M

is for a multicultural education.

MATH MASTERS

This 5th and 6th grade program challenges students to use critical thinking skills and problem-solving abilities in mathematics, while recognizing academic effort and achievement. Teams will be selected in early spring to begin special preparation for local competition in March.

MEDIA CENTER

The Columbus Media Center is located in the middle of the school, offering easy access for all students and staff. A computerized card catalog and circulation system allows users to quickly find and check out any of the materials in the collection.
The media curriculum is designed to help students become lifelong learners and library users. In addition to checking out recreational and informational reading materials, students in grades 1-6 come to the Media Center once a week for lessons in reference and research, library organization, and literature enrichment. Kindergarten children also come once a week for book check out.

MEDICATION

District 831 has a medication policy that was adopted November 19, 1979. No medications are given in school without written orders from doctor and parental permission; this includes over the counter drugs. Special authorization forms can be obtained from your school. Medications must be in a prescription bottle accompanied by doctor’s orders. Parents should bring medication to school rather than sending it on the bus with the child.

MESSAGES VIA VOICE MAIL OR E-MAIL

Please do not leave time sensitive messages on a teacher’s voice mail or e-mail, such as a change in your child’s transportation after school. Teachers rarely have time to check their voice mail or e-mail before the school day is over, and they will most likely miss this important information.

Call the office at 651-982-8900 to leave time-sensitive messages.

MONEY (SENT TO SCHOOL WITH CHILD)

It is not advisable for students to bring money to school when not necessary. Money for lunch or other school-sanctioned reasons should be sent in a sealed envelope clearly marked with the student’s name. Please use checks, and make them out to the proper organizations. If checks are returned to us from your bank unpaid (NSF, account closed, etc.), we reserve the right to request only cash payments for future expenses.

MUSIC (GENERAL/VOCAL)

Each K-5 classroom meets twice a week for 30 minutes with the music specialist. Teaching is a coordinated program between the music specialist and the classroom teacher. Students learn music appreciation, music theory, and music history. Students sing and play instruments to songs from a variety of cultures. All sixth graders receive one hour of their choice of band, general music or orchestra.
