1.  Saakashvili: Ruling Party Won Elections in Adjara


Tbilisi, 28 March’04, civil.ge. - President Saakashvili said late on March 28 after the parliamentary elections that his party National Movement-Democrats won elections in Adjarian Autonomy with “significant advantage.”  “According to the preliminary information we secured twice more support in Adjara than the Revival Union [Adjarian leader Aslan Abashidze’ party]. The local authorities lost elections in Adjara for the first time during last ten years,” Mikheil Saakashvili told a news conference. He also warned the Adjarian authorities to disarm local paramilitary forces and obey the central government. “They have two options – to surrender arms, or I will disarm them. The second option will be very painful for them,” he added. “We will not tolerate a feudal regime in Georgian region any more,” he said referring to Adjarian Autonomy.

2.  CATHOLICOS-PATRIARCH OF ALL GEORGIA CALLS FOR HIGH VOTER TURNOUT


Tbilisi, 28 March ’04, Inter-Press. - Catholicos-Patriarch of All Georgia Ilia II on Sunday cast ballot at one of the Tbilisi's polling stations opened for the March 28 parliamentary elections. Head of the Georgian Orthodox Church didn't undergo the voter marking procedure, emphasizing that he is not going to use the so-called 'carousel method'. Ilia II voiced hope that the March 28 parliamentary elections will provide a foundation for country's progress and better future. In an interview with reporters he called on the Georgian people to partake in the elections, noting that each citizen is obliged to express his/her will. 'I hope that everything in the country will be changed for the better and Georgia will achieve peace once and forever,' the Catholicos-Patriarch emphasized.

3.  PRESIDENT HOPES GEORGIA TO HOLD DEMOCRATIC ELECTIONS


Tbilisi, 28 March ’04, Inter-Press. - President of Georgia Mikheil Saakashvili said after casting a vote at one of the polling stations in Tbilisi on Sunday that the March 28 parliamentary elections will be held in accordance with the international democratic principles. […] The President said that he didn't agree with a widely accepted viewpoint that Georgia might have a one-party parliament as a result of the March 28 elections. He noted that opposition parties already have representatives in the parliament as a result of elections held in single-mandate system constituencies last November. Saakashvili said that he is satisfied with the election process, but is not happy that his wife lady Sandra Roelofs cannot cast ballot, since is a citizen of Netherlands.

4.  MARCH 28 POLLS CAN BE CONSIDERED VALID - CEC HEAD


Tbilisi, 28 March ’04, Inter-Press. - The Chairman of the Central Election Commission (CEC) of Georgia Zurab Chiaberashvili told a news conference on Sunday that according to latest reports 1 158 729 voters have cast ballot by 5 pm. Chiaberashvili added that this number is enough to consider the March 28 parliamentary elections valid. The CEC head said that the highest voter turnout was in Zugdidi; then comes the Adjara Autonomous Republic. According to Chiaberashvili, the lowest voter turnout was in the mountainous Kazbegi region of Georgia.

5.  RULING PARTY GAINED 55 % OF VOTE IN TBILISI - EXIT POLLS


Tbilisi, 28 March ’04, Inter-Press. - According to preliminary exit polls conducted in Tbilisi, the National Movement-Democrats election bloc has gained 55% of vote in the March 28 parliamentary elections in Georgia's capital. According to preliminary results of the exit polls, the Rightist Opposition election bloc, which unites Industrialists and New Rights parties gained 10,7% of vote in Tbilisi; the Union of Democratic Revival led by Adjarian leader Aslan Abashidze- 7,1%; the Labor Party - 6,3%; the Freedom party, led by Georgia's first president's son Konstantine Gamsakhurdia - 5,8 %; the Unity Party - 3,1%; NDP-Traditionalists election bloc- 2,5% and Socialists party - 0,4%. 12,1 % of voters refused to partake in the exit polls.

6.  EXIT POLLS PREDICT LANDSLIDE VICTORY OF RULING PARTY


Tbilisi, 28 March ‘04, Inter-Press. - According to preliminary results of the exit polls conducted by Georgian polling firms IPM Group and BCG with the financial support of the Open Society - Georgia Foundation, the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation and the British Council, the National Movement-Democrats election bloc has won a landslide victory in the March 28 parliamentary elections with 78,6% of vote. The exit polls predict that four opposition parties - the Rightists Opposition election bloc, the Labor Party, the Union of Democratic Revival and Freedom still have chances to clear 7% threshold necessary to gain seats in the legislative body. According to preliminary results of the exit polls, the Rightist Opposition election bloc, which unites Industrialists and New Rights parties gained 4,8% of vote; the Labor Party - 4,4%; the Union of Democratic Revival led by Adjarian leader Aslan Abashidze- 3,7%; the Freedom party, led by Georgia's first president's son Konstantine Gamsakhurdia - 3,6%; the Unity Party - 1,6%; NDP-Traditiona-lists election bloc- 1,4% and Socialists party - 0,5%. The voter turnout was 40 % by 5 pm.

7.  NO VIOLATIONS REPORTED WHILE VOTING ABROAD


Tbilisi, 28 March ’04, Inter-Press. - According to the data provided by the Fair Elections non-governmental organization, no violations have been observed at polling stations opened aboard for the March 28 parliamentary elections of Georgia. Representative of the organiza-tions Zaza Daraselia told a news conference at the Election Media Center in Tbilisi on Sunday that by 4 pm over 400 voters cast ballots in Moscow's two polling stations, while around 300 voters cast ballots in Saint-Petersburg, 30 voters - in Paris, and 31 voters - in Rome.
