The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Army Distinguished Service Medal to Camille Walch, Brigadier General, French Army, for exceptionally meritorious and distinguished service in a position of great responsibility to the Government of the United States, during World War I. As Chief of the French Artillery attached to the 1st Army Corps, American Expeditionary Forces, during the Meuse-Argonne offensive, General Walch rendered us services of noteworthy distinction. His services were continuously marked by his qualities of leadership and military attainments, which were of a high order. Displaying tireless energy and devotion to his arduous duties, he strove diligently that our Infantry might have all the benefits of efficient Artillery support.

While Commanding the 21st Region, French Army, General Wirbel rendered invaluable service to the American Expeditionary Forces and to the cause in which the United States has been engaged.

The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Army Distinguished Service Medal to Maurice Wissemans, Medical Inspector, French Army, for exceptionally meritorious and distinguished service in a position of great responsibility to the Government of the United States, during World War I. When the 1st American Division went into the Verdun sector for training purposes, he collaborated with the Medical Service of the American Expeditionary Forces in every possible way to the end that our battle casualties should receive proper care. Later, as Chief Surgeon of the Group of Armies of the East, he actively participated in the preparation of the plans for the St. Mihiel and the Argonne offensives. His wide experience in battle conditions and his whole-hearted desire to be of assistance to his country's allies enabled him to render services of great value to the American Expeditionary Forces. He freely placed at the disposition of the American Expeditionary Forces all his resources as to hospitals, ambulance and train transportation, and medical material. His able advice and valuable assistance was a material factor in the provisions for the care and evacuation of our battle casualties. He rendered services of great consequence to the American Expeditionary Forces.

Adye, John

The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Army Distinguished Service Medal to John Adye, Major General, Royal British Army, for exceptionally meritorious and distinguished service in a position of great responsibility to the Government of the United States, during World War I. General Adye's services were of conspicuous merit as a member of the Committee on Return of Prisoners of War. His large experience in the Near East, combined with rare judgment and quiet forcefulness, made his work especially valuable in securing the rapid return of American and allied prisoners and in alleviating their condition.

Allenby, General, Royal British Army, for exceptionally meritorious and distinguished service in a position of great responsibility to the Government of the United States, during World War I. The American Army will every remember General Allenby's valiant services as Commander of the 3d British Army in France from 19154 to 1917, and for his marvelous successes in Palestine, rendering services of distinction to the allied cause.

The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Army Distinguished Service Medal to Stuart M. Anderson, Brigadier General, Royal British Army, for exceptionally meritorious and distinguished service in a position of great responsibility to the Government of the United States, during World War I, with the Royal Artillery, 1st Australian Division, British Expeditionary Forces. The accurate and highly efficient support by the Artillery under General Anderson's command contributed materially to the successful assaults on the Hindenburg line by the 30th U.S. Division, 29 September 1918. The part played by him in achieving that success has won for him the deepest gratitude and admiration on the part of the American officers and soldiers with whom he was cooperating during the great advance.

As Commander of the Embarkation Area of the Port of Southampton, by his earnest spirit of cooperation with the American authorities at the Port of Southampton, General Balfour rendered valuable assistance, offering them every facility at his command for the proper handling of the important problem of troop shipments.

Bessell-Brown, Brigadier General, Royal British Army, for exceptionally meritorious and distinguished service in a position of great responsibility to the Government of the United States, during World War I, while serving with the 5th Australian Division, British Expeditionary Forces. The relations of the American and Australian forces, cooperating with each other, were always marked

with the utmost harmony, but never was the spirit more clearly manifested than during the period from 16 to 19 October 1918 when the 30th U.S. Division went forward in attack against the enemy, supported by artillery under General Bessell-Brown's command. To his consummate technical skill and unflagging energy is due much credit for the successful results attained in these operations.

General Bethell Commanded with distinction the 66th British Division with which the 27th American Division was affiliated during its training period. By his broad-minded policy, personal interest, and careful supervision he gave great assistance to the division, enabling the American troops to readily adapt themselves to the methods and conditions of service with a foreign army.

As General Officer in Charge of Training at British General Headquarters during the period the 2d Army Corps was in the British Expeditionary Forces, General Bonham-Carter rendered exceptional service to the U.S. Army. His knowledge of training methods was extensive, and with loyal cooperation he gave us the benefit of his experience.

Bowdder, Lieutenant Colonel, Royal British Army, for exceptionally meritorious and distinguished service in a position of great responsibility to the Government of the United States, during World War I. While he was on duty in the Intelligence Section at British General Headquarters and as Chief of the Information Section, Lieutenant Colonel Bowdder's assistance and advice in inspecting and training American officers were of distinct advantage to the American Expeditionary Forces. He displayed military attainments of a high order, and at all times cooperated with the American military authorities whole-heartedly.

Bowlby, Major General, Royal British Army, for exceptionally meritorious and distinguished service in a position of great responsibility to the Government of the United States, during World War I. As eminent Consulting Surgeon, and while serving with the British Expeditionary Forces in France, with untiring zeal General Bowlby devoted his time and energy toward cooperating with and unreservedly placing at the disposal of the American Expeditionary Forces his eminent talents, broad experience, and knowledge of general conditions in preventing wastage among our forces from wounds and disease. His research work in wound bacteriology and evacuation resulted in the saving of many lives among our sick and wounded.

General Burgess Commanded with distinction the 4th Australian Artillery Division while it was in support of the 27th American Division during the operations near St. Souplet, east of the La Selle River. His consummate skill as an artillerist and forceful determination in keeping his batteries well to the front were most potent factors in the successes achieved. The services which he rendered to the American Expeditionary Forces were

Burtchaell, Lieutenant General, Royal British Army, for exceptionally meritorious and distinguished service in a position of great responsibility to the Government of the United States, during World War I. As Director General of Medical Service, British Expeditionary Forces, General Burtchaell displayed untiring zeal, eminent talents, and broad experience in providing adequate hospitalization and evacuation facilities for the sick and wounded of the American troops serving with the British Armies. His individual efforts counted largely in enabling the American Medical Service to function efficiently.

Bush, Captain, Royal British Army, for exceptionally meritorious and distinguished service in a position of great responsibility to the Government of the United States, during World War I. At the request of the American Expeditionary Forces, Captain Bush was detailed as Instructor in gas defense, and rendered services of extraordinary merit at the school at Hanlon Field. Largely as the result of his energy, skill, and exact knowledge the school accomplished a most important mission, providing a course of instruction which, when put in practice in the field, prevented many casualties.

As Brigadier General of Intelligence at British General Headquarters, Colonel Charteris rendered most valuable service to the American Expeditionary Forces during the early period of the organization of the staff by placing every facility at the disposal of the American staff officers who were sent to British General Headquarters for the purpose of instruction. He displayed military attainments of high order, tireless energy, and marked zeal in the performance of his exacting duties. He was at all times tactful and proved himself a loyal friend.
