It is the study of speech sounds, in general.
It is the study of production, transmission and, reception of speech sounds
Branches of Phonetics
Articulatory Phonetics
It is the study of sounds which deals with its articulation or production.
It is also known as Physiological Phonetics because most of its terminology have been taken from anatomy and physiology.
The speech organs viz. lungs, vocal cords, the teeth, and tongue, have primary biological functions and secondary speech functions
In articulatory phonetics, speech sounds are classified
Distinction between voiced and voiceless sounds
Distinction between nasal and oral sounds
Distinction between aspirated and un-aspirated sounds
Distinction between vowels and consonants
Acoustic Phonetics
It is the study of transmission or physical properties of speech sounds.
It is vital to have the knowledge of electronics, physics, and mathematics.
It provides clear and authentic investigation of speech which sometimes supports analysis in other branches of phonetics.
