Sunday, November 10, 1901

Cranston “Crint” Whited, age 101 of Marengo, died Monday, January 27, 2003 at Grady Memorial Hospital.

He was born on November 10, 1901 in Swords Creek, Virginia to the late Charles and Cloe (Cole) Whited. He moved into the Marengo area in 1924. Was a lifelong farmer and worked on the railroad throughout his life. Crint had also worked at the Marion Ordinance Plant and the North Electric factory in Galion officially retiring in 1962.

He was a member of the Alum Creek Friends Church and the Seniors on Center, Mt. Gilead. He loved gardening, eating at Ponderosa and was a part of the breakfast bunch at the Farmstead Inn, Marengo. He enjoyed watching wrestling, Wheel of Fortune, westerns and The Price is Right. He was still living on the family farm at the age of 101 aided only by a cane.

Survived by Son: Dale (Lillian) Whited of Marengo, Daughter: Pat (Ed) Cochran of Marengo, Grandchildren: Jeff (Julie), Doyle (Kitty), Kevin, Karen (Mike) Cremeans, Tamara Cochran, Sabrina (Jeff) Lawson, Great-Grandchildren: Amanda, Britney, Austin, Bryan, Kerry II, Amanda, Tracey, Adam, Samantha, Brooke, Jason, and TC Cremeans, Brother: Clyde of Pulaski, VA.

Preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Eva Mae (Elliott) on May, 4 1982, Brothers: Carl, Burk, Virgil, Arnold, and Kenneth, Sisters: Elanie Ray, Grace and Maggie Whited, Grandson: Kerry Cochran I.

Friends may call Thursday 4-7 PM at the DeVore-Snyder Funeral Home, SR 229, Marengo. Funeral services will be held Friday at 1:00 PM at the Alum Creek Friends Church, Pastor’s Charles Robinson and James Brantingham officiating. Burial will follow at the Alum Creek Friends Cemetery.

Woodrow Prentiss Whittaker, 38, died suddenly on December 28 at the home of his niece, Mrs. Curtis Hall, in Radford. His is survived by his widow, the former Miss Margaret Richardson; his mother, Mrs. M. H. Whittaker, of Tazewell; two daughters, Eleanor and Josephine, both of Dublin; six brothers; M. L. of Tazewell; Henry of Bel Air, Md. C.H. of New Orleans, La. ; L. H. or Arlington, Va. S. C. of Bluefield; Sgt. T. H. Whittaker of the U. S. Air Force; four sisters, Mrs. C. G. Yost, Baptist Valley; Mrs. Lilly Umberger, of Washington D. C.; Mrs. Spenser Bayes of Richlands and Mrs. C. H. Williams of Princeton. Funeral services were held on Wednesday afternoon at the home of M. L. Whittaker in Tazewell, the service being in charge of the Rev. Eustis Russian of Radford, assisted by the Rev. Ortie Bradshaw, pastor of the Tazewell Baptist Church. Interment was in Maplewood Cemetery. Pallbearers were nephews; Garland, Ernest, Raymond and Donald Whittaker, Kenneth and Ralph Yost.

WICKLINE, Ernest Ray, 83, of New Town Road, Shawsville, died Tuesday,
September 22, 1998 at Montgomery Regional Hospital. He was preceded in
death by his wife, "Sis"; one son, Buddy; two great-grandchildren, Chelsea
Raines and Jason Wickline; one brother, Avis Wickline; one sister, Letha
Terry; and two brothers-in-law, Pete Boothe and Charles Boothe. He is
survived by two daughters and two sons and their spouses, Mildred W. Raines
and husband Junior of Elliston, Mary Welcher and husband Jeff of Ironto,
Robert ("Bob") Wickline and wife Hazel of Christiansburg, Danny R. Wickline
and wife Debbie of Shawsville; one daughter-in-law, Shirley Wickline of
Wirtz; 15 grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren;
seven great-great-grandchildren; one special friend, Geneva Allen of Union,
W.Va.; two sisters, Sylvia Dalton of Christiansburg, and Maude Smith of
Shawsville. Funeral service 11 a.m. Friday, September 25, 1998 at the
Richardson-Horne Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Willie Yates
and the Rev. Gary Sheppard. Burial will follow in the Peterstown Cemetery.
Friends may call anytime after 10 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home, where
the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. The family requests in
lieu of flowers that contributions be made to the Shawsville Rescue Squad,
P.O. Box 14, Shawsville, VA 24162. The family is being served by
Richardson-Horne Funeral Home, Christiansburg. "Poppy, you were more than a
grandfather, you were like our dad. We will miss you so much. Love, your
brats, Denyse and Tracy. You will always be in our hearts."

WIKLE, Mary Stoots, 70, of Dublin, died Sunday, April 30, 2000 in the
Carilion New River Valley Medical Center. Born on March 30, 1930 in Wythe
County, she was the daughter of Mary Alderman Stoots and the late Joe Basil
Stoots. She was a long time member of Dublin United Methodist Church. She
was preceded in death by her husband, Evert Leslie Wikle; a son, Steven
Edwin Wikle; and a brother, Ronald Gray Stoots. She is survived by her
mother, Mary Alderman Stoots, Dublin; three daughters, Mrs. William "Lynn"
Earles, Dublin, Mary Jo Wikle, Big Stone Gap, and Mrs. Phillip "Patty"
Baker, Dublin; one son, David Wikle, Christiansburg; also survived by six
grandchildren and one great-grandson. Funeral services will be held Tuesday
at 11 a.m. at Thomas M. Seagle & Sons Funeral Home with the Rev. Richard
Patterson officiating. Entombment will follow in the Highland Memorial
Gardens in Dublin. Visiting will be anytime Monday after 3 p.m. at the
Thomas M. Seagle & Sons Funeral Home where the family will receive friends
from 7 to 9 p.m. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made in

WILBURN, William Thomas, 75, of Shawsville, passed away Sunday, June 22, 2003, in a Tazewell nursing home. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Navy and a U.S. Army veteran, having served in Korea. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Virginia Barton Wilburn; his parents, Claude B. and Lyndell Harris Wilburn; and also by two brothers, Jesse and Don Wilburn. Survivors include four sons, Alan Wilburn of Christiansburg, Monte Wilburn of Parrott, Wade Wilburn of Round Rock, Texas and Troy Wilburn of Boca Raton, Fla.; two brothers, Robert Wilburn of Suffolk and Wade Wilburn of Christiansburg; four sisters, Norma Alliff of Cave Springs, Ruth Wilburn of Pulaski, Jane Wilburn and Patsy Caldwell, both of Radford; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held Wednesday, June 25, 2003, at 1 p.m. at the Riverview Holiness Church in Christiansburg with the Rev. George Jarrell officiating. The family will greet friends following the service at the church. Arrangements by Mullins Funeral Home & Crematory in Radford.

Phoebe Margaret Wiley, 62, of Shawsville, Va. born Nov. 9, 1940 in Pulaski departed from this earth May 23, 2003 to join hands with her Savior. Phoebe was one of nine children born to Mrs. Mary Louise McClanahan and the late Lawrence David McClanahan, Sr. of Pulaski. She is survive by her loving husband of 17 years Dallas Wiley; one son, Leroy Bryson, Jr. of Shawsville; and preceded in death by her daughter Lucy Regina Bryson Motley. She is also survived by one brother, James Richard McClanahan, Pulaski; four sisters, Lillian Lindsey, Radford; Lucy McClanahan and Fannie McClanahan, Pulaski; Mary Alice Reeves, Christiansburg; two grandsons, one granddaughter. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, May 28 at 2 p.m. at Shawsville Baptist Church, Shawsville with the Rev. Erdie Trigg officiating. Interment will follow in the Shawsville Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Tuesday from 7 to 8 p.m. at the church. Hamlar-Curtis Funeral Home, Roanoke is in charge of arrangements.

Jack Wesley Williams, age 69 of Dublin, passed away Thursday, June 26, 2003 at the New River Valley Medical Center. He was a retired employee of RAAP. He attended the Dublin Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his wife, Janet H. Williams. Survivors include two daughters, Debbie Marion, Cindy Lilly, both of Dublin; two sons, Tim Williams of Roanoke, Mike Williams of Knoxville, Tenn.; mother, Audrey Vaughan Williams of Greenville, TN; two brothers, Gerald S. Williams of Radford, Don Williams of Greenville, Tenn.; one sister, Jewell Cuba of New Castle, PA.; 8 grandchildren; 8 great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held today Sunday, June 29, 2003 at 2 p.m. at the Dublin Baptist Church with Dr. David Hoagland officiating. Interment will follow in Thornspring Cemetery in Pulaski County. The family received friends from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Saturday at the Mullins Funeral Home in Radford.

Cheryl Lynn Manuel Williams formerly of Pulaski passed away Monday, May 26, 2003 in Statesville, N. C. Cheryl Lynn was born in Pulaski, Va. on Jan. 26, 1972. She resided at 147 Waterfall Lane, Olin, N.C. Surviving are her husband, Mitchell Williams of Olin, N. C.; son, Jacob Matthew Williams and daughter, Ivy Grey Williams of Olin, N.C.; parents, Patrick and Carolyn Manuel Gilchrist and Raymond Rice all of Pulaski. Also surviving are honorary sister, Wendy Waddell and honorary mother, Linda Waddell Stoots of Pulaski; stepsister and brother, Margaret Thornton of Hampton, Va. and Scott Gilchrist of Rodgersville, Pa. Cheryl Lynn also leaves behind a multitude of aunts, uncles, nephews, cousins and friends, also the staff and faculty of Union Grove Elementary School, Union Grove, N. C. Cheryl Lynn was a loving mother and friend and will be missed by many. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. from Stevens Funeral Chapel, Pulaski with Rev. Don Sizemore officiating. Burial will follow in Oakwood Cemetery, Pulaski. Visiting will be Friday evening at Stevens Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m., come as you are. WILLIAMS, Charlie Guy, 86, of Narrows, died Monday, December 24, 2001, in the Springfield Nursing Home at Lindside, W.Va. He was born in Giles County on March 15, 1915, and was the son of the late James Charlie and Hatty Harmon Williams. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Nettie Blankenship Williams, two sons, Robert Williams Lacy Perdue and a brother, Kale Williams. He was formerly employed at the Radford A.A.R.P. Plant at Radford, Va., and retired painter at the Celanese Plant at Narrows and was a veteran of World War II. He is survived by three daughters, Illene W. McKinney, Narrows, Eva Candler and her husband, Robert, Wanda Meredith, all of Narrows, and a foster son, Leon Meredith, Pearisburg; two daughters-in-law, Barbara Perdue and Jenetta Williams, both of Narrows; twelve grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Friday, December 28, 2001, at 11 a.m. in the Chapel of Riffe's Funeral Service in Narrows with the Rev. Jim Hagy officiating. Burial will follow in Birchlawn Burial Park, Pearisburg, with graveside rites conducted by the American Legion Post #68 of Narrows and Post #311, Pembroke and V.F.W. Post #6000, Narrows. The family will receive friends at Riffe in Narrows Thursday from 5 to 8 p.m.

WILLIAMS, Myrtle May, 89, of Eggleston, died peacefully at her home Saturday morning, January 24, 1998, in the loving care of her family. Born at Mt. Lake in Giles County on November 16, 1908, she was a daughter of the late Dave and Allie Williams Collins. She was a retired employee of Celanese Celco Plant and attended the Eggleston United Methodist Church. She was the wife of the late Russell Landon Williams. Surviving are her daughter, Estelle W. Falls of Eggleston; two granddaughters, Brenda (Mrs. Ronald) Perdue of Pearisburg and Juanita (Mrs. Dave) Sweeney of Eggleston; a great-granddaughter, Mary Sweeney of Eggleston; a great-grandson, Donald Whittaker of Eggleston; and a sister, Cora Belle Kirby of Salem. Graveside services will be conducted Tuesday, January 27, 1998 at 2 p.m. in Birchlawn Abbey in Pearisburg. The family will receive friends at the Kendall Funeral Home in Pembroke Monday evening from 6 to 7:30 p.m. and other times at the home in Eggleston. The Kendall Funeral Home at 605 Snidow St., Pembroke, is in charge of arrangements.

Tony Rogers, 53, of Kings Mountain, N.C., died at home on Thursday, July 17, 2003. Williams was born Sept. 7, 1949 to Curtis Bennett and Maggie Vaughn Williams who preceded him in death. He was a native of Pulaski County, a U.S. Navy veteran, and master electrician. He retired as vice president of Recore in 2002. He is survived by his wife, Alene Coleman Williams of the home; stepdaughter, Terry Meeks of Kings Mountain; brothers, J.B. Williams of Pulaski, Jerry L. Williams of Newport News, and Curtis J. Williams of Bessemer City; sisters, Barbara Ann Larsen of Rockwood, Tenn., Marjorie Dodd of Gastonia, N.C., Hilda Williams of Marion, Mary Y. Davis of Republic, Mich., Ester C. Rupe of Bethpage, Tenn; and two grandchildren. Visitation was held before a 6 p.m. funeral service Saturday, July 19, at Greene's West Chapel, in Gastonia. The family asked that memorial contributions be sent to Mt. Olivet Methodist Church. Arrangements by Greene Funeral Service -West Chapel.

Woodrow Ralph Wilson, 85 of Belspring, passed away Sunday, June 8, 2003 at the New River Valley Medical Center. He was a retired foreman at the R. A. A. P. with 35 years of service. He was a U. S. Army veteran having fought in Germany during WWII, and was a member of VFW Post #776. He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Arthur M. and Maddie R. Grubb Wilson, a stepmother, Dora Wilson, a son, Jack Leon "Buff" Wilson, a grandson, Daniel Taylor, 6 brothers, Lawrence, Robert, Clinton, Bryan, Blair and Hick Wilson, 3 sisters, Leoda Bradley, Blanche Edwards and Leoda Everstine. Survivors include his wife, Edith Morris Wilson of Belspring; three stepsons, Marvin Taylor, Gary Taylor, and Randy Taylor, all of Allisonia; four step-grandchildren ; 5 sisters, Goldie Medley, Hilda Hegl, and Ella Hardesty all of MD, Opal Good of California, and Jean King of Florida. Cryptside services will be held Wednesday, June 11, 2003 at 2:00 p.m. at the Highland Memory Gardens Mausoleum in Dublin with Rev. Rupert Quesenberry officiating where members of VFW Post #776 will conduct military cryptside rites. The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Tuesday at the Mullins Funeral Home in Radford.

WILSON, Berniece Jessee, 80, of Pulaski, Va., beloved mother, sister, wife and business lady, went to be with her Lord and Savior Monday, February 17, 2003. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ray William Wilson, her father and mother, William Kent and Minerva Jesse, all of Pulaski, Va., and by one brother, Earnest Dewey Jessee of Big Stone Gap, Va. Mr. and Mrs. Wilson owned and operated the Virginia Feed Store for more than 30 years, in Pulaski. They also owned Wilson Apartments. Surviving are brothers and sisters-in-law, D. W. and Virginia Jessee, Yakima, Wash., Gaylord and Sarah Jessee, Lewisville, N.C., Carl and Shirley Jessee, Pulaski, Va.; sister and brother-in-law, Margaret Suzanne and Jesse Marcum, Ormond Beach, Fla.; several beloved nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 8 p.m. from Stevens Funeral Chapel, Pulaski with Pastor Randy Winn officiating. Visiting will be Thursday evening from Stevens Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 6 p.m. until the service hour. A graveside service will be held Friday at 10 a.m. from Sunset Cemetery, Christiansburg, Va. Arrangements by Stevens Funeral Home, Inc., Pulaski, Va.
