Carrie Duncan Bain, 89, of Radford, passed away Friday, May 2, 2003, at the New River Valley Medical Center. She attended the West Radford Church of God. She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank Thomas Bain, and a daughter, Edith Lytton. Survivors include three sons, Romalee Bain of Christiansburg, Curtis Bain of Pulaski, and Silas Bain of Radford; three brothers, Lincoln Duncan, Hobert Duncan, and Troy Duncan, all of Radford; three sisters, Helen Dickerson, Bertha Moore and Clydie Morris, all of Radford; 16 grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; and six great great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Monday, May 5, 2003, at 2 p.m. at the West Radford Church of God with the Rev. Arthur Harris, Rev. Jim Walker, Rev. Mike Bond, and Rev. Pete Flinchum officiating. Interment will follow in West View Cemetery in Radford. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the West Radford Church of God. Arrangements by Mullins Funeral Home in Radford.

BAKER, Ila H., 85, of Radford, passed away Sunday, May 7, 2000 at Heritage
Hall Nursing Home in Blacksburg. She was a member of Gethsemane Baptist
Church. Survivors include her husband, Roscoe M. Baker of Radford; two
daughters, Mary Ann Stockner of Christiansburg, Merrell Newby of New Port
Ritchie, Fla.; one brother, Thurman Harris of Roanoke; three sisters, Ocie
Marshall of Christiansburg, Treva Henly, Clydia Henly, both of Radford; one
halfsister, Louise Lyle of Radford; three grandchildren; two
great-grandchildren. Graveside services will be held Tuesday, May 9, 2000 at
11 a.m. at the West View Cemetery in Radford with Pastor Jerry Gibson
officiating. Interment will follow in West View Cemetery. The family will
receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Monday at the Mullins Funeral Home in
Radford.

BAKER, MSGT (Ret.) USAF. Joseph Edwin, 73, of 136 Grant Drive, died Monday, May 19, 2003 at Wayne Memorial Hospital. A native of Pulaski, Virginia, he was the son of the late Harley Owen Baker and Beulah Elizabeth Chummley Baker. He was also preceded in death by his sister, Elizabeth Sivak. Mr. Baker retired from the United States Air Force after proudly serving his country for 23 years. He served during the Korean Conflict and had three tours of duty during the Vietnam War, during that time he was awarded with two bronze stars. After his military career, Mr. Baker worked with J.P. Stevens and retired from Standard Products. Mr. Baker is survived by his wife, Ann P. Baker; his children, JoAnne B. Joyner of the home, Barbara Kay B. Scheetz of Hampton, Va., Robert Owen Baker and wife, Karen of Mount Olive, N.C. and Elizabeth B. "Beth" Gettle and husband, Mark of Goldsboro, N.C.; his grandchildren, Melissa Koos and husband, Eric, Sara Baker, Alison Baker, Meredith Baker, Lukas Baker, Kelly Gettle and Brett Gettle; a great-grandson, Ryan Koos; and his brothers, H.O. "Buddy" Baker of Roanoke, Va., William A. Baker of Goldsboro, N.C., John C. Baker of Alexandria, Va., and George D. Baker of Alexandria, Va. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 12 noon at Seymour Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. William Ordelt officiating. Interment with full military honors will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. at the Sandhills Veteran Cemetery in Spring Lake, N.C. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Lung Association, P.O. Box 1407, Greenville, N.C. 27835. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Seymour Funeral Home and other times at the residence.

BAKER, Joseph Mack, 83, of 4257 Draper Valley Road, Draper, Va., died Monday night, March 17, 2003, in the Pulaski Community Hospital. He was born in Pulaski County on September 16, 1919, and was the son of the late Joseph Edward Baker and Zetta Stilwell Baker. He was also preceded in death by three brothers and one sister. Mr. Baker was the Chief Forest Warden for the Virginia Division of Forestry headquartered in Salem, Va. Mr. Baker was a member of: Southwest Virginia Forestry Board for 20 years, State Forestry Board for 14 years, Dublin Farm Bureau for 49 years, Last Charter Member of the Draper Ruritan Club for 58 years, Charter Member of the Southwest Virginia Fireman's Association for 57 years, New River Valley Fair Board. The Pulaski County Board of Supervisors and the Virginia Division of Forestry hired Mr. Baker as the Chief Forest Warden on February 1, 1957. He was on call 24 hours a day in Pulaski County and any other areas of the state. He retired in 1985. At the request of the Pulaski County Board of Supervisors, he was asked to form a committee for all Pulaski Volunteer Fire Department and Rescue Groups to form a community-wide group. He was, also, asked to help organize the Snowville and Parrott Fire Departments. During World War II, Mr. Baker organized between Pulaski County and the Draper Unit what was called the Raid Unit and Bridgett Brigade Civil Defense. Mr. Baker was a trustee and member of the Draper Christian Church (Disciples in Christ). Surviving are his wife of 63 years, Martha S. Baker of Draper, Va.; son and daughter-in-law, Edwin (Eddie) and Deborah Baker of Macon, Ga. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. from Stevens Funeral Chapel, Pulaski with Pastor Gene Akers officiating. Burial will follow in the Draper's Valley Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Draper. Visiting will be Wednesday evening at Stevens Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. The family wishes that memorials be made to the Draper Christian Church (Disciples in Christ), Draper, Va. 24324. Funeral service will be held for Mrs. Sarah MCGUIRE BANE, 70, Pulaski, Saturday at 2 p.m. at Stevens Funeral Home, with the Rev. John R. Campbell in charge. Burial will be in the family plot in Oakmont Cemetery. Mrs. BANE died Thursday in Mattie Williams Hospital, Richlands.

Pallbearers will be Ned B. BANE, J.H. WHITE, Joe W. ROBINSON, T.M. COMBITHS Jr., W.H. WYSOR Jr., and S.A. DEWEY.

Surviving are two sons, Donald M. BANE, Pulaski and Lt.Col. John M. BANE, Forbes AFB, Topeka, Kan.; one sister, Mrs. T.W. FUGATE, Roanoke; one brother, Marvin MCGUIRE, Richlands, and five grandchildren.

Mrs. BANE was the widow of Fred BANE, who died in 1954. She was a member of the Pulaski Woman's Club, Friday and Thursday Morning Bridge Clubs and the S ??? Book Club.

BARKER, George Calvin, 73, of Prices Fork, went to be with his Lord and
Savior, Jesus Christ, Wednesday, January 17, 2001 from Montgomery Regional
Hospital. He was born in Montgomery County, Va. on April 11, 1927 to the
late Charles Jefferson and Lula Reed Barker. George was a very devoted
Christian and was a member of The Church of God. He worked as a cheese maker
for 12 years followed by employment at Radford Arsenal. George retired from
Virginia Tech after 17 years of service with the Security Department. He was
preceded in death by three brothers and two sisters. He is survived by his
loving wife, Nora Esther Sheppard Barker of Prices Fork; one son, Calvin
Dean Barker of Prices Fork and friend, Mamie Jones of Blacksburg; two
sisters and one brother-in-law, Ethel B. Young of Christiansburg, Gladiola
and James Howard Dowdy of Pilot; one sister-in-law, Zelva Barker of
Christiansburg; one brother and sister-in-law, Frank and Lois Barker of
Blacksburg; special friends, Chris and Crystal Dickerson, Ray and Nora
Stover, Daniel, Randy, April and Katelyn Stover, Della, Paul, and Jonathan
Hetherington, Eunice and James Jones, Lynn Akers; many nieces and nephews
and wonderful friends who will miss him. Funeral services will be conducted
Sunday, January 21, 2001 at 2 p.m. in The Church of God, Ellett Road, with
the Rev. Jerry Buckner, Rev. Charles Wickline, Rev. Cecil Frazier and Rev.
Prince Hartley officiating. Interment will follow in the Westview Cemetery,
Blacksburg. Friends may call anytime Saturday and the family will receive
friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday evening at the McCoy Funeral Home,
Blacksburg.

The funeral of Thomas J. BARNES, veteran employee of the Norfolk and Western, who died Tuesday at Allisonia from pneumonia, was held Thursday afternoon at 1'oclock from the Pentecostal Holiness Church at Allisonia. The services were conducted by the Rev. W.M. Selvey, assisted by J.L. Keeling, both of Pulaski. Burial was in the Allisonia cemetery.

LUTHER CLYDE AKERS, age 86, of Archer Road, Max Meadows, Virginia died Tuesday, November 28, 2000 in the Birdmont Health Care Center. He was born in Wythe County, the son of the late Elbert S. and Sallie Elizabeth Boyd Akers and was preceded in death by a son, Elbert Rudolph "Rass" Akers. He was a Wythe County farmer. He is survived by: his wife - Etta Mae Akers of the home; four daughters - Mary Ellen "Susie" Rose of Max Meadows, Eva Mae "Eugie" Phillips of Winston-Salem, NC, Sally Christine "Ladygal" Sayers of Greenville, SC and Darlene Odessa "Shorty" Creech of Huntsville, TX; two sons - Luther Dueane Akers of Winston-Salem, NC, and Tim Maynard Akers of Max Meadows, VA; one sister - Mae Akers of Charlottesville, VA; three brothers - Joseph S. Akers of Wytheville, VA, James E. Akers of Charlottesville, VA and Donald "Hoot" Akers of Charlottesville, VA; twenty-two grandchildren, 34 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, November 30, 2000 at 3:00 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Chapel. Interment will follow in the Mt. Zion Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the Barnett Funeral Home from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. Wednesday or at the home at any time. Barnett Funeral Home in Wytheville, Virginia is in charge of the arrangements.

Funeral services for Roby K. BAUMGARDNER, 22, who was accidentally killed last week by a live wire while working for the Bell Telephone Co., of Shreveport, La., were held yesterday from the Thomas M. Seagle and Sons Funeral Home with burial at Little Walker Creek. The Rev. M.A. Stevenson, assisted by the Rev. W.D. Larrowe, was in charge of the services.

American Legion post No. 7 was in charge of military rites at the cemetery.



The son of Mr. and Mrs. Roby A. BAUMGARDNER, the deceased moved to Louisiana several years ago. He is a grandson of C. Kelly KING, Pulaski County.

Berlie Garland Beamer, 82, passed away Friday, July 4, 2003 at her home in Belspring. She as a member of Belspring United Methodist Church. She was a loving and hard working wife and mother. She was an excellent cook and enjoyed sharing her meals with friends, family and the sick. Survivors include her husband, William P. Beamer, Sr. of Belspring; a daughter, Patricia B. Cox of Elliston; a son, William Preston Beamer, Jr. of Radford; five grandchildren; two brothers, Arthur Garland of Gray, Tenn. and Frank Don Garland of Grand Island, Fla.; and three sisters, Bernice G. Stair of Roanoke, Beulah Wilson of Grand Island, Fla., and Myrtle Carroll of Christiansburg. Funeral services will be held Monday, July 7, 2003 at 3 p.m. at the Belspring United Methodist Church with Rev. Maria Grimm. Interment will follow in the Highland Memory Gardens in Dublin. The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Sunday at the church. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to either the Belspring United Methodist Church or the Carilion Hospice Services. BEAMER, William Preston Sr., (Grump), 86, passed away Thursday, July 17, 2003 at his home in Belspring. He was a member of Belspring United Methodist Church and a W.W.II U. S. Army veteran. He was a retired line foreman at RAAP with over 30 years of service. He was preceded in death on July 4, 2003 by his wife of 51 years, Berlie Garland Beamer. He was also preceded in death by his mother and father, Robert P. and Nellie Faye Albert Beamer, two sisters, Mabel Coyner and Margaret Kinser, and a brother, Billy Joe Beamer. Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Patricia B. and Kenney Cox of Elliston; a son, William Preston Beamer, Jr. of Radford; five grandchildren, Wade Cox, David Cox, Katie Day Beamer, Mary Lee Beamer and Benjamin Scott Beamer; and three sisters, Gilda Williams of Radford, and Gaynell Wright and Dotie Showalter, both of Hiwassee. The family would like to express their deep appreciation to all the special friends and family who brought food, called, visited and prayed with us. We would also like to thank Carilion Hospice for their loving care and support. Funeral services will be held Saturday, July 19, 2003 at 10:00 a.m. at the Belspring United Methodist Church with Rev. Maria Grimm officiating. Interment will follow in the Highland Memory Gardens in Dublin where members of VFW Post #776 will conduct military graveside rites. The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Friday at the church. David Fleming BEASLEY, 94, died Saturday night in a home for the aged.

Born in Carroll County, the son of the late Thomas Keston BEASLEY and Jemimah ALLEN BEASLEY, he is survived by two sons, Ray BEASLEY, Kingsport, Tenn., and Harley BEASLEY, Miami, Fla.; six daughters, Mrs. R.R. RAGAN, Roanoke, Mrs. C.N. MARTIN, Pocahontas; Mrs. C.L. CREGER, and Mrs. E.L. MILLER, both of Dublin; Mrs. Sam MARTIN, Pulaski and Mrs. O.L. BEDSAUL, Jenkinjones, W. Va.; 25 grandchildren, 36 great-grandchildren.



Funeral services will be held today at 3 p.m. from Thomas M. Seagle and Sons Funeral Home, with the Rev. P.H. Horner officiating. Burial will follow in the Dublin Cemetery. Pallbearers will be grandsons. The body will remain at the funeral home.

Frances Trail Beckner "Mimi", 73, formerly of Roanoke arrived on time for her appointment with the KING OF KINGS, Saturday, March 8, 2003. The angels carried her to the appointment to meet her Savior. She was preceded in death by her dear husband of 53 years, Lacy C. Beckner; parents, Hayden J. and Maggie Mae Trail of Pulaski, Va.; her brother, Irvin "Pete" Trail of Roanoke; her beloved sister, Dorothy Trail Caywood Harrison of Pulaski; and her nephew, Ricky Caywood of Roanoke. She is loved and will be remembered by her daughter, Brenda Beckner Liles and her fiancŽ, Lee Prosser of Pulaski; sons, Lacy Allen Beckner and wife, Susan Beckner, and Alton Claude Beckner, all of Roanoke; niece, ReneŽ Caywood Steele and her husband, Jonny of Dublin; grandchildren, Candice Beckner, Matthew Beckner, Kristie Matney and husband, Brandon, all of Roanoke, Dewayne Beckner and wife, Melissa of New York; great-grandsons, Devin and Emanuel Beckner, both of Roanoke; and her dear friends, Betty Dyson of Salem, Melvin Whitaker of Pulaski and David Hodges of Rocky Mount. Frances loved the Lord with all of her heart and if you had ever met her, her following words will sound familiar, "May I ask you a personal question? Have you accepted the Lord as your personal Savior?" In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to the Shenandoah Baptist Church Mission Fund, 6520 Williamson Road, Roanoke, Va. 24019. A memorial service will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday, March 15, 2003, at Shenandoah Baptist Church, 6520 Williamson Road, by Pastor Robert Alderman, Pastor Art Hearne and Pastor Mike Wingfield. Her remains will be inurned with her husband's in Arlington National Cemetery at a later date. The family will receive friends one hour prior to and following the memorial service on Saturday.
