As a result, the details necessary for me to subscribe were there:

subscribed by completing the two lines required on my e-mail screen and sending the message. I turned off most automatic options such as signature but left on “copy to self”.
When I was away for a week, I unsubscribed otherwise there would be too much e-mail. Again I only needed to complete two lines. I turned off all the automatic options such as signature. “Copy to self” was left on.
The message was altered to: unsubscribe theshipslist-l-request@rootsweb.com
