for the construction of a private railroad. For Richards and me it was mostly an easy job of inspections and routine paper work. At least it was easy for me. It was harder for Richards, because he didn't appear to have mastered the use of a slide rule. When he asked me to check his figures I found his calculations awful. "Boy," I was at last obliged to say, "you are undoubtedly the silliest white man in this province. Look, stupid, didn't you ever take arithmetic? How much are seven times thirteen?" "Work that out," Richards said, "and let me have a report tomorrow."
So when I had time I checked his figures for him, and the inspector only caught him in a bad mistake about twice. In January several directors of the United Sugar Company came down to us on business, but mostly pleasure; a good excuse to get south on a vacation. Richards and I were to accompany them around the place. One of the directors, Mr Prosset was asking a number of questions. I knew the job well enough to answer every sensible question — the sort of question that a trained engineer would be likely to ask. As it was Mr Prosset was not an engineer and some of his questions put me at a loss. For the third time I was obliged to say, "I'm afraid I don't know, sir. We haven't any calculations on that." When suddenly Richards spoke up.
"I think, about nine million cubic feet, sir", he said. "I just happened to be working this out last night. Just for my own interest".
"Oh," said Mr Prosset, turning in his seat and giving him a sharp look. "That's very interesting, Mr — er — Richards, isn't it? Well, now, maybe you could tell me about —"
Richards could. Richards knew everything. All the way up Mr Prosset fired questions at him and he fired answers right back. When we reached the head of the rail, a motor was waiting for Mr Prosset. He nodded absent-mindedly, shook hands with Richards. "Very interesting, indeed,"— he said. "Good-bye, Mr Richards and thank you."
"Not at all, sir," Richards said. "Glad if I could be of service to you."
As soon as the car moved off, I exploded. "A little honest bluff doesn't hurt; but some of your figures...!
"I like to please," said Richards grinning. "If a man like Prosset wants to know something, who am I to hold out on him?"
"What's he going to think when he looks up the figures or asks somebody who does know?"
"Listen, my son," said Richards kindly. "He wasn't asking for any information he was going to use. He doesn't want to know these figures. He won't remember them. I don't even remember them myself. What he is going to remember is you and me. Yes, believe me, he is going to remember that Panamerica Steel has a bright young man named Richards who could tell him everything he wanted —just the sort of chap he can use; not like that other fellow who took no interest in his work, couldn't answer the simplest question and who is going to be doing small-time contracting all his life."
It is true. I am still working for the company, still doing a little work for the construction line. And Richards? I happened to read in a newspaper a few weeks ago that Richards had been made vice-president and director of Panamerica Steel when the Prosset Group bought the old firm.

1. Mr Prosset was not going to use their figures
2. Mr Prosset was going to use some information
3. Mr Prosset was going to remember only a bright young man and his name

GREAT DATING IDEAS
Let's say you have found a person you would really like to go out with, and you are ready to ask that person out on a date. You will immediately have the question, 'What are we going to do on our date?' This question can be particularly tough on the first date because you are trying to make a good first impression and you may or may not know what your partner likes to do. On later dates things tend to get easier. But there are few things more uncomfortable than the conversation that goes like this:
He: 'Would you like to go out this weekend?' She: I would love to!'
He: 'What would you like to do?'
She: 'I don't know, what would you like to do?'
He: 'I don't know...'
To avoid this little scene, it is helpful to have something in mind when you call! Here're some ideas.
A movie
Inviting someone to a movie is definitely safe. One good way to make it a little interesting is to let your date choose the film, or put a bunch of movie names in a hat and pick one at random when you get together. Once the movie starts, you won't have to say anything. That can be a real relief if you find you are both shy.
A cafe
It's another classic. But you'll have to think of something to talk about for an hour or two. Sometimes that can be hard, especially on the first date. Besides, it can be a little expensive if you aren't careful — so plan ahead.
A museum
Most cities and towns have museums: art museums, history museums, nature museums, etc. If you and your partner like this sort of thing, a museum can be a great place to go on a date.
The Zoo
If your city has a zoo, it can be a fun place to go.
A botanical garden
If you like flowers and trees, a botanical garden can be a great place to visit, especially in the spring.
Hiking
Throw some drinks or a lunch in a backpack and have fun.
Bike riding
Find a bike path in your area and go for a ride.
Roller skating
Go rent a pair of roller skates together and spend the day at it. If you have never roller bladed before, make sure the first date includes taking a class so you can learn how to stop!
