Description, Mission and Values

The Mission of the DSC Art Department is to provide the necessary tools for students to become well- rounded artists, scholars and life-long learners. The department aims to accomplish this by combining comprehensive studio and art historical training with a strong liberal arts curriculum. That curriculum aims at meeting the needs or desires of students working towards a Bachelor of Art/Science in Art with a choice of emphasis areas, a Bachelor of Art/Science in Integrated Studies, or an Associate of Art/Science degree. The program also serves the needs of students working to complete the fine arts requirements of the General Education curriculum and students wanting to find a creative component to their studies.

Additionally, the DSC Art Department works closely with community artist and art groups to enrich the

community’s artistic experience in the DSC service area.


Art Program outcomes have been specifically articulated. Graduates of DSC’s BA/BS Art Program will be

able:


  1. To produce a body of work (portfolio) suitable for seeking opportunities in art and design

  2. To solve creative problems within the field of art

  3. To communicate ideas using relevant visual, oral, and written presentation skills

  4. To evaluate work, including their own work, using professional terminology

  5. To have a solid understanding o the development of art throughout history.

The program outcomes fall under the overall umbrella of the DSC Mission Statement:


“Dixie State College is a publicly supported institution of higher education that strives to enrich its community and the lives of individual students by providing associate and baccalaureate degrees and certificates, by fostering lifelong learning, and by sponsoring activities and events that meet the educational and cultural needs of its regional constituents. Dixie State College accomplishes these objectives directly by delivering excellent teaching in a learning environment recognized for its personal relationships, values, service, diversity, and open access, and by creating strategic partnerships for learning opportunities.” (2011-2012 Catalog –Dixie State College)
The course and program objectives are also harmonious with the institution’s three Core Themes, which

are: A Culture of Learning, A Culture of Values, and A Culture of Community.


Unit Governance, Leadership, and Faculty

The current Program Director is Professor Del Parson, who was appointed to that position in accordance with DSC academic structure policies. The Program Director reports to the Chair of the Fine Arts Department, which includes Art, Dance, and Theatre. That department is part of the Division of Fine Arts in the School of Arts and Letters.

The Art Program consists of well qualified faculty members with terminal degrees ranging from national and international institutions. Art faculty maintain membership in national arts organizations such as NCECA – National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts, CAA – College Arts Association and NAEA – National Arts Education Association. Faculty members have served on or are currently serving on college committees inclusive of Executive, Academic and Student Services. All faculty members are practicing artists and scholars with an impressive combined body of work. As of this date (June, 2012) searches are being conducted for two new art faculty members: a full-time 3D/Sculpture/Art Education position, and a .74 lecturer/advisor.

Courses and Programs Offered

Students pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Art complete a required core of course and then select and emphasis from the following options: 3D/Sculpture/Ceramics, Graphic Design, Painting/Drawing, Photogrpahy/Digital Imagery, or Art Education.


The program consists of a range of both studio and art history course offerings. Studio courses are inclusive of lower and upper division design both 2D and 3D, ceramics and sculpture, drawing and painting, photography both process and digital and mixed media. Art history courses are inclusive of general survey, art history I and II, and variation of upper division art time period focus courses.
Assessment and Effectiveness

The Art program has been evolving varied assessment to support student learning. This has been inclusive of Advisor/Critic inclusive of discussion and critique of individual faculty or faculty members with art student pertaining to development, work ethic and individual statement.


Portfolio critique has been implemented to review student outcome in both visual work and history/criticism for studio and art history. Student exhibition has been implemented as final articulation as gallery show and and/or project or research presentation. The program has also implemented and ongoing evaluation and documentation of alumni academic and professional success.

Major Accomplishments, Significant Trends and Changes

The major advance in program offerings is the approval to grant baccalaureate degrees, which was achieved in May of 2012. This approval opens important new opportunities for students and for program growth.


Enrollment in Art courses has significantly increased over the last five years. This trend has been due to students selecting art as part of their Integrated Studies degree. The much-anticipated approval of stand- alone Art degrees has also contributed to program growth. Students have graduated and continued study in graduate degrees in Fine Arts. Students have been awarded fellowships and graduate teaching positions at major universities regionally and nationally.
Art department curriculum has expanded greatly with the addition of numerous upper division courses related to all studio disciplines as well as additional art history offerings. The art department has worked on making both studio and lecture courses correspond with offerings in the state of Utah relating to contact hours and extended studio courses.
More students have also taken advantage of the Art Program trips to Los Angeles, San Francisco and Europe. There have also been the recent additions of student oriented seminars inclusive of the Business of Art and student exhibition opportunities through the City of St. George and local art galleries. Students have also worked on internships with local artists and art organizations as part of the department’s Art Internship course.
Department Resources

The Art Department has recently added an art historian to its faculty along with a new faculty member teaching courses in both Art and Visual Technologies. Adjunct faculty members have expanded to teaching varied upper division courses with focus on some areas of differing expertise. Along with students hired as work study support, varied students have taken on work with studio maintenance, darkroom help, kiln room assistance and exhibition of student work throughout the art building.


The facility that houses the program is a remodeled grocery store. A new darkroom for photography students to process film and a new 3D/sculpture studio are recent facility additions. The addition of external kilns for ceramics has enabled accelerated processes and variations in firing for 3D students. The majority of the classrooms, whether studio or lecture, have been equipped with video projection to enable more advanced teaching methodologies in both media and online access.
It is the goal of the Art Program to develop and make inclusive a variety of graphic design courses and studio facilities. This would involve the use of extended technology with computer and printing access to students in the art building. The department has also need of a full-time sculptor and/or art educator to further encompass the expanse of courses and disciplines.
It is the hope of the Art Department and faculty that the institution will work toward fulfilling these necessary gaps and areas of deficiency to promote an extensive program and growing need in the visual arts.

Plans for the Future

With the attainment of bachelor’s degrees, the immediate and long-term challenge for the program is to demonstrate achievement of program outcomes by delivering high-quality training. Assessing program success and using assessment result for further improvement will be the pattern of program development. As student enrollments grow, providing additional faculty resource will be a vital part of maintaining quality. Although the new degrees have carefully developed curricula, additional course offerings will make the emphasis choices more robust and provide students with an even better array of learning opportunities.



Careful and sustainable curriculum development will be an important and on-going activity.
Facilities alone do not assure quality, but appropriate facilities are nonetheless a vital factor in program success. While the current home of the Art Program—a remodeled grocery store—provides for some of the basic training needs of the curriculum, the program has now grown to the point that its current physical home limits student opportunities program growth. Providing a new home for the Art Program has received attention in campus master planning. It is now vital to move those plans forward.

Program Description: The Dixie State College Dance program is a part of the Fine Arts Department in the Division of Arts Letters and Sciences. It is in harmony with the educational role assigned to the college by the state system of higher education and it is a comprehensive community college dance program. Academic activities are designed to meet the needs of general education students, prospective dance majors, and students who are prospective majors in theatre, music, and physical education who need dance training to supplement training in their intended majors, as well as students from the local community with interests in dance.
In 1994, most dance courses in the Physical Education department were transferred to Fine Arts, and a part time dance instructor was hired. In July 2000, a full time dance faculty (the Director of Dance) position was created to replace the part-time position. The Director of Dance, Dr. Li Lei, has worked cohesively with the Art, Communication, Music and Theatre faculty in the Fine Arts Department on the development of dance program. Since the fall of 2000, the End-of-Semester Dance Class Showing has been held during the end of each semester, which provides students an opportunity to share in personal creative growth.
One of the responsibilities of the Director of Dance is to create a dance performance group. In September 2001, the Dixie State Dance Company was created and established by the Director of Dance, Dr. Li Lei. Since the fall of 2001, Dixie State Dance Company has presented its annual Fall Dance Concert and Spring Dance Concert to Dixie students, faculty, staff, and community members.
The dance concerts and dance class showings have offered meaningful dance experiences to dance students and community audience members. One of the purposes of the dance productions is to gain more momentum and support from the parents and community members, and to involve them as partners in the education process by utilizing their skills and knowledge to support the development of Dixie Dance Program, as well as to provide entertainment activities for our community members.
The Director of Dance has been taking the responsibility for dance curriculum development. The dance curriculum consists of theory, technique, composition, and performance courses, including Dance Appreciation, Modern Dance, Ballet, Jazz Dance, Dance Composition, Ballroom Dance, and Dance Company. Students who successfully complete Dixie College dance program course work will be prepared to transfer to four-year institution dance program.
Mission and Values: The mission of Dixie State College dance program is to provide a diverse population of students an opportunity to achieve their dance education goals and to develop discipline, self-confidence and self- motivation that are vitally important to a career in any field. Dixie State College dance program gives students a foundation in the profession of the art of dance by providing an educational environment in which technique training, performance opportunities and creative projects compliment and reinforce each other. The dance program offers the highest standard service in the areas of academic education and community education for students and community members.
The Dixie State Dance Company provides dance students at Dixie State College with the best environment for dance performing experience and training. The goal of the company is to prepare students in dance technique and artistic expression aspects for dance performances and for their future dance career through rehearsing dance productions

and learning dance techniques and performing skills that are required for dance performances. Faculty emphasize the development of personal discipline, collaborative skills and creative expression. Dixie State Dance Company enables the serious dance students to gain and master the tools necessary to bring them the foundations of critical thinking and creative discipline. It helps the students begin to develop the personal dance identity and full maturity with which one can flourish in the professional art world and can function as an independent artist in today's society. The Dance Company presents two performances per year to Dixie students, faculty/staff, and community members.
