A SW Times Editorial
February 12, 1974
Tom COMBITHS was a very special kind of person. In an era that has become impersonal, he remained the Southern gentleman.
In an age where family ties are breaking down his, remained strong.
In a business world where the premium is or aggressiveness, he was patient and understanding
Tom COMBITHSs was particularly special to this newspaper in that his mother, Dess COMBITHS, is the woman's editor.
Thus it was that Tom drove his mother to and from work six days a week-becoming a familiar face at The Times office and a friend to those who were even the most casual acquaintances.
It was a combination of his personal warmth and knowledge that took him to the top in many fields I . In life insurance sales, he was one of the very best in the country.
Civic affairs found him in such roles as Boy Scout leader, president of the Rotary Club, and vice-president of the Chamber of Commerce.
He was a graduate of one of the best schools in the east, Rutgers University, and gained the rank of Lieutenant in the U.S. Navy.
A footballer in his school and college days, he became an avid skier in later years - and again, he excelled.
But his achievements aside, Tom COMBITHS will be remembered even more as a good citizen an good friend.
A very special kind of person.
