Visit Notre Dame of Bayeux

Bayeux Notre Dame Cathedral

Open daily: 10 am to noon and 2 pm to 5:30 pm.

Evening hours: Tuesday, Thursday & Saturday, 8:30 pm to 10:30 pm.

Frequent choral and organ performances offered. Check http://www.notredamedubessin.org.

After visiting the market, continue your orientation walk-about.

  • Retrace your steps toward rue Larcher, walking back along rue Saint-Patrice until it becomes rue Saint-Malo, then rue Saint-Martin.

  • Turn right on rue Larcher before you reach the bridge, to reach the Bayeux Notre Dame Cathedral.

The narrow street will open up as you continue along. Look right to spot the Merry-Go-Round, and left to locate Brasserie Reine Mathilde, across from the Notre Dame Cathedral. This is the restaurant where you will be dining later this evening.

Pause to visit Notre Dame Cathedral, a soaring masterpiece of Norman architecture, consecrated on July 14th, 1077 by Bishop Odo, in the presence of his illustrious half-brother, William the Conqueror. Magnificent both inside and out, the cathedral is as large or larger than Notre Dame in Paris, and equally impressive. Later, when you visit the Paris Notre Dame, you can be the one to decide which Notre Dame is more splendid.

The inside of the cathedral is serene, light and airy, with many gothic details, and some of the most striking stained glass in the world, miraculously unharmed during World War II.

On the day the cathedral was consecrated, the 230-foot Bayeux Tapestry was displayed along the walls of its massive sanctuary, communicating to a primarily illiterate populace the details of William’s heroic saga. After taking in the exterior architecture, go inside and take a seat.
