Port of Morehead City customers, Cogent Fibre and Industrial Marine Services, hosted an exhibit of woodchips that are chipped and exported from the port. Robert Mantrop, Cogent Fibre Principle and Frank Peeples, Owner of Industrial Marine Services, both partners in the wood chip business at Morehead City, were on hand all day explaining the woodchips operation to enthusiastic listeners. Kids were able to dig in an enormous pile of woodchips to uncover special prizes.
The open house served to remind visitors of the value of the maritime industry to Morehead City, the surrounding region and the entire state. It provided a firsthand look at the docks, warehouses, cranes and cargo that link North Carolina business, industry and consumers with world markets.
Some of the highlights of events held at the port were the Blessing of the Fleet Ceremony, which is a tribute to the commercial fishing industry, port tours, tours of the US Coast Guard Cutter Beluga, a fossil dig hosted by port customer, PCS Phosphate, and a boat show.
