1.      CEC SPECIAL GROUP LEAVING KHULO REGION


Tbilisi. 14 April ’04, Prime-News. - Special group of Central Election Commission tending to hold repeated parliamentary elections in Khulo region are leaving the place due to possible danger. As prime-News was informed from the head of mentioned special group Giorgi Chakhnashvili, they intend to leave for Poti in nearest hours. According to Chakhnashvili, supporters of Aslan Abashidze are gathering nearby Khulo administrative building and intend to hold protest actions similar to Kobuleti one. Special group of Central Election Commission tending to hold repeated parliamentary elections in Kobuleti on April 18 were forced to leave autonomous republic of Ajara on Wednesday.

2.      RUSTAVI2 REPORT CREW BEATEN UP AT CHOLOQI CHECK-POINT


Tbilisi. 14 April’04, www.rustavi2.com - Situation is eventually becoming tenser in Ajara - inhabitants of the Khulo and Qobuleti regions and the leadership of the autonomy objects the appointment of the repeat elections in these two constituencies and ousts the representatives of the CEC. After Karlo Kvitaishvili was compelled to leave Khulo, Rustavi2 report crew was beaten up and the video camera broken at the Choloqi administrative check-point, the place which even the president was refused to pass a few weeks ago. Activists of the opposition movement "Our Ajara" were also beaten up in Khulo by Abashidze's supporters today, who had arrived from different regions of Ajara to protect their leader. Meanwhile, the official position of the Ajara government becomes known - the interior minister of Georgia Jemal Gogitidze told Kavkass - Press news agency today that the people of Ajara feel insulted with the decision of the CEC and will not admit the conduct of repeat elections there. "Repeat elections will not be held in Ajara" - Gogitidze said and added that the dispute over the disarmament of the population is also doomed to failure as the people of Ajara have these arms to protect their families and to avoid another revolution in the region. The most troubling item of the latest developments is that the national flag of Georgia has been taken down at the Choloki administrative check - point. […].

3.      "OUR AJARA" WILL START PROTEST ACTIONS IN AJARA IF ELECTIONS FAIL TO TAKE PLACE IN KHULO REGION AND KOBULETI


Tbilisi. 14 April ’04, Prime-News. - "United Opposition - Our Ajara" will hold protest actions in Ajara after April 20 if armed formations are not disarmed and repeated parliament-ary elections fail to take place in Khulo region and Kobuleti. As one of the leaders of the mentioned organization Koba Khabazi declared at the press conference, protest action requesting holding of polling will be arranged in Khulo and Kobuleti on Wednesday.[…].

4.      HAMLET CHIPASHVILI: ELECTIONS IN KHULO AND KOBULETI SHOULD NOT BE HELD UNTIL DECISION OF SUPREME COURT

Representatives of Georgian electoral body under siege in Ajaria


Batumi, 13 April’04. Caucasus Press. - Some 10 people, including representatives from the Central Electoral Commission, have been blockaded inside the building of Khulo District administration. The CEC representatives had arrived in Ajaria to hold runoff elections in Kobuleti and Khulo districts. Caucasus Press was told by opposition Our Ajaria movement that the head of the Khulo District administration, Dursun Zoidze, had gathered about 300 people who surrounded the administration building. They did not let the guests from Tbilisi into the building for more than an hour. Now, as the CEC representatives have entered the building, Zoidze's supporters are not letting them out. […]

"OUR AJARA": ELECTIONS IN KHULO MIGHT FAIL


Tbilisi. 13 April ’04, Prime-News. - According to "United Opposition - Our Ajara", repeated April 18 parliamentary elections might fail in Khulo region for "Revivals" are openly calling upon population not to participate in polling. As one of the leaders of the mentioned opposition organization Vakhtang Abuladze told Prime-News, local authorities consider that March 28 elections were fair and holding of repeated polling is not necessary. According to Abuladze, supporters of the opposition are enthusiastic to participating in elections and observers will control the polling process maximally. CEC abolished March 28 polling results of Khulo region for recorded mass violations. Repeated elections will be held in Kobuleti too.

CEC CHAIRMAN WILL DEPART FOR AJARA ON WEDNESDAY


Tbilisi. 13 April ’04, Prime-News. - On Wednesday chairman of Central Election Commission Zurab Chiaberashvili will depart for Ajara to observe pre-election process in Khulo region and Kobuleti. As Prime-News was informed from the CEC, Zurab Chiaberashvili himself will take 70 thousand bulletins. Central Election Commission hopes on normal election process in the mentioned regions. Central Election Commission abolished election results of Khulo region and Kobuleti due to recorded mass violations.

REGISTRATION OF LABOR PARTY APPEAL TO STRASBOURG COURT


Tbilisi. 13 April ’04, Black Sea Press. - The appeal filed by the Labor Party of Georgia to the Strasbourg Court has been registered, the party leader Shalva Natelashvili said at the today's press conference. He said that the laborites had been appealing against illegally calling and holding presidential and parliamentary elections as well as illegal extension of the work of parliament of the 1999 convocation. He believes that after the appeal of the Labor Party has been registered, the Georgia's current government “would have serious problems.”
