14.OBSERVERS SUFFER PRESSURE IN ADJARA


Tbilisi, 28 March ’04, Inter-Press. - Domestic and international election observation faces pressure in the Adjara Autonomous Republic. Reportedly, Ramaz Mikeladze, an observer of the International Society for Fair Elections and Democracy, which is Georgia's domestic election watchdog, was physically and morally assaulted during performing his duties at one of the precincts in Adjara on March 28. Representative of the organization Tamar Zhvania said at a news conference at the Election Media Center in Tbilisi on Sunday that Mikeladze was assaulted because of the fact that his data about voter turnout failed to comply with an official one.

15. ADDITIONAL BALLOT PAPERS SENT TO ADJARA ON COE'S RECOMMENDATION


Tbilisi, 28 March ‘04, Caucasus Press. - The CEC has followed the Council of Europe's recommendation and sent additional 50000 ballot papers to Adjara to avoid complications. The recommendation followed Adjarian leadership's protest against the delivery of only 230000 ballots instead of the requested 290000.

16. PRIME MINISTER OF GEORGIA CONTROLS THE VOTE PROCESS IN ACHARA


Tbilisi, 28 March ‘04, Black Sea Press. - Zurab Zhvania, Prime Minister of Georgia, arrived in Achara for observation of the vote process at Parliamentary elections of March 28. Zurab Zhvania voted in the morning at polling station No. 28 in Tbilisi Saburtalo district. He left for Poti after he voted. Some Ministers and MPs accompany him in the trip. Vakhtang Abashidze, chairman of Ministers Council of Achara Autonomous Republic, met the Prime Minister at the administrative border of Achara, in order to accompany him in the trip to the autonomy. Zurab Zhvania met with representatives of some local oppositional Parties in Kobuleti. He also met with OSCE observers, monitors at the elections. “Holding of the elections in the normal and calm environment is the task. I shall do my best for avoidance of any tenseness”, - Zurab Zhvania declared to journalists and noted that leadership of Achara was to prevent from reasons of any incidents. Zurab Zhvania reported that he planned to meet with Aslan Abashidze, Head of Achara, as well as to visit some villages and polling stations.

17. OUR ADJARA WARNS OVER POSSIBLE ARMED CONFRONTATION


Batumi, 28 March ’04, Inter-Press. - Representative of the Our Adjara united opposition movement Merab Kidzinidze said that certain armed formations in the Khulo region plan to enter Batumi, supposedly aiming at provoking an armed confrontation and destabilizing the situation in the region. Merab Kindzinidze made this statement after meeting with Prime Minister Zurab Zhvania on Sunday. Though the Prime Minister while commenting on the statement noted that he doesn't have information about existence of the armed formations in the Khulo region.

18. ABASHIDZE DISSATISFIED WITH ELECTIONS


Batumi, 28 March ’04, Inter-Press. - Head of the Adjara Autonomous Republic Aslan Abashidze after casting a vote in Batumi said on Sunday that 'he is in good spirits', however noted that the March 28 parliamentary elections face violations throughout Georgia, including Adjara. Abashidze said that people aren't allowed to freely express their will. The Adjarian leader pointed out that his sun, the Batumi City Mayor Giorgi Abashidze, has met some problems while voting at a polling station in Batumi. 'He was delayed at the polling station since the voter's address wasn't indicated in the voter registration card. While Nino Burjanadze cast ballot with her driving license,' Aslan Abashidze said. The head of the Adjara Autonomous Republic said that he voted for the democracy and stabilization. […].

19. ELECTION WATCHDOG CONCERNED OVER INCREASING VIOLATIONS


Tbilisi, 28 March ‘04, Inter-Press - Representatives of the International Society for Fair Elections and Democracy, which is a domestic non-governmental organization of Georgia, has observed numerous serious violations during the March 28 parliamentary elections throughout Georgia. Representatives of the organizations, observing elections at all polling stations of Georgia, reported that violations during voting procedures have been discovered at polling stations of Marneuli, Kutaisi, Zugdidi, Tkibuli, Gurjaani, as well as at the Chugureti and Nadzaladevi elections precincts of Tbilisi. The list of violations includes double voting, unsealed ballot papers, inaccuracies during voter marking procedures, hijacking of voter lists, stuffing of ballot boxes with forged ballots.

20. CEC: ELECTIONS MIGHT BE DECLARED ABOLISHED AT 75TH POLLING STATION OF ZUGDIDI


Tbilisi, 28 March ’04, Prime-News. - Elections might be declared abolished at 75th polling station of Zugdidi. As the chairman of Central Election Commission Zurab Chiaberashvili declared at the press conference on Sunday, relatives and friends of a murdered young person locked 75th polling station of Zugdidi in the morning. According to Chiaberashvili, the control paper was not dropped in the election box of Zugdidi 40th polling station. In addition, as Chiaberashvili remarked, marking detector went wrong at one of the polling stations of Dedoplistkaro though the problem was resolved soon.

21. ZURAB CHIABERASHVILI: KVEMO KARTLI REGION STILL DAMAGES POLLING IMAGE


Tbilisi, 28 March ’04, Prime-News. - Chairman of Central election Commission Zurab Chiaberashvili declares that Kvemo Kartli region still damages the image of polling in Georgia. As Zurab Chiaberashvili stated at the press conference, voting cabins failed to exist at 41st and 47th polling stations as a result of which voters used to enter classrooms and realize electing process there. The CEC chairman applied to the general prosecutor's office for investigating the issue of Bolnisi 30th polling station, where already marked bulletins were delivered to voters. According to Chiaberashvili, marking was not realized at 12th polling station of Marneuli region.
