CARDEN, PAUL DUDLEY, 78, of Christiansburg passed away Saturday, December
21, 2002 in the V.A. Medical Center, Salem. He is survived by the mother of
the children, Ruby Carden Hooper; children, Gary Crowder, Springfield, VA,
Dennis and Patty Carden, Parrott, VA, David Carden, Terri Davis Graham and
Eddie Graham, all of Dublin, VA; one sister, Lee McGinnis of Richmond,
Kentucky; special friend, Margaret DeHart; ten grandchildren and one
step-great-grandchild. The family will receive friends from 1 p.m. until 2
p.m. Monday at the Horne Funeral Home. Funeral services will be 2 p.m.
Monday, Dec. 23, at the graveside in Roselawn Memorial Gardens conducted by
Rev. T. Michael Bond. Arrangement are being handled by Horne Funeral &
Cremation Service, Christiansburg, Va. (382-2612)

CARDEN, Alfred Graton, (Al), 72, of 317 Maple Street, Dublin, died Sunday
morning, January 14, 2001 in the Community Hospital of the Roanoke Valley.
He was born in Parrott on June 28, 1928 and was the son of the late James
Stern Carden and Emma Collins Carden. He was a retired employee of Lynchburg
Foundry having 37 years of service. He was a member of the Dublin United
Methodist Church and a member of the Thornspring Golf Club. Surviving are
his wife, Sue Brillheart Carden, Dublin; daughters and son-in-law, Sarah
Spence, Grand Rapids, Michigan, Amy and Luke Rooks of Hawaii; sons and
daughters-in-law, Nick and Juliet Carden, Leesburg, Georgia, Tony and Paula
Carden, Evans, Georgia; sisters, Zelma McGinnis, Parrott, Euva Lee McGinnis,
Richmond, Kentucky; brother, Paul Carden, Roanoke; grandchildren,
Christopher Scott, Jesse Scott, Andrew Spence, Gray Carden, Joshua Carden,
Jacob Carden and Hannah Rooks. Funeral service will be held Thursday at 11
a.m. from Stevens Funeral Chapel with Rev. Richard Patterson officiating.
Burial will follow in the Highland Memory Gardens, Dublin. Visiting will be
Wednesday evening from the funeral home where the family will receive
friends from 6 until 8 p.m. The family wishes that memorials may be made to
the Dublin United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 577, Dublin, Virginia 24084.

Rev. Wilma Stoneman Carnell, 87, of Pulaski, Va. died Sunday, June 29, 2003, in the Pulaski Community Hospital. She was born in Carroll Co., Va. on Dec. 28, 1915 and was the daughter of the late Sidney Stoneman and Mary Webb Stoneman. She was a retired minister and was a member of the Stafford Hill Pentecostal Holiness Church, Pulaski. She was also preceded in death by her husbands, Henry Carnell and George Ratcliffe, and by a son and daughter-in-law, Charlie and Frankie Ratcliffe. Surviving are: son and daughter-in-law, David and Violet Ratcliffe, St. George, Utah; granddaughter, Denise (Dee) Smith, Pulaski; three great-grandchildren, William Radcliff, Sabrina Radcliff, David Radcliff; one great-great-grandchild, Madison Radcliff. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. from Stevens Funeral Chapel with Rev. Hampton Atkinson and Tim Steed officiating. Burial will follow in Shiloh Cemetery, Pulaski County. Visiting will be Wednesday evening at Stevens Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m In lieu of flowers the family wishes that memorials be made to the Stafford Hill Pentecostal Holiness Church. The family will be meeting at the residence of the granddaughter, Denise (Dee) Smith, 1417 Grove Drive, Pulaski. Arrangements by Stevens Funeral Home, Inc., Pulaski.

CARP, Mrs. Shirley Lenett, 80, of Wytheville, Va., died on Saturday, April 12, 2003 at Asbury Place, Wytheville, Va.
CARP, Mrs. Shirley Lenett, 80, of Wytheville, Va., died on Saturday, April 12, 2003 at Asbury Place, Wytheville, Va. Born on March 21, 1923 in Bluefield, W.Va., Shirley resided in Wytheville, Va. for the past 56 years. Shirley was co-owner, with her husband, of Carp's Department Store in Wytheville for 35 years; and was an active volunteer in local charities and a member of Congregation Ahavath Shalom in Bluefield, W.Va. She is survived by her husband of 56 years, Carl; her son and daughter-in-law, Dan and Linda Carp of Rochester, New York; her daughter and son-in-law, Kay and Cliff Williams of New Orleans, La. She is also survived by her brother and sister-in-law, Sidney and Jean Lenett of Wytheville and was predeceased by her brother, Marvin Lenett of Pulaski. Also surviving are her five grandchildren. Visitation will be on Monday, April 14, 2003 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Home in Wytheville. Graveside services will be conducted by Rabbi Beth Jacowitz on Tuesday, April 15, 2003 at 11 a.m. at the Monte Vista Cemetery in Bluefield, W.Va. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that contributions be made to a charity of your choice. The funeral procession to Monte Vista Cemetery will leave Barnett Funeral Home at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday. Barnett Funeral Home, Wytheville, Va. is in charge of arrangements.

Surviving are one son Walter H. CARPER of Richmond and one sister, Mrs. Frank J. BELL of Pulaski.

Funeral service will be held today at 4 p. m. for W. Chaffin "Ted" CARPER, 69, at Oakley's Chapel, Roanoke, conducted by Rev. James W. Lippincott. Burial will follow in Evergreen Cemetery, Roanoke.

Mr. CARPER died Saturday in Roanoke hospital. He was a brother of I. R. CARPER and Mrs. Myrtle HAWKINS, Pulaski. The deceased was a retired employee of the Appalachian Power Co.

Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Pearl RADCLIFF CARPER; one son Ralph C. CARPER, Richmond; three daughters, Mrs. Melvin B. JOHNSON, Richmond; Mrs. Luke C. SMITH, Norfolk and Mrs. Harless H. SCOTT, Roanoke; one brother and one sister, Mr. CARPER and Mrs. HAWKINS, Pulaski and seven grandchildren.

Radford, Va. on July 19, 1915 to the late Samuel Stewart and Essie Pettus.
Surviving are a daughter, Faye Carr Brown of Radford, Va.; a son, Henry
Stewart Carr of Alexandria, Va., a brother, Samuel Stewart, Jr. of Radford,
Va.; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren. Funeral service will be
held 11 a.m. Thursday, January 11, 2001 at Zion Hill Baptist Church with
Rev. N. T. Perkins officiating. Burial will be in Sunrise Memorial Gardens.

Mary Sue Hughes Carroll, 54, of Radford passed away Wednesday, May 28th, 2003 at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital. Born April 30th, 1949 in Narrows, she was the daughter of the late Allen Mason and Martha Bruce Hale Burton. She is survived by one son, Stephen Hughes of Radford; two daughters, Beth Shelton and her husband Jeff of Radford, and Jessica Carroll of Radford; two brother, James Burton of Narrows and William Bradley Burton of Narrows; two sisters, Fay and John Conley of Narrows and Brenda and Jim Clark of Narrows; two grandchildren, Stacie and Samantha Shelton of Radford; several nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews; and four special friends, Bobby Nester, Ellis Martin, Ellen Bolling, and Lisa Smith, all of Radford. Funeral services will be held Saturday, May 31st, 2003 at 11 AM in the Chapel of Riffe's Funeral Service in Narrows with R. Kellis McClaugherty,Minister,officiating. Miss Sarah Emeline CARSON, 75 of 131 Fifth Street NW Pulaski, died early this morning in Lewis Gale Hospital in Salem.
She was a retired employee of C&P Telephone Company and a member of the First United Methodist Church in Pulaski and Pioneers of America, Old Dominion Chapter.
She is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Virginia C. MOREHEAD of Pulaski and Mrs. Leonard W. BENNETT of Roanoke, and on half sister, Mrs. E. G. RICHARDSON of Bristol.
The funeral will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. at Stevens Funeral Chapel with the Reverend James HANKINS officiating. Burial will follow in Oakwood Cemetery.
The family will recieve friends at Stevens Funeral Home in Pulaski from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday.

Mrs. Carson was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Daniel Carson. She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Jane and Richard Britt of Franklin, Va.; a son and daughter-in-law, Dan and Sandy Carson of Richmond; five grandchildren, Ashley and Carson Britt, and Rob, Hunter, and Anne Carrington Carson; one great-grandchild, Quinn Carson. CARTER, Mamie E., 98, of Pearisburg, departed this life on Saturday,
December 16, 2000, at the New River Valley Medical Center after a long
illness. She was born December 19, 1902, in Columbia, South Carolina, the
daughter of the late Rev. Isom Goodwyn and Selena Benson Goodwyn. She was
preceded in death by her husband, the late Russell Carter, Sr., and one son,
Bernard Carter, six brothers, and two sisters. She was a faithful member of
the First Baptist Church, Pearisburg, where she served as the former
President of the Missionary Society and former member of the Senior Choir.
She was also a member of the Heroines of Jericho York Masons, (Order of the
Eastern Star). Mrs. Carter was also a former employee of the Appalachian
Power Company. She leaves to cherish her memory one son, Russell (Carmen)
Carter, Jr., of San Antonio, Texas; two daughters, Thelma Harris of
Columbus, Ohio, and Catherine (Robert) Alexander of Pearisburg; 15
grandchildren, and a host of great-grandchildren, nephews, nieces, other
relatives and friends. Funeral services will be Thursday, December 21, 2000,
at the First Baptist Church Pearisburg with the Rev. Michael Braton
officiating. Burial will be at the Birchlawn Cemetery, Pearisburg. The
family will receive friends Thursday from 12 noon until 1 p.m., time of
service at the church. Penn's Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

CARTER, Winfred William, Jr., (Cooter) 40, or Valley View Drive, Dublin, died Thursday afternoon August 14, 2003 at the University of Virginia Hospital in Charlottesville from injuries received in an auto accident in July. Born on March 23, 1963 in Martinsville, he was a 1981 graduate of Pulaski County High School and was employed by Volvo in Dublin. Cooter was an avid Nascar fan and enjoyed watching the late Dale Earnhart. He was preceded in death by his father, Winifred W. Carter, Sr.; one son, Joshua Nicholas Carter, one brother; grandparents, John and Thelma Carter; father and mother-in-law, William and Gladys Swinney. Survivors include his wife, Tammy Swinney Carter; mother and stepfather, Bonita and George Taylor of Radford; sons, Michael and Matthew Carter of the home; stepson, Josh Swinney and wife Charity of Dublin; stepdaughters, Casey and Erin Swinney of the home; grandson, Gavin Swinney of Dublin; brother, Chris Carter and wife Etta of Snowville; sister, Sherri Dickens and husband Barry of Max Meadows. In honoring Cooter's wishes his body was cremated and a memorial service will be held on Monday, August 18, 2003 at 6 p.m. at the Kendall Funeral Home, 605 Snidow Street, Pembroke, with minister G.E. Strike officiating. Charles Edward Cartwright, age 77, of Pulaski passed away Tuesday morning June 3, 2003 at the Virginia Veterans Nursing Care Center, Salem. Born February 23, 1926 in Hickory, Va. he was the son of the late Lowry Calvin Cartwright and Mattie Mae Richardson Cartwright. His wife, Helen Nancy Wright Wooten Cartwright and two brothers, Lester Cartwright and L. C. Cartwright, also preceded him in death. He was retired from Pulaski Furniture Corporation. Mr. Cartwright was a veteran of the United States Army, having served in World War II. Surviving are: his daughter, Leona Williamson, Virginia Beach, Va.; grandson, John Hall Williamson III, Virginia Beach; sister, Hazel Denny, Chesapeake, Va.; brother, Milwood Cartwright, Northwest, Va. Funeral services will be held Friday 2 p.m. at the Bower Funeral Chapel, Pulaski with Rev. Donald B. Peters of the Christiansburg Church of the Brethren, officiating. Interment will follow in the Draper Valley Pentecostal Holiness Church Cemetery, Draper’s Valley. The family will receive friends from 1 p.m. until time of service at the Bower Funeral Chapel, 1631 Bobwhite Blvd., Pulaski. Bower Funeral Chapel, Pulaski is handling the arrangements.
