WILSON

Frances

HARVEY

Wednesday, June 27, 1906

WILSON, Frances Harvey, (Dilcie), 95, of Martinsville, went to be with the Lord on Monday, December 11, 2001. Born at Snowville in Pulaski County June 27, 1906 on her family farm to Lewis and Bettie Trolinger Harvey, descendents of early settlers who moved to Southwest Virginia seeking fertile land and salt petre for gunpowder during the Revolutionary War. She moved to Radford with her four brothers and three sisters the day after Christmas, 1906 so they could attend Radford City Schools. Her strong Protestant mother and father, were young children during the War between the States and were firm but loving parents having suffered the rigors of a post-war Virginia economy. Greatly influenced by those examples of an earlier time around her, she nonetheless thrived on routine household chores and the joy of school friends. A great sadness however, was the death of her brother, Fred in WWI by German enemy fire only days before the 1918 armistice, an event that cost her mother to wear black in honor of her son most of the remainder of her life. Dilcie graduated from Radford College in 1952 and Brenau College, Gainesville, Ga. in 1927. She married Alec Charles Wilson on November 29, 1929 and moved to Martinsville the following month at the beginning of the Great Depression. They moved to their new $4000 home July 4, 1930 and there she lived for more than 71 years. Early she joined the First Presbyterian Church in Martinsville, the Current Events Club, Joseph Martin Chapter of DAR and was a Charter Member of the Beaver Creek Garden Club. She was a mother, homemaker and President of Wilson Quarries for nearly a decade after her husbands death in 1979. Known for her strong work ethics and witty sayings, she was quick to say a kind word. She will be greatly missed. Surviving are two sons, Robert Littleton Wilson and his wife, Patricia S. Wilson and Alec Charles Wilson, Jr. and his wife, Lucy C. Wilson; a granddaughter, Sabra Wilson Hope. Also surviving are stepgrandchildren, Adele Mattox and Samuel Travis Mattox and his wife, Margaret L. Mattox; great-grandchildren, Mark Alexander Hope, Jr. and Sarah France Hope and Robert Charles Wilkerson Hope. Her body will rest are her home at 712 Mulberry Rd., Martinsville, where her family will receive friends Thursday evening. A funeral service will be held at First Presbyterian Church, Patrick Henry Ave., Martinsville, Va. on Friday, December 14, 2001 at 11 a.m. Interment will follow at Oakwood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Massanetta Presbyterian Conference Center, 712 Massanetta Springs Road, Harrisonburg, Va. 22801. Phone: 540-434-3829.
