CIS OBSERVERS HAILED PARLIAMENTARY ELECTIONS IN GEORGIATbilisi. 29 March’04, www.civil.ge - Executive Secretary of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) Yuri Yarov, who led the group of observers from the CIS counties, gave a positive assessment to the March 28 parliamentary elections in Georgia. “Although minor violations were observed, still they will not significanlty influence the final results of the elections,” the CIS Executive Secretary said at a news briefing on March 29. Yuri Yarov said final report on the results of the observation would be published some these days. 5. PARTIAL RESULTS OF GEORGIAN PARLIAMENTARY POLL DECLAREDTbilisi. 29 March’04, BBC Monitoring, Source: Imedi TV. - With results in from about 96 per cent of Georgia's polling stations, President Mikheil Saakashvili's National Movement is leading with 66.04 per cent of the vote in the 28 March parliamentary election. Central Electoral Commission Chairman Zurab Chiaberashvili made the announcement at a news conference on 29 March, which was broadcast live by Imedi TV. He said that the Industrialists - New Right bloc was on 7.50 per cent and the Labour Party on 5.43 per cent. Only parties that receive more than 7 per cent of the votes may enter parliament. Ajarian leader Aslan Abashidze's Revival union was currently on 0.63 per cent, however Ajaria's polling stations, where the union enjoys considerable support, have not yet declared, Chiaberashvili said. 6. AT LEAST TWO PARTIES CLEAR GEORGIAN ELECTION THRESHOLD - PARALLEL COUNTTbilisi. 29 March’04, BBC Monitoring, Source: Imedi TV. - A parallel count of votes cast in the 28 March Georgian parliamentary elections, which was conducted by the International Society for Fair Elections and Democracy, has revealed that at least two parties have cleared the 7-per-cent threshold and will enter parliament. At a news briefing on 29 March, broadcast live by Imedi TV, International Society for Fair Elections and Democracy spokeswoman Tamuna Zhvania said that the results of the parallel count were as follows: National Movement - Democrats bloc - 67.78 per cent; Rightist Opposition - Industrialists, New Right bloc - 7.75 per cent; Union for Democratic Revival - 6.60 per cent; Labour Party - 6.14 per cent; Freedom movement - 4.72 per cent; National Democratic Party – Traditionalists bloc - 2.38 per cent; Unity movement - 2.19 per cent. The spokeswoman said that the margin of error was 0.5 per cent, which meant that Ajarian leader Aslan Abashidze's Revival union might also clear the 7-per-cent threshold in the official count. She also said that "far more irregularities" had been recorded on 28 March than in the January presidential election. 7. 13 OPPOSITIONAL MAJORITY DEPUTIES IN PARLIAMENTTbilisi. 29 March’04, Caucasus Press. - There will be only 13 oppositional majority deputies in the parliament of new convocation, though President of Georgia Michael Saakashvili stated not once that most of them were among majority deputies. Nationals and democrats will have 16 majority deputies in the parliament. They will be joined probably by 19 deputies who were nominated as majority deputies from the former governmental bloc 8. "REVIVALS": PARTY WON ELECTIONS IN AJARA THOUGH THREATS OF NOT GETTING TO PARLIAMENT EXISTTbilisi, 29 March ’04, Prime-News. - According to "Democratic Revival Union", the party won elections in Ajara though threats of not getting to parliament exist. As one of the leaders of "Revivals", head of Tbilisi organization Tsotne Bakuria declared, according to preliminary data "DRU" got 64% of votes in Ajara. In addition, as Bakuria noted the governmental party falsified elections throughout the rest part of Georgia. According to 300 protocols of the CEC, "Revivals" got 0.63% of votes. 9. INDUSTRIALISTS - NOVAS SURPASSED 7% THRESHOLDTbilisi. 29 March’04, Caucasus Press. - According to preliminary findings published by the CEC, the rightist opposition bloc Industrialists - New Rights has gained 7.5% of votes. National Movement - Democrats is leading with 76.04%. Labor Party so far has received only 5.43%, Tanadgoma (Unity) - 3.28%, Tavisupleba (Freedom) - 1.66%m, Democratic Revival Union - 0.63%. All other participants have gained less than 1%. CE Chair Zurab Chiaberashvili said these are preliminary findings and the final returns may differ from them, since no data have come from majority of districts yet. He said that 1,473,465 voters out of 2,266,279 registered have participated in the elections. 10. NATIONAL MOVEMENT - DEMOCRATS CEDE VICTORY ONLY IN ASLAN ABASHIDZE'S PATRIMONYTbilisi. 29 March’04, Caucasus Press. - Adjara is the sole region of Georgia, where National Movement - Democrats have lost the elections. Zaza Gorozia, CEC Chair's Representative to Adjara, told CAUCASUS PRESS that by 04:00 am today he had received final returns from four out of six electoral districts of Adjara. The elections in Khulo district of Adjara may be invalidated.
