Musquodoboit Man Lost His Life in the Boston & Maine Railway Wreck
CONCORD, N.H., Spetember 16. - Among the killed in the Boston and Maine wreck from Sherbrooke, near Canaan, early yesterday morning, by which 25 passengers of the Quebec express lost their lives and nearly 30 were injured was H.D. STEVENS, of Musquodoboit. The investigation by the officials occupied the entire time of the heads of the system to-day. General Superintendent GELEE and Assistant General Superintendent G.H. FOLGER, of Boston, with William E. RAY, superintendent of the Concord division, examined the records in the train despatcher's office here, and also made a careful investigation at Canaan and other stations along the line of the Concord division, in an effort to determine just who was responsible for the blunder by which the two trains were brought together. The proceedings of the examination were secret, but it is known that J.A. BROWLEY, the train despatcher in this city, and Operator GREELEY, the man who received the order from the train despatcher at the station in Canaan, were particula rly questioned. After the examination of these men at the office of Division Superintendent RAY, the railway officials, accompanied by operator GREELEY, left for the scene of the accident in a special train.
The Evening Mail, Thursday, 19 September 1907, p. 7, col. 6:
The remains of Herbert Donald STEVENS, who was killed in the Quebec express train wreck arrived last night and were taken in charge by Funeral Director SNOW, who forwarded them to Musquodoboit for internment. The deceased who was in the thirty-third year of his age, was a blacksmith by trade, and when the accident occurred he was on his way to visit a sister, who he had not seen in years.
