As part of grades 3-6 media/technology/classroom instruction, Forest Lake Area Schools has created Google Apps for Education accounts for students to allow for student access to Google email and Google Docs. These tools will be used expressly for school-related purposes and will support teaching and learning by allowing teachers and students to collaboratively share information through documents—including word processing, spreadsheets, presentations, and email communication—developed as a part of class assignments. All students involved have a secure login and password that parents/guardians, and teachers will also know. We recommend that parents/guardians regularly review their child’s account. Teachers have access to each student’s account but the school will not be effectively able to be the primary monitor of each student’s account. We recommend that, as a parent/guardian, you monitor your child’s use of this technology as you would monitor your child’s use of other technologies and that you remain engaged in this activity as you do with your child’s other academic endeavors. You will receive login/password information if/when your child begins using Google Apps for instructional purposes. Note that, as with other district technology resources, access to and use of Forest Lake student Google accounts is considered a privilege. Inappropriate use by any student will result in loss of that privilege.

HATSHats, caps and hoods of any kind are not to be worn in the building. They are to be removed at the school doors and stored in each student’s locker or coat hall area. THIS MEANS NO HATS, CAPS, HOODS OR HEADGEAR! Hoods on sweatshirts must be worn down while inside the building. HAZING PROHIBITION DISTRICT POLICY - #431 A complete copy of the school board policy on hazing is found near the end of this handbook. HEALTH OFFICE22 The health office is a first aid station for ill or injured children during school hours. If a student is too ill to remain in class, parents will be called to pick up their child. If a child is injured in school, the parents will be notified regarding a serious injury and asked to pick up their child. Only trained office personnel under direction of our school consulting doctor, Minnesota Department of Health and the American Red Cross administer first aid. HEALTH RECORDSA health record is kept for each child. It follows the child from kindergarten through grade 12. Parents should inform the school regarding their child’s health problems or concerns. HELPFUL HINTS FOR PARENTSVisit your school and learn first hand how your child’s teacher works with the class. Assume the responsibility of checking your child’s progress. Stress the importance of regular attendance and punctuality. Unnecessary absence from school causes a child to fall behind. Be prompt in signing and answering notes from school. Encourage respect, courtesy, and obedience for authority. Provide your child with background experience, field trips, cultural events and regular library use. Encourage good home study habits. Provide a quiet area to study in with a regular time. Talk with your children. Encourage them. Be patient with them. Praise them. Be certain your child gets proper rest. Read to and with your children. Help them develop regular reading habits. HIGH POTENTIAL PROGRAMS The High Potential Program serves students who perform academically in the top 5-10% of the general population. High Potential students can participate in a variety of activities including Math Masters, Young Inventor’s Fair and North Suburban Summer Academy. 13 Columbus offers a Cluster Program serving the needs of students who perform academically in the top 5% of the general population. These students can also participate in any of the programs mentioned above. Teachers who have “cluster” students in their classroom receive intensive training designed to help them meet the needs of gifted students.
