Notice of Race - 2004 Cottonwood Regatta

Wayfarer National Championships & Vanguard 15 Atlantic Coast Championships

April 24-25, 2004 – Catawba Yacht Club, Charlotte, NC





  • Entries Wayfarers, Vanguard 15s, Lightnings




  • Entry Fee Early Entry $70 ($65 for US Sailing Members)

Late Entry (After April 15, 2004) $80 ($75 for US Sailing Members)

Box Lunch $6 per person – per day

Extra meal tickets $12 ($3 for Children under 10)

Entry includes Saturday night dinner ticket, and regatta registration

  • Awards 1st through 5th in the wayfarer class, 1st through 3rd in the Lightning and V15 class




  • Eligibility Each participant must be properly registered and a paid member of the class that they are participating in (if applicable)




  • Directions The Catawba Yacht Club is located on Lake Wylie southwest of Charlotte, NC. 

From southeast of Charlotte (towards Columbia, SC) take I-77and turn west at the Hwy 160 (Ft. Mill) exit.  Continue west on 160 through the intersection with Gold Hill Road (Tega Cay).  Turn Left on Zoar Rd (Evans Tire Store). Turn left on Youngblood. When Youngblood forks, bear left (West) and continue to the club. The club is behind a chain link fence at the end of Youngblood Road West road.


From south of Charlotte (towards Atlanta/Greenville) take I-85 north, exit south onto Hwy 161 (Kings Mtn exit - NOT THE KINGS MTN MILITARY PARK EXIT).  Travel about 8 miles south on Hwy 161.  Turn left onto Hwy 55 (McGills General Store).   Follow Hwy 55 through Clover and out the other side.  Turn left on Hwy 557 at the AMOCO station.  If you pass Clover HS, you went too far.  Hwy 557 goes about 8 more miles and turns into Hwy 49.  Hwy 49 crosses Lake Wylie.  Watch for Youngblood Rd.  It is about 1 mile after the bridge.  Turn right on Youngblood.  When Youngblood forks, bear left (West) to the club. 
If you are an interstate groupie and are coming north on I-85, you can skip the Hwy 161 exit and stay on I-85 all the way to I-77. Go south on I-77 and take the Gold Hill Road exit. Go right on Hwy 161 Turn Left on Zoar Rd (Evans Tire Store). Turn left on Youngblood. When Youngblood forks, bear left (West) and continue to the club. The club is behind a chain link fence at the end of Youngblood Road West road. If you get lost, call Bill Wiggins at 803-979-1703 or Ron Wright at 803-834-7758


  • Camping/Hotels Camping is available on the grounds of CYC. Please find a CYC Member to see your options.

Hotels are also in abundance.  The closest location to us is at Carowinds Blvd.  There are several motels located there.  There is a Holiday Inn Express (704-537-6611), Comfort Inn (704-339-0574), and a Motel 6 (704-545-0306).  These hotels are less than fifteen minutes from our club.  Their rates vary from $55.00 (Motel 6) to 100.00 a night.

Release of Liability

In consideration of your accepting my application to participate in the 2004 Cottonwood Regatta, I hereby waive, release and discharge any and all claims for death, personal injury or property damage which I may have, or which may subsequently accrue to me or my crew, as a result of my participation in yacht racing. This release is intended to release the promoters, sponsors, the Catawba Yacht Club, the officials, any involved municipalities and other public entities, and the United States Sailing Association from and against any and all liability arising out of or connected in any way with my participation in yacht racing, even though that liability may arise out of negligence or carelessness on the part of the persons or entities mentioned above.

I further understand that serious accidents occasionally occur during yacht racing and that participants in yacht racing occasionally sustain mortal or serious personal injuries, and/or property damage, as a consequence thereof. I knowingly assume the risks of yacht racing and release and hold harmless all of the persons or entities mentioned above who might otherwise be liable to me or to my heirs or assigns for damages.

I agree to abide by the rules, regulations, and sailing instructions of the 2004 Cottonwood Regatta and the United States Sailing Association.

I hereby certify that I am the parent of legal guardian of the applicant and give my permission for the applicant, a minor under the age of 18 years, to participate in the 2004 Cottonwood Regatta. I also agree to release and forever discharge the Catawba Yacht Club and all sponsors, producers, their agents, representatives, successors and assigns of all liabilities, claims, actions, damages costs or expenses which I may have against them arising out of or in any way connected with the applicant’s participation in yacht racing, including travel to or from the race location, and including injuries which may be suffered by the applicant before, during or after the races. I understand that this waiver includes any claims based on negligence, action or inaction of any of the above parties.
