Mrs. Susie MANUEL BOWMAN, 70, Route No. 1, Dublin, died early this morning at Radford Hospital.
She was born in Wythe County Feb. 27, 1892, daughter of the late John S. and Sarah HOLLIDAY MANUEL.
Survivors are her husband, John R. BOWMAN, five daughters, Mrs. Clayton BRATTON, Cleveland, Ohio; Mrs. Dan WEBB, Pulaski; Mrs. Robert HANGER, Mrs. Helen BUCKNER, Mrs. Val EARLE and Mrs. Dorothy FRENCH all of Charlotte, N.C.; three sons, John H. BOWMAN, Staunton; Robert BOWMAN, Alexandria and Joseph RATCLIFF, Radford; one sister, Mrs. Frank SAWYERS, Ivanhoe; 13 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
The funeral service will be held Saturday at 3 p.m. from the home conducted by the Rev. Sam Barnes. Burial will be in Oakwood.
The body will be removed from Strickler’s Funeral Home this afternoon to the residence to remain until the hour of the service.

The funeral is announced to take place Wednesday morning at eleven o’clock from the Presbyterian church. The burial service will conducted by Henry Clay Lodge No. 280. of which he was a member, burial to be in Dublin cemetery.

Funeral services for Thomas Jefferson BRALLEY, 88, who died Friday night at the Veterans Administration Hospital, Salem, will be held today at 2:30 p.m. at the Aldersgate Methodist Church with the pastor, Rev. Neil McKinnon, officiating. Interment will be in Dora Cemetery.
Born in Wythe County, the son of Mitchell BRALLEY and Martha PUCKETT BRALLEY. He is survived by one son, J.J. BRALLEY, Durham, N.C.; three daughters, Mrs. Troah CAMPBELL, Whitesburg, Ky.; Mrs. Forrest HORTON and Mrs. James STALLINGS, both of Pulaski; one stepdaughter, Mrs. Robert FANNING, Pulaski; also 13 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
The body will remain at Thomas M. Seagle & Sons Funeral Home until one hour before services when it will be taken to the church.

Buford Charlie Bratton, age 91, of Dublin, passed away Friday, May 23, 2003 in the Highland Ridge Rehab Center. He was born in Wythe County, Mar. 1, 1912, son of the late James and Minnie Sue Roope Bratton. He was preceded in death by his wife, Luvina “Lou” Reynolds Bratton, daughters, Betty Martin and Nancy Dunford, several sisters and brothers. He is survived by his son, Bobby Gene Bratton, Dublin; three daughters, Linda Bratton, Draper, Shirley Ann Taylor, Rita Sue Coleman, both of Pulaski; five sisters, Virginia DeHart, Martha Eads, Bonnie Wiseman, Stella Wright, all of Pulaski, Colleen Lucian, Dublin; three brothers, Brown Bratton, Robbie Bratton , both of Radford, Junior Bratton, Staunton; several grandchildren, great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Sunday, May 25 at 3 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Chapel with the Rev. John Boyd officiating. Interment will follow in the Duncan Cemetery in Draper. The family will receive friends at the Barnett Funeral Home from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday. Barnett Funeral Home, Wytheville, Va. is in charge of arrangements.

Roxie Bayse Brewer, age 80, of Radford, died Thursday May 1, 2003 in a Roanoke Hospital. She was a member of the Radford Wesleyan Church, and a former employee of Kenrose Manufacturing Co., and was a retired employee of Radford University. She was an avid Radford High School Sports Fan. She was preceded in death by her husband, “Granddaddy Bobcat” William Peyton Brewer, Sr. Surviving are a daughter, Betty B. Dickerson, Christiansburg; two sons, William P. Brewer, Jr., Pulaski and C. Thomas Brewer, Roanoke; brother, Jack Bayse, Foster Falls; three sisters, Nellie Mae Neese, Pulaski, Elizabeth Riggins, Salem and Ruth Martin, Pearisburg; sister-in-law, Irma Bayse, Roanoke; and an adopted son and brother, Jeff Sandoe, Draper; eight grandchildren; eight great grandchildren also survive. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday May 4, at The DeVilbiss Funeral Chapel with Rev. Jim Cochran officiating. Interment will follow in Highland Memory Gardens. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to The Radford Wesleyan Church or the Radford High School Athletic Department. BROWN, James Arthur, (Jim), 71, of 5974 Collier Street in Dublin and formerly of Giles County, died Monday morning, December 24, 2001, at Pulaski Community Hospital in Pulaski. Born in Smyth County on December 19, 1930, he was a son of the late Joseph Henry and Annie Harold Brown. Jim was retired from AT&T and had been employed with National Gypsum Co. at the Goldbond Plant. He was preceded in death by a son, Jerry Wayne Brown, two grandsons, James Ellis Banes and Joseph Nelson Banes, and three brothers, Reginald, Wade, and Wells Brown. Surviving are his wife, Cardella Manning Brown; two sons, Ronnie L. Brown of Narrows, David Allen Brown of Pulaski; six daughters, Judy Hamblin of Troy, N.Y., Barbara Kessinger of Big Stony Creek Community in Giles County, Debbie Zirbel of Hurricane, W.Va., Carol D. Brown and Julie J. Brown, both of Dublin, Jannie Banes of Poplar Camp; two brothers, Bill Brown of Texas, Bobby Brown of Richmond; five sisters, Ruth Venable of Kentucky, Eleanor McNew of Tennessee, Sharon Lynn and Joann Brown, both of Mechanicsville, Elizabeth Trainham of Tennessee; thirteen grandchildren; fourteen great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, December 27 at 11 a.m. in the Kendall Funeral Home at 605 Snidow Street in Pembroke with Pastor Eddie Kendall officiating. Burial will follow in Birchlawn Burial Park in Pearisburg. The family will receive at the funeral home Wednesday evening from 6 to 8 p.m.

Dorrence Chumbley Brown, 84, of Stanleytown Health Care Center, Bassett, and formerly of Pulaski, died Friday, Oct. 25. 2002, at the center.
She was born in Montgomery County, April 8, 1915, to Henry Clay Chumbley and Willie Mae Chumbley, both deceased. Her husband of 58 years, Judge Robert I. Brown, also preceded her in death as did three sisters, Virginia C. Hauser, Etta May Sturgill and Blanch C. Shiflett, and two brothers, W. David Chumbley and Henry Merle Chumbley.
Until 1988 when she retired, she worked as a legal secretary for her husband. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Pulaski and in her later years, she and her husband attended the Pulaski Presbyterian Church in America. Well-known for her musical ability, she played with several groups. She also had her own radio program at one time.
Surviving are one daughter, Nancy B. McGhee of Collinsville; one son, Robert C. Brown of Stafford; one sister, Mary Helen Amy Goins; five grandchildren; three step grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and one step-great-grandchild.
The graveside service will be 11 a.m. Monday at Sunset Cemetery in Christiansburg with Dr. Rob Edwards officiating.
Visitation will be 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. today at Norris Funeral Services and Crematory and at other times at the home of Nancy McGhee, 80 Woodshire Road, Collinsville.
Memorials may be made to Bassett Rescue Squad, 8714 Fairystone Park Highway, Bassett, Va. 24055 or to Stanleytown Health Care Center Patient Activity Fund, 240 Riverside Drive, Bassett, Va. 24055.

Stella Frances Brown, 94, of Belspring, died Tuesday, April 22, 2003. She was a lifelong member of the Belspring Presbyterian Church and was a teacher with Radford City Schools with 44 years of service. She was preceded in death by three brothers and a sister. Survivors include two nieces and spouses, Susie and Michael Etling of Westerville, Ohio, and Nancy and Dale McGhee of Collinsville; two nephews and spouses, Michael and Amy Brown of Lawrenceville and Robert C. and Sonita Brown of Stafford; seven great nephews, three great nieces, 2 great great nephews and one great great niece. A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 26, 2003, at Belspring Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Amy Lear officiating. Burial will follow in the Brown Cemetery in Belspring. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Presbyterian Children's Home of the Highlands, P.O. Box 545, Wytheville, VA 24382.
