K. ADDITIONAL COMMENTS AND INFORMATION ON YOUR SCIENTIFIC ACTIVITY AND RESEARCH PLANS

My research interests lie in the fields of Aesthetics and Education, a combination which provides unique and innovative insight into issues of Curriculum, Teacher Training, and Art Education. Within these fields, I have conducted extensive research, developing a profound body of knowledge on Theatre Drama Education.

In my research activities and work as Head of the Laboratory for Research in Drama/Theatre Education since 1993, I have engaged in the construction of knowledge in Theatre Education and no less important, the construction of knowledge in the fields of Curriculum and Teacher Training, drawing on theatrical concepts and ideas. Over the last three years, I have been developing research into the field of Children and Youth Theatre, drawing the attention of the international academic community to this hitherto neglected field, highlighting its importance in Education. To this end, I have been involved in developing research projects, participating in international conferences, and the publishing of academic works.

My present research activity develops in two main directions - Youth & Children's Theatre, and Drama and Theatre in Education:

Youth & Children's theatre research

  1. Finalizing book manuscript: Images and Arguments in Theatre for Young People.

See section B - Authored Books, submitted in March 2005.

  1. Detailed proposal (in process) for an Arab and Jewish Youth & Children's Theatre Research - to be submitted to the Israel Science Foundation (ISF).

Drama and Theatre in Education

Four on-going projects headed by me are being conducted in the context of the Laboratory for Research in Drama-Theatre Education.

Each project is administered both at a practical level of community service and at a research level of inquiry into the processes and outcomes of the project dissemination. The results will be reported as research publications, reports, reference books and textbooks.

Project One: The Boundaries of Theatre in Education

Examination of the boundaries of theatre and education in the context of school curricula: chances against risks. Finding innovative ways of implementing dramatic activity. The project, conducted at Reali High School, Haifa, is coordinated by a graduate drama student who holds a teaching certificate in drama. The weekly three-hour meetings with pupils are conducted at school throughout the present school year. The meetings are recorded and transcribed and will be analyzed and interpreted for publication as research study.

Project Two: All the World is a Stage

The project focuses on developing theatrical awareness and motivation in developmentally impaired young people. The project is held in conjunction with the center for special education headed by Prof. Shunit Reiter. The project aims at exposing this population to theatre and cultural events by developing their ability to enjoy theatre. Motoric and communicative skills are envisioned to contribute to their self-esteem and self-image. 15 developmentally impaired young people selected from different institutions take part in weekly meetings at the university laboratory. The meetings are coordinated by a postgraduate student of bibliotherapy who specializes in theatre education and is writing her thesis under my supervision. Prof. Shunit Reiter and myself work in conjunction on two complementary agendas: developing a model for working with developmentally impaired young people through theatre and evaluating its effect in a research study.

Project Three: Indicators of Success for Evaluating Quality Theatre Performances

The project aims at establishing standards and developing models for the evaluation of theatre performances.

The project, now in its second year, has already developed various tools which are currently being used by the Ministry of Education and Culture within the framework of national support for cultural events. In the context of the project, the laboratory in collaboration with the department of theatre organized a theatre gathering where the play 'Packing Suitcases' by Hanoch Levin was performed which was attended by teachers, and theatre students. A discussion with the production team was held prior to the performance, and following it the indicators for success were distributed to the audience and open to discussion.

Project Four: Design of Textbooks for Learning Drama

This project has been running for five consecutive years. Until now, internal productions for three books have been completed. The project aims at publishing these books in collaboration within the Ministry of Education and Culture. It should be noted that since there are no existing textbooks in drama education in Hebrew, the project constitutes a breakthrough in drama education in Israel.

Additional plans

  1. Schonmann, S. (completed paper, to be submitted). On the Edge of Chaos: Theatrical Modes of Knowing in Curriculum Planning.

  2. Schonmann S. (in process). When Ethics do not Meet Aesthetics in Theatre Teachers' Training.

  3. Schonmann, S. (in process). The Language of Theatre in Educational Context.

It should be stressed that this is a pioneering theoretical work that attempts to bridge between drama and education from the perspective of concepts and ideas of drama that can enrich understanding of educational thought and practice.

  1. Schonmann, S. & Hardoff, D. (in process). Theatrical Modes of Working with Health Professionals.

The interest that the articles written with D. Hardoof (M.D) raised amongst colleagues in the field of educational drama and medical education brought us to collaborate on publication of an edited book on the topic.
