ENTERTAINMENT
RADIO: Radio changed people’s lives by providing cheap entertainment. Farmers and people in small towns did not feel as isolated. Businesses could advertise products. Politicians could speak directly to the public. Radio connected people across the nation very quickly.
MOVIES: The Motion Picture was the most popular form of entertainment. At first there were only silent films, but talking movies (called “talkies”) began in 1927. Movie stars began to capture the public imagination.
SPORTS: Hockey, Football, Baseball were all popular men’s sports. Women started playing sports professionally also and attracted large crowds at baseball and basketball games. Unfortunately the rise of male athletes put an end to the popularity of women’s sports – men were seen as “real athletes”.
DANCE and MUSIC: People went to dance halls as a form of entertainment and socialization. There was live music and the most popular dance was called the “Charleston”. Jazz was becoming very popular too.
