Visit the Musée Normandie

Musée Normandie

Open: 9:30 am–6:00 pm, Wednesday to Monday. Closed Tuesdays until May 3. Open daily beginning June 1st.

Cost: €5.20 (€7.20 to include the special exhibits). Free to anyone under age 26, and for everyone on the first Sunday of each month.

Combo tickets: Purchase a Pass Murailles for entry to both the Normandy Museum and the Musée des Beaux-Arts. 15 € for one person; 25 € for two.

The Normandy Museum is now housed in the 14th-century building that was once the residence of the captain of the château, and later the Governor of Caen. It provides an excellent and interesting introduction to the history of Caen and its wider region. The museum goes back in history, presenting an overview of regional people’s lives throughout Normandy, from prehistoric times to the great migrations in the Middle

Ages and to modern times. Permanent exhibitions cover each historic period, from the earliest traces of human activity to the present age, illustrating the life of Normandy through the centuries.

Free Time Options

After visiting the castle and the Normandy Museum, you will have your choice of three excellent options to pursue:

  1. Browse the shopping streets in city center,

  2. Stroll the Botanical Gardens,

  3. Visit the Musée des Beaux-Arts, inside the walls of the Castle.

You may opt for one or more of these, as you choose, in whatever order, allocating your time according to your interests. Since you and your travel companion may have differing priorities during this free time, this may be a good time to part ways for an hour or so, and meet up later.

Browse the Shopping Street, rue St. Pierre

Rue Saint-Pierre is a popular shopping street in Caen’s city center. As you walk these pedestrian streets, pause to wander in and out. Flowers, chocolates, jewelry, clothing, lingerie, treasures of Normandy…

Even if you are not a shopper by nature, take a stroll along this pedestrian street, pausing to look at the window displays. Check out Le Chocolaterie Hotot (13 rue Saint-Pierre), offering a cornucopia of chocolate products. Stop by Nature & Decourvertes (88-90 rue Saint-Pierre), for decorations, gifts, garden accessories and books on the theme of nature. Then wander through one or two other shops that look interesting. If shops are closed, make note of the ones you would like to visit when you return to Caen in two days.

Agree on a meeting spot where the non-shoppers can perch while the seasoned shoppers enjoy themselves browsing through the boutiques. If the non-shoppers are feeling energetic, they may venture over to the Botanical Gardens or the Musée des Beaux-Arts until time to meet up with the shopping enthusiasts in their midst.
