ANTI-BULLYING POLICY - #541 (policy page 25)ARRIVAL TIME TO SCHOOLBuses arrive at 9:00 AM or soon after. Students should NOT arrive before 9:00 AM. School begins at 9:15 AM. Students arriving after 9:15 AM must “check in“ the office for a pass to class to avoid being marked tardy or absent.
ATTENDANCE (Attendance hot line 651-982-8905) District #831 School Board believes that regular school attendance is directly related to success in academic work, benefits students socially, provides opportunities for important communication between teachers and students, and establishes regular habits of dependability important to the future of the student. (See Truancy for other specific regulations.) It is the parent/guardian’s responsibility to telephone the school at 651-982-8905 to inform the office the reason for the student’s absence. This is a 24-hour telephone number and you may leave a message. Please do not leave a message with the teacher as they may not hear the message until the end of the day. Also, please notify the school if you plan to pick up your child early for a doctor or dental appointment. If your child is going to be away for 3 school days or more, parents are required to complete a pre-arranged absence form available in the office so make up work may be arranged. ATTENDANCE POLICY The purpose of this policy is to encourage regular school attendance (refer to pink open house Attendance Guidelines handout). Minnesota Statute requires that children attend school. For students under the age of 16, it is presumed that it is a parental responsibility to ensure the child’s attendance. Regular attendance in school is mandatory; therefore, all absences are subject to verification by school officials. Excessive absence is defined as 4 or more consecutive days of absence, 4 or more days of absence in a month, 7 or more days of absence in a school year. The average student in the State of Minnesota misses a total of seven days of absence in a school year. Therefore, Columbus has an attendance committee and policy in place: Letter #1 informs parent/guardian of what our records indicate (at approximately 7 absences); please contact the principal at 651-982-8902 to discuss this matter. Letter #2 requires a doctor’s statement that explains your child’s illness or medical condition and how it affects your child’s ability to attend school. Contact the principal at 651-982-8902 to discuss this matter. Letter #3 informs you that we are referring this matter to the County authorities for possible Educational Neglect. ABSENCE REPORTING PROCEDUREIf your child is reported absent from the class and we have not received a phone call or prior notice of their absence, your child will be marked unexcused. We ask parents to call the school office at 651-982-8905 and let us know the reason your child will not be attending school.
A  REMINDER: in the past couple of years several parents have observed “Take Your Child To Work Day”. The school district DOES NOT recognize this day in the school calendar. Therefore, if you chose to have your child go to work with you it will count as a day of absence by the request of the parent and may affect your child’s perfect attendance record. The school district supports children going to work with parents on non-school days such as teacher workdays, vacations days, or during the summer.
