home to be with her Lord on Monday, March 26, 2001 from Montgomery Regional
Hospital in Blacksburg. Born in Giles County on April 24, 1923, she was a
daughter of the late Rufus and Laticia Mullins Blankenship. She was a member
of the First Christian Church of Newport and was preceded in death by her
husbands, William F. Shrader and L.W. Bill Stanke. Surviving are three sons,
Eugene Franklin Shrader of Pembroke, James Richard Shrader of Norristown,
Pa. and Darrell Wayne Shrader of Christiansburg; four daughters, Geraldine
Vanhoozier of Christiansburg, Bonnie Beasley of Newport, Carolyn Williams of
Newport, and Beverly Williams of Pembroke; one sister, Lula B. Fleeman of
Narrows; fourteen grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; a special
nephew, Stanley Blankenship of Narrows. Funeral services will be conducted
11a.m. Thursday, March 29, 2001 in the Kendall Funeral Home at 605 Snidow
Street in Pembroke with Pastor Roger Henderson officiating. Burial will
follow in the Shrader Cemetery in Clover Hollow at Newport. The family will
receive friends at the funeral home Wednesday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. In

STANTON, Howard Burton Jr., 72, of Christiansburg, passed away Thursday, April 12, 2001. He graduated from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University and the Medical College of Virginia. He served in the U.S. Air Force as a First Liutenant. Mr. Stanton practiced dentistry in Christiansburg for 38 years, also serving as team dentist for the Virginia Tech Football Team for 20 years. He volunteered with various civic organizations including the C.H.S. Demon Booster, was a past director of the Bank of Christiansburg and past Chairman of the Board of Montgomery County Hospital. Surviving are his wife, Velma Jo Clingenpeel Stanton; a daughter, Emily Woodbury Stanton, Pilot; a son, Howard Burton Stanton, III, Herndon; a brother and sister-in-law, David Robert and Valerie Stanton, Jr., Diane and Dan Tolley and their children, Patrick Clingenpeel; brother-in-law, Glenn Lloyd and Judy Richardson Clingenpeel, Richard Bowman Clingenpeel; his father-in-law, Lloyd M. Robley Reaumur (Chick) Stearnes, of Salem, died Tuesday, April 22, 2003. He was born August 27, 1913, in Dublin, Va. He was preceded in death by his parents, Dr. James Daniel Stearnes and Bessie Hardwicke Thompson Stearnes of Dublin, Va. and his wife of 55 years, Katherine Vinson Stearnes and all siblings. He was the grandson of the late Captain Alonzo Cecil Hardwicke and Susan Wilson Hardwicke of Montgomery County, Va. and Dr. John Lewis Stearnes and Phoebe McDermed Stearnes of Dublin and Salem, Va. He retired in 1978 from the Virginia Department of Transportation with over 40 years of service. He was also a retired U.S. Army Sergeant 1ST Class, World War II veteran having served in Panama-China-Burma-India Theater, U.S.A. and 80TH Division Training Reserve, Salem, member of the American Legion, Salem, Va. He was a life member of NACCCA and NARCE. In addition, he was a 32ND Scottish Rite Mason and Past Master of Taylor Lodge #23, A.F.&A.M., and received his 50-year pin last year. He was a proud member of the Boy Scouts of America and was certified an Eagle Scout November 28, 1929. He was a charter member of the Dublin Presbyterian Church and an active member of the First United Methodist Church in Salem since May 24, 1953. He loved the game of baseball and supported the farm clubs in Salem since 1950, and was able to attend the opening game for the 2003 Salem Avalanche season. Surviving are his daughter, Linda Stearnes Chambers of Salem; nephews, Albert Friedel, Jr. of Cincinnati, Ohio, Walter Wyrick, Jr. of Tacoma, Wash.; a niece, Fary Wyrick Anderson of Kent, Ohio; also special cousins, Janie Hardwicke of Dublin, Va. and Bill Senter of Salem, Va.; and a lifelong friend, Sydney Davie of Dublin, Va. Funeral was held Friday, April 25, 2003, 2 p.m., at the First United Methodist Church with Rev. Bobby Pickle officiating. Masonic graveside services were given by Taylor Lodge #23 A.F.&A.M. with interment in Sherwood Burial Park. The family received friends at the John M. He was born in Wythe County on Jan. 31, 1940 and was the son of the late George Steele and Mattie Stroupe Steele. He was a former employee of Pulaski Furniture and was retired from AT&T in Fairlawn. Mrs. Mary Trolinger Steger 86, of 1600 Westbrook Ave., Richmond, formerly of Pulaski, died Friday morning in a Richmond hospital.
Born in Pulaski, Jan. 31, 1897, she was the daughter of the late Henry Lewis Trofinger and Willie Jordan Trolinger. She was preceded in death by her husband, Hubert Watts Steger.
Surviving are one step-son, H. Watts Steger Jr., Pulaski; a brother, James T. Trolinger, Richmond, and nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be Monday at 11 a.m. from the First United Methodist, Church with the Rev. J.N. Howard and Rev. Tom Seay officiating.
Burial will follow in the Oakwood Cemetery.
Visiting will be today at Stevens Funeral Home with the family receiving friends from 7 to 9 p.m.

Anne FitzSimons Stickley died on September 18, 2002 at the Kroontje Health Care Center in Blacksburg, Virginia after a 20-year battle with rheumatoid arthritis. She was born on June 1, 1928 in Charleston, South Carolina. She is preceded in death by her parents Theodore and Clara FitzSimons, her sister Clara Mather FitzSimons, and her brothers Theodore Barker FitzSimons and William Huger FitzSimons. She is survived by her ex-husband Dr. William Sproul Stickley, her sister Amy Grainger, her sons, Robert FitzSimons Stickley MD and Edward Lee Stickley, her daughter Regina Faith Stickley, her granddaughters, Anna Lorraine Harrison and Kimberly Stickley, her grandsons Robert Smallridge Stickley and Samuel FitzSimons Stickley and her great granddaughter Emma Lillian Harrison as well as nieces and nephews who were very special to her, especially Jennifer FitzSimons. She cherished her close friendship with Miwaka Haley.
Her career began as a RN, graduating from St. Joseph's Hospital School of Nursing in 1949. Anne enjoyed nursing and believed in the close and attentive care that she provided for her patients. She then completed further training at Bowman Gray School of Medicine to become a nurse anesthetist. She married Dr. William S. Stickley in 1956 subsequently lived overseas in Athens, Greece for two years, making several trips to the Greek islands and to Egypt. She spent the remainder of her life in the Winchester and Strasburg area with much of her time devoted to the renovation and maintenance of her home at Frye Fort. She continued to live in Coal Mine Hollow on Cedar Creek near Strasburg, Virginia, moving to Radford to live near her son.
To her family and friends, Anne is remembered as a woman with many talents. She mastered scuba diving and later went on to obtain her pilot's license. She was an excellent seamstress and made most of her own clothing. She enjoyed entertaining and preparing gourmet foods - everyone remembers the eclairs! She enjoyed woodworking, landscaping, planting and constructing stone walls at Frye Fort on Cedar Creek. Her strong personality always let those around her know exactly where they stood. She played mahjong regularly with friends until back pain prevented her from enjoying social activities. She was an avid reader. After taking a course in journalism at Shenandoah University, she had a short story accepted for publication in the Southern Crescent Review, an accomplishment of which she was quite proud.
There will be a gathering of her friends and relatives at the Hotel Strasburg in Strasburg, Virginia on Saturday, October 26, 2002 from 3:00 to 5:00 PM to share memories and photos. In lieu of flowers, any one wishing to make a donation in her name should send it to the Arthritis Foundation, 1330 West Peachtree Street, Atlanta, GA 30309. She will be remembered with love and respect.

Jack Thomas Stilwell, 74, of 1094 Stilwell Road, Draper, passed away Friday, June 6, 2003 at the Lewis-Gale Hospital, Salem. Born Oct. 18, 1928 in Pulaski county, Virginia, he was the son of the late Joseph Austin Stilwell and Lima Edith Manning Stilwell. His sister, Bertie Opal Stilwell, also preceded him in death. He was retired from the Pulaski County Public Service Authority with 15 years of experience. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Jennie Lou Gravely Stilwell; sons, Jackie Lee Stilwell, Lucas Temple Stilwell, and Thomas Stillwell, all of Draper; five grandchildren, and six great grandchildren; and one sister, Geneva Phibbs of Shady Springs, W.Va. Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday at 2 p.m. at the Bower Funeral Chapel, Pulaski, with Rev. Dale Akers and Rev. Earnest Chinault officiating. Interment will follow at the Memorial Christian Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends Monday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at Bower Funeral Chapel, Pulaski. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Ada Warner Strupe, his second wife, Virginia Carbaugh Strupe, and a sister, Inez Strupe Nelson. Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Sylvia "Sibby" and Doug McPeake of Radford, and Rebecca "Becky" and Dean Widener of Richlands; five grandsons and their families, Gregory Widener and his wife, Tammy, and their children, Brandon and Amanda, all of Wise, Timothy McPeake and his wife, Janet, and their children, Lauren and Erin, all of Dublin, Bruce Widener, and his wife, Joie, and their children, Justin and Kayla, all of Smith Mountain. Also surviving are long-time faithful friends Sherman, Sam and Sid Smith of Blacksburg. Mr. Strupe was a member of Fairlawn Presbyterian Church. He graciously donated his body to science. A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. at the Fairlawn Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Terry Woodard officiating. The family will receive friends in the church fellowship hall from 1 p.m. until the time of the service. Memorials may be made to the Fairlawn Volunteer Fire Dept., 7358 Pepper Ferry Blvd., Radford, VA 24141. Mullins Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
