a. Commanding Officer shall

(1) Be overall responsible for the ship’s zone inspection program.
(2) Participate in zone inspections as an inspector.
(3) Train ship's officers and chief petty officers in the conduct of zone inspections. b. Executive Officer shall
(1) Schedule and publish the date and time of zone inspections, and designate zones to be inspected.
(2) Assign department heads, division officers, chief petty officers, or other senior officers as inspecting officers as appropriate.

(3) Participate in zone inspections as an inspector. c. Engineer Officer shall review requests for assistance for discrepancy correction from other departments and make appropriate recommendations to the Executive Officer. db Damage Control Assistant shall
designate the zones, zone boundaries, number of zones, and the spaces assigned to each zone subject to the review of appropriate department heads and approval of the Executive Officer e. Department Heads shall:
(1) Ensure spaces are prepared and presented for zone inspection.
(2) Monitor correction of noted discrepancies.
(3) Ensure discrepancies that require parts, are recurring equipment failures, require off-ship assistance, or cannot be corrected in five working days are documented in the current ship’s maintenance project (CSMP). f. Division Officers/Chief Petty Officers shall:
(1) If not assigned as zone inspectors, accompany the inspecting officer on all zone inspections in spaces for which they are responsible.

(2) Ensure all lockers, stowage cabinets, drawers, and other enclosures are unlocked.
(3) Assign appropriate divisional personnel to standby to present spaces for inspection.
(4) Assign appropriate personnel, normally petty officers first class, to record discrepancies during the inspection.
(5) Ensure spaces assigned are ready for zone inspection, paying particular attention to safety, damage control, material condition, preservation, and cleanliness.
(6) Review prior inspection reports and ensure noted discrepancies have been corrected/addressed.

(7) Ensure discrepancies that require parts, are recurring equipment failures, require off-ship assistance, or cannot be corrected within 5 working days are entered in the
CSMP.
(8) Report to the Department Head the status of correction of all discrepancies noted.
(9) Immediately correct any discrepancies that cause a space to be graded as UNSATISFACTORY and prepare the space for re-inspection. If discrepancies require outside assistance, an Automated Work Request (AWR) must be submitted immediately and the Job Control Number (JCN) noted on the Zone Inspection Deficiency Listing (ZIDL).
(10) Ensure all safety discrepancies are corrected immediately upon completion of the zone inspection. For those safety discrepancies requiring outside assistance to correct – immediate action must betaken to isolate the safety discrepancy to protect personnel and equipment. g. 3M Coordinator, Safety Officer, Damage Control
