Dennis Carroll - MCX Armorers course

This is a hands-on program that teaches and guides each participant through all armorer operations, step by step with the instructor. Active participation in disassembly and assembly procedures coupled with question and answer periods provide the type of learning environment favorable for the retention of the material. Written and practical exams are administered to test the working knowledge of each participant. The curriculum enables armorers to develop a maintenance program on the inspection and servicing of the SIG SAUER MCX platform for their agency. Following successful program completion, certification/re-certification to perform these procedures is valid for a period of three (3) years.

Dennis is a retired Lieutenant of Police after 30 years of service. He is a certified Master Firearms Instructor in revolver, pistol, shotgun, SMG, less than lethal and patrol/urban rifle. Also tactics instructor in ballistic shield, rapid deployment / active shooter.

Dennis Carroll - P320 Armorers Class

This is a hands-on program that teaches and guides each participant through all armorer operations step by step with the instructor. Active participation coupled with question and answer periods provide a supportive learning environment for maximum retention of the material. The course is also well suited for law enforcement armorers to design their agency's own maintenance and inspection program. Maintaining current practices and procedures for factory authorized service is essential for all pistols. A three (3) year factory certification is issued upon successful course completion.

Andy Casavant - Tactical Operations: Defined by Sun Tzu's "Art of War"

There is much to learn from the writings of Sun Tzu related to conflict management. As peace officers we too manage conflict so the application of his principles can be utilized to ensure our winning and safety. His principles allow flexibility for response in both thought and action. Thinking tactically is far more important than the tactics themselves. Captain Casavant is the SWAT Chief and Bureau Chief for Operations Review for the Walton County Sheriff's Office. He served in IRAQ with the DOJ ICITAP program. He is a former Chairman of the Board for ASLET and was a Board member for IALEFI. He has a Masters Degree in Technology Training & Development for Easter Illinois University. He is a writer for POLICE ONE .Com and speaks extensively on leadership, training and related topics. Awarded the Silver Star for Bravery Police Hall of Fame.

Traci Ciepiela - Infinite Possibilities for Officers

This Infinite Possibilities Class will introduce participants to how they can tap into the powerful person they are even if they don't feel that way. The program addresses topics such as: beliefs, emotions, instincts, suicide, depression, faith, sleep, meditation, and the meaning of life. Let's address the issue of depression and suicide in our "First Responders" before they reach the crisis stage. This program will teach you all the things that we do to ourselves that actually prevent us from living the best life we can.

After retiring from full time Law Enforcement, Traci moved into education. Also embarking on research and practice of tools and methods to help officers cope with the same stress and depression she experienced while working. She introduced Tactical Yoga and now will introduce Infinite Possibilities. A program she found to help live a happier stress free life.

Beau Cisco - Body Language and Deception in High Risk Environments

The course includes lecture and practical exercises in general body language, anticipating violent encounters and deception detection.

Beau Cisco is the founder and lead instructor of CSS. he has been active in Law Enforcement since 1999 and has a Master of Science in Forensic Psychology. Beau has worked primarily in the South Florida area and has been involved in Narcotics Investigations, DEA Federal Task Force, Undercover Operations, and is currently a patrol supervisor. He is heavily involved with training at his own agency and consults at a number of others.

Stephen Cliffe - Contextual Cueing and Pre-Assault Indicator Recognition

Participants will examine and identify enhanced pattern recognition of physical asocial indicators to enhance objective decision making in anti-social/asocial high-stress settings. Metrics of movement, physical and behavioral indicators of asocial violence and objective measure of totality of circumstance to facilitate enhanced OODA functionality are all identified, demonstrated and discussed. Objective descriptors for post-event reporting and how the adoption of objective predictors make for better high-stress decision making.

Mr. Cliffe P.P.S., M.Sc.Ed., has extensive experience street violence in security provision & practical knowledge of best practices in educational systems design. He blends a Masters of Science in Education with his 30+ years of experience in street and EP work related violence and an extensive knowledge base of pre-assault indicators. He is a specialist and SME in controlled stress training curriculum development for deadly force encounters and asocial violence training.

Thomas Cline - Policing the Mentally Ill

This class introduces and reinforces concepts trainers can use to persuade their agency's personnel to develop the skill-set to safely respond to calls involving the mentally ill.

Thomas Cline with 49 years in L.E. is a trainer for the Chicago Police Department. He has a MBA from SXU and a MAP from Adler School. Past president of the International Association of Ethics Trainers, he and his wife have 7 children. He's authored Cop Tales! John Combs - Developing Valid and Defensible Physical Fitness Standards

To present to law enforcement and other criminal justice personnel, methods for developing legally defensible mandatory physical fitness standards for both applicants and incumbent employees. This course will cover the Uniform Guidelines for Employee Selection Tests, recommended standards, case law guidelines, and the phases of the fitness validation process using data and testing results from the legally defensible NC Police Officer Physical Abilities Test. Validity and reliability testing results and recommended standards will be shown and discussed.

John Combs is a retired Physical Fitness Program Director from the NC Justice Academy, and is currently a sworn reserve officer, consultant, and law enforcement trainer. He has over 30 years of law enforcement experience, and a Master of Arts in Health Education & Promotion from East Carolina University. He is a Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist (NSCA) and a Certified Exercise Physiologist (ACSM).

Chuck Cornelius - Enhancing Eyewitness Evidence

Implementation of recommended protocols, or Best Practices to improve the accuracy and reliability of eyewitness evidence. The class will assist in improving the police function in the identification process, including field identification procedures, properly instructing the witness prior to identification of suspects; use of sequential lineups for presentations, the use of blind procedures for presenting photo or live lineups; use of composite drawings or computer images and recording and preserving identification results while reducing the likelihood of incorrectly identifying the innocent.

Chuck Cornelius began working with the Harris County District Attorney's as an Investigator in 2011. Mr. Cornelius has worked in the Misdemeanor & Felony Courts, Public Integrity Division and now Vehicular Crimes Division while also the TCOLE Training Coordinator for the agency. Mr. Cornelius has more than 25 years’ experience in the law enforcement field and holds a Master Peace Officer Certificate form TCOLE, a POST Certificate in California and is a certified instructor with the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement.

Bobby Cummings - Indoor versus Outdoor Ranges. What can my agency afford?

Modern firearms training facilities must be able to integrate the skills used on a daily basis by law enforcement officers that include weapons manipulation and the ability to de-escalate, or escalate if necessary, the encounter. This course will explore the different types of indoor and outdoor firearms training venues, their feasibility in specific areas and their affordability. All agencies must provide appropriate training to their officers to meet today’s threats. Many agencies see ranges as out of reach but actually can be very feasible and affordable to any size agency.

Bobby Cummings has more than 29 years of experience in the design and construction of training facilities for military and law enforcement agencies. His projects have included firing ranges, driver training ranges, gymnasiums, classroom buildings, and dormitories throughout the United States and overseas. In addition to his duties as a designer, he is a Reserve Deputy Sheriff and firearms instructor in Bedford County, VA.

James Daniels - Unmanned Aircraft Systems(UAS)/Drones As A Training Tool For Instructors

This course will give instructors a new prospective of training using an Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS). Attendees will receive current information on Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Regulations for using a UAS and requirements of the Remote Pilot. Attendees will view how a UAS will benefit their training and analysis/evaluation of students. Attendees will see various types of training that has been documented using a UAS.

Joined the Ohio Peace Officer Training Academy in 2000. Served with Greenfield Police Department, rank of sergeant. Member of IALEFI, ILEETA, NLEFIA, Airborne Law Enforcement Association (ALEA), Association for Unmanned Vehicle Systems International (AUVSI), and the Aircraft Owners/Pilots Association (AOPA). Jason Der - Learn to Fail or Fail to Learn

While failure can the best teacher it doesn't happen by accident. In this course participants will learn how to redefine failure as a powerful tool for learning rather than the traditional view of failure as the opposite of success. You will discuss case studies of failures that led to success and then be able to integrate those lessons into your own teachings. Most importantly participants will be able to create positive feedback loops of their own that can be used in any training environment to achieve positive learning outcomes.

Jason Der is in his tenth year of service as a Senior Deputy Sheriff with Sheriff Services in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan (Canada). In addition to his front line duties Jason is a field trainer, arrest and control tactics instructor, and provides both academy and in-service training for his agency across the province. Jason also a member of his department's provincial Training Advisory Group and has previously served on the provincial Equipment Advisory Group.

Michele Devlin - Cultural Asset Teams: A Tactical Anthropology Training Approach

This course provides an overview of rapidly diversifying communities in the United States, and provides a tactical anthropology approach to developing and training "cultural asset teams" in public safety organizations to assist during emergencies, disasters, search operations, and other crisis situations.

Drs. Michele Devlin and Mark Grey are professors at the University of Northern Iowa and serve as a cultural asset team with the Iowa Department of Public Safety. They are leading specialists in Tactical Anthropology, and work extensively with law enforcement, the military, fire, EMS, and other first responder service organizations that serve cross-culturally in large scale emergencies.

James Dexter - MRDS (Red Dot Sights) for Patrol Officers

This course will allow officers to understand the benefits of red dot sights on patrol pistols and be able to identify considerations in selection, mounting and training officers on red dot pistol sights.

Jim Dexter is a 10 year law enforcement officer having served for the Madison, WI Police Department, the Federal Air Marshal Service, and currently the Lisle, IL Police Department. Officer Dexter is currently assigned to Patrol and is a member of FIAT SWAT. Officer Dexter is a graduate of the FBI Firearms Instructor school having taken Top Shot with a red dot equipped pistol and has advanced training in red dot specific pistols.

Eric Dickinson - Adapting Below 100 For LE Families

Below 100 is an effort to instill a culture of safety and eliminate preventable line-of-duty-deaths (LODD). “Below 100 for Law Enforcement Families” shows how the lifesaving lessons of Below 100 can be easily adapted to specialty areas. Officers and family members are encouraged to attend together to learn ways to apply the tenets of Below 100 and positively affect their relationships; mental, physical, financial, and spiritual health; safety on and off duty; and preparations for line of duty death.

Eric is the Vice-Chair of the Below 100 Board of Directors and a nationwide B100 Core-Trainer. He is a 22 year law enforcement veteran and author of the book “The Street Officer’s Guide to Emergency Medical Tactics” and numerous professional articles. He has trained law enforcement and EMS personnel across the United States in various topics related to officer survival, use of force, and emergency medicine and he was the 2014 recipient of the ILEETA Trainer of the Year award.

Scott Donaldson - Law Enforcement Leadership Development

Leadership Development is an introduction to the most crucial leadership pillars needed for current and future leaders. Participants will explore the components of Managing vs. Leading, Leadership Styles including Servant Leadership, Mentoring, Reverse Mentoring & Coaching, and Conflict Resolution. Each topic presents the traditional aspect of each section combined with current events / best practices, and is supported with small group assignments and discussion.

Scott Donaldson has 15 years of law enforcement experience & training and currently serves as a Coordinator for the Criminal Justice Training Center located at Tarrant County College in Fort Worth, TX. Scott has presented at numerous training centers and police agencies across the country as well as state and national conferences. Scott is the current Chair of the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Curriculum Committee and serves on several community committees and boards.

Bert DuVernay - A Nearly Fatal Range Shooting: Lessons Learned

This session is to present lessons learned during an incident in which an instructor was shot on the range. In April 2016, a Massachusetts Municipal Police Training Committee firearms instructor received a nearly fatal gunshot wound during a recruit class. He received immediate life saving treatment on scene by fellow instructors that are graduates of Massachusetts’ new Law Enforcement Advance Casualty Care course and was transported by helicopter to a trauma center. Presented will be lessons learned concerning range safety, gunshot wound treatment, and emergency procedures.

Bert DuVernay is the retired Chief of Police for New Braintree, Massachusetts and the current President of the Massachusetts Law Enforcement Firearms Instructors' and Armorers' Association. His background includes 43 years of police service, both fulltime and part time, as well as 6 years of college teaching and security consultation. He is the past Director of Smith & Wesson Academy, where he was a staff member from 1990 to 2001.

Thomas Dworak - Adaptive Decision-Making for the FTO

This research-based course teaches FTO’s (and through FTO’s efforts, the trainee) how to become adaptive, agile decisions makers. Attendees will work with a decision-making model that is flexible, universal and legally sound. Attendees will be introduced to a feedback method that is millennial proof and nurtures the probationary officers critical thinking skills. While aimed at the FTO, any trainer would benefit from the topics presented in this program.

A retired Sgt. from a northern Illinois police department, Thom is now an instructor/content provider for The Virtus Group (Inc). Thom was the Field Training and Evaluation Program Coordinator and Lead Defensive Tactics /Use of Force Instructor at his former Agency. Thom developed and facilitates The Adaptive FTO a training program bringing EQ, decision making and critical thinking together to train your agencies most valuable resource, the probationary police officer.

Mordecai Dzikansky - The Phenomenon of Suicide Bombings; Policing in an Era of Terrorism

During the second Intifada, urban terrorism by means of suicide bombings was the preferred method of attack by terror groups in Israel. We are now seeing the resurgence of this method of attack by ISIS and other radical groups in Europe and Africa. Israel’s reaction to suicide bombings, the resilience of its citizens and the country’s ensuing security developments show the phenomenal capability of an urban environment succeeding against this type of terror. Israel's pro-active approach to combating suicide bombings and Best Practices will be conveyed in this course and be made relevant and operational for the USA environment.

Mordecai Dzikansky, NYPD 1st Grade Detective (Ret.) served 25 years with the NYPD. As their 1st Intelligence Liaison to the Israel National Police, he became their go to terror expert, responding in person to 30 bombing scenes in Israel and globally. His memoir Terrorist Cop (Barricade Books) & textbook Terrorist Suicide Bombings (CRC Press) were published in 2011 & 2012, respectively. Heather Eckert - Closing the Reactionary Gap

When encountering a threat, the human body’s natural response will result in an automated response of neurology and physiology. Although your naturally occurring automated response (NOAR) cannot be trained away, it can be controlled and converted through training using natural occurring intuitive skills. Closing the Reactionary Gap is a fast paced the depth course examining what the reactionary gap is, how our body responds to a threat, situational awareness, reading body language, recognizing pre-attack indicators and implementation of NOAR training into everyday patrol and training sessions.

Heather is the owner and Lead Instructor at E4Defense, LLC. She was a CJ Major and has been involved in Law Enforcement since 2010. She is a PSB Level III Firearms Instructor, holds multiple Firearm, FOF and Specialty Training Certifications including IALEFI Master Instructor, and an active member of ILEETA, IALEFI® and IAWP. While working with Departments across the country she recognized a dire need for advanced firearms, DT and mental preparedness training and formed E4Defense, LLC.

Eric Ellis - Instructor Development for Active Shooter Training

This Instructor Development Course will review current trends in Active Shooter incidents nationwide and discussed the lessons learned from these and how they should shape our training moving forward. A review of Active Shooter Protocol will be conducted and adjustments for these policies discussed based on the trends. This includes TCCC and its integration into training along with the Rescue Task Force model. Scenario development will be discussed in detail to allow instructors to better teach and challenge their officers.

Eric Ellis is 19 year veteran of the McHenry County Sheriff’s office and has served on the departments SWAT team for over 17 years. During that time he has been assigned to the sniper unit as well as the entry team. Eric is currently assigned as Team Leader for the department’s multi-jurisdictional team, and is also in charge of the teams Explosive breaching unit. Eric is also assigned to the patrol division as an afternoon shift sergeant. He holds instructor certifications in Rapid Deployment, MACTAC, Rescue Task Force, and Emergency Vehicle Operations (EVOC).

Eric Ellis - Ballistic Shield Operations for Patrol

This course is designed to give firearms and tactical instructors insight into the application of ballistic shield operations in the patrol environment. Geared to solo and two officer response to critical incidents, this course will offer a fundamental progression of live fire drills applicable to patrol officers. Included will be route finding and weapon manipulation as well as two man supported coverage. Attendees will come away with an understanding of the advantages and limitations of shield use and how they can be applied to successfully resolve high risk incidents.

Sgt. Eric Ellis is 18 year veteran of the McHenry County Sheriff’s office and has served on the department’s multi-jurisdictional team SWAT team for 17 years. He has been assigned to the sniper unit as well as the entry team. Eric is currently assigned as Team Leader and is in charge of the explosive breaching unit. Alex Embry - Tactical Live Fire Skill Builder

This instructor level course will help trainers structure live fire drills that will hone shooting skills designed to increase officer’s capabilities in regard to tactical situations such as counter-ambush, building clearing, and two officer response to critical incidents. These drills will make it possible to coach shooters to a higher, more dynamic level of performance in these situations. Participants will then look at applying those skills in live fire simulations that can be conducted with minimal equipment and outlay of funds.

Sergeant Alex Embry has served at the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office for 13 years and is currently assigned to the Training Division. He is the Range Master for the Firearms Training Unit as well as the lead instructor of the Control Tactics Cadre. He is assigned as the Team Commander of the Sheriff’s Office multi-jurisdictional SWAT Team and has deployed previously as an entry team member, sniper/observer, ATL and Team Leader.
