MESSIANIC PROPHECY (PROPHECY RELATING TO JESUS, THE MESSIAH) Definitions "Eschatology": The doctrine of last things such as the second coming of Christ and the end of the age.“ "Jesus”: from the Greek (and Latin) for the Hebrew “Jeshua” (Joshua, meaning the Lord is salvation “Christ”: from the Greek “Christos” for the Hebrew “Mashiah”, meaning anointed. “Messiah”: from the Greek “Messias” for the Hebrew “Mashiah”, meaning Anointed One. Apart from a possible reference in Daniel 9:25,26, the title 'Messiah' is not used to depict Israel's eschatological king. Instead, the Old Testament refers to the Lord's Anointed One, who in the New Testament is called Messiah or Christ. So Jesus (Savior) Christ (Anointed One) was the Anointed Savior. “Anoint”: In the Old Testament, certain things (i.e. the Tabernacle, and people (i.e. prophets, priests, and kings) were anointed with oil, signifying that they were set apart and empowered fora particular service to God. The oil used in anointing was a type of the Holy Spirit. Jesus was anointed by the Holy Spirit (John 1:32,33; Luke 4:18). “Type or shadow”: A person, thing, or event that symbolizes another person, thing, or event that is to come in the future. “Antitype”: The person, thing, or event represented or foreshadowed by an earlier type. “Symbolism”: Something which represents something else. It is generally not prefigurative. Instead, it represents something which already exists.
