Guwahati: All Assam Invitational Men and Women Boxing Championship will be held at Titabor Borkhola Higher secondary School from Jan 27. The state team for the National Junior and Senior Womens Championship will be selected from the meet.
Jharkhand beat Assam:
Guwahati: Assam on Jan 20 bowed out from the 49th Under -17 School Football Championship when they lost to Jharkhand by a golden goal played in Bangalore on Jan 20. In 20th January's match both the team had failed to open their account within the stipulated time. In the third minute of the extra time John Toppo scored the lone goal and took his team into the final.
Fencing championship:
Guwahati: The 2nd All Assam Senior Inter District Fencing Championship both for men and woman will be held at the ABITA Indoor Stadium here from January 23 under the aegis of Guwahati District Fencing Association.
GNDG edge past JN College:
Guwahati: GNDG Commerce College of Nagaon on Jan 20 downed JN College of Boko by 17 runs in the ongoing Inter-college Cricket Championship at the GU Playground on Jan 20. Batting first GNDC scored 136 at the loss of eight wickets. In reply, JN College scored 119 for nine.
All India JKAI championships:
Guwahati: The 21st All India JKAI championships is scheduled to be held from January 25 to 31 at Andheri Sports Complex, Mumbai. Prior to the championships there shall be three days training to be conducted by senior Japanese instructor Sihan Soichi Sasaki. Besides training there shall be kyu and black belt grading examinations. Another East Zone level JKAI championships is scheduled from February at Kolkata. The Assam team will participate in both the championships.
PSPB beat Assam in final:
Guwahati: Assam bagged the runners-up trophy in the team events of the Senior National Badminton Championship played in Hyderabad on Jan 18. In the final match defending champion PSPB edged past Assam 2-0 to retain the title.
District taekwondo body formed:
Guwahati: The Kamrup District Taekwondo Association, general body meeting held recently at Assam Olympic Association Office, RG Baruah Sports Complex, Nehru Stadium under the presidentship of Mr Pranjal Baruah have unanimously constituted the executive committee of KDTA for the next session with Pranjal Baruah as president, Diganta Bora as secretary, Ali Ahmed Zafree as treasurer, Bhupal Tahpa and Imradul Haque as joint technical director. mr Banik Ch Das, founder secretary of AATA, Hirannya Saikai, ex-vice-president of AATA and JN Gayan, Dr Niharjyoti Das, ex-president and secretary, respectively of KDTA, have been elected as adviser to the KDTA for the next session.

Assam badminton team leaves for Hyderabad on Jan 14:
Guwahati: A 16-member Assam badminton squad is leaving for Hyderabad on Jan 15 to participate in the Senior National Badminton Championship to be held from January 16.
Easy victory for GCCC:
Guwahati: A fine spell from pacer Debabrata Roy and superb batting display by all-rounder Mrigen Talukder enabled Guwahati Cricket Coaching Centre (GCCC) to earn easy 54 runs victory over Bud Cricket Club in the ongoing 10th Guwahati challenge Cricket Championship at the Latasil Ground on Jan 14.

Guwahati: City Cricket coaching Centre moved into the quarter-final of the 10th Guwahati Challange Cricket Championship beating Assam Police (Blues) by seven wicket played at Latasil Playground here on Jan 13.
Assam win three medals so far:
Guwahati: Assam has so won one gold, one silver and one bronze medals in the ongoing 49th National School Games held at Jalpaiguri. The medal winners are: Ainu Sonowal (gold U-17 Girls, javelin), Nisar Alam(silver U-19 Boys, high jump) and Monalisha Bora (bronze U-19 Girls, 100m hurdles).
GSA opposes ACA move:
Guwahati: In the latest development Guwahati Sports Assiciation (GSA) has expressed its anguished over the Assam Cricket Association (ACA) for its announcement on January 12 that it would construct the proposed cricket stadium at Barsapara, and not at Hengrabari. Reacting to the announcement, GSA president Jatin Borah said that GSA had planned long back to build a sophisticated football stadium at Barsapara and the process was on the cards, but ACA grabbed the plot without any nod from the GSA. Now the GSA urged the State Government to take necessary steps to provide it the plot, failing which it threatened to take to the streets. Meanwhile, GSA has opposed the recent ACA governing body's tenure extension from two to four years. Two years are sufficient for any development works for a committee, said GSA president Jatin Borah.
Uncertainty looms large over National Games:
Guwahati: Bureaucratic wrangles, interference from higher up and rush for alleged commission cut from various contracts have almost derailed the preparedness of the National Games, 2005, in Assam, putting a question mark about the state's sincerity. With barely 17 months left for the games, preliminary work have just begun only to be faltered by the resignation of the chief co-ordinator JP Rajkhowa.
State school cricket team bring laurels:
Guwahati: Assam school cricket team bagged the third place by beating Harayana in U-16 Vinoo Manked Trophy in the the recently in the recently concluded 49th National school Games held in Delhi organised by directorate of Education sports Chandigarh and bagged winner's and runners-up trophies respectively. Top teams were also felicitated by director of education of Delhi.
NFRSA beat Latasil Cricket Coaching:
Guwahati: NFRSA (North-east Frontier Railway Sports Association) beat Latasil Cricket Coaching Centre by nine wickets in a league match of the 10th Guwahati Challanger Cricket championship played at Latasil Playground here on Jan 12. Batting first, Latasil team bundled out for only 91 runs in 26.3 overs. In reply, NFRSA reached the target at the loss of one wickets. Pritom Debnath of NFRSA scored 51 runs. Shantipur AC up:
Guwahati: Shantipur AC won the pre-quarter-final of the 10th Guwahati Challenge Trophy beating Noonmati Cricket Academy by eight wickets being played in the city on Jan 9. Batting first, Noonmati boys scored 171 runs in the stipulated 30 overs. Raj Hussain of Noonmati knocked 58 runs off 47 balls for the team while, Rana Sarma took two wickets for the Shantipur AC. Chasing the target, Shantipur scored 172 runs at the lost of two wickets. Rana Sarma cracked 67 off 60 balls while his team-mate Tauhid Ali Talukdar smashed 78 off 45 balls. Guwahati: Shantipur AC beat Riverrine Club by five wickets in the Madhab Ram Bora Memorial GSA 'A' Division Cricket League being played in the city on Jan 8. Batting first, Riverrine scored 128 in the 29.3 overs. Chasing the target Shantipur AC reached 129 target at the cost of five wickets. Inter-district Kabaddi championship:
Guwahati: The 27th All Assam Inter-district Kabaddi Championship will be held at Gutanagar School Playground from January 28. Around 50 teams in different categories will take part in the championship BRPL, Gauhati University and NF Rly will take part in the championship for the first time.
Trekking expedition by Navankur Gosthi:
Guwahati: An eight-member group of city-based Navankur Gosthi conducted an overnight trekking expedition in the Garbhanga reserved forest (RF) under South Kamrup Forest division recently. The group started from Baisistha temple and went 16 km inside the forest. The highlight of the expedition was the return journey through the rough terrain, which started at midnight with torches made of bamboo in the hands of the members. Nabajyoti Mazumdar (team leader), Binod Teron, Dilip Baruah, Sanjay Das, Pranjal Pathak, Gautom Kalita, Diganta Pathak and Ratul Baruah were the members of the group.
AICS badminton tourney from Feb 2:
Guwahati: The all India Civil Services Badminton Tournament, 2003-04 will be held at Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium, from February 2 to 7. For participation of the Assam team, Assam Secretariat Sports & cultural Organisation has arranged selection trial game on January 9 and 10 in the organisation's premises.
Ranking tennis championship from Jan 28:
Guwahati: North East Tennis foundation will hold the 13th All Assam Ranking Tennis Championship from January 28 to February 2 at its Dispur complex here. The following events will be held in the tournament. Boy's under 12 years, Boy's under 18 years, Girl's under 14 years, Men's and Ladies singles. A veteran doubles tournament will also be held along with the championship where the age categories will be 45 to 55 years and above 55 years. The tournament carries a cash scholarship of Rs 35,000 and AATA ranking points.
Nabajyoti beat City coaching in opener:
Guwahati: Nabajyoti club won the opening match of Madhab Ram Bora GSA 'A' Division Inter-club Cricket Championship beating City Coaching Centre by four wickets. Batting first, City Coaching Centre was all out for 80 runs in 25.4 overs. Partha Ghase of city Coaching Centre scored 11 runs while Bitap Mahanta of Nabajyoti bagged four wickets at the cost of 17 runs and his team-mates Binod Sarma and Salil Sinha took two and one wickets each. In reply, Nabajyoti Club reached the victory target in 27 overs at the cost of six wickets. Vishal Jain of Nabajyoti Club scored 23 runs and his team-mate Khanin Saikia contributed ten run for the winning team. Tomorrow's' match: Ankurjyoti Club vs Maharana Club.
Bud Cricket Club down Ganesguri Jyoti Club:
Guwahati: Bud Cricket Club registered a big win in the second match of 10th Guwahati Challenge Trophy edging Ganeshguri Jyoti Sangha by 156 runs being played at the Latasil playground in the city here on Jan 6. Batting first Bud team piled up a huge total of 302 runs for the lost of three wickets in the stipulated 30 overs. Mukuta Kalita knocked a brilliant century (102 off 69 balls) while Dhrubajyoti Singh scored 96 runs off 43 deliveries. In reply, Ganeshguri Jyoti Sangha bundled out for 146 runs. Assam bite the dust:
Guwahati: Bengal beat Assam by 168 runs in a Ranji Trophy limited overs East Zone one dayer being played at Jamshedpur on Jan 6. Batting first Bengal gathered a mammoth total of 397 runs for the lost of five wickets. Nikhil Haldipur smashed a brilliant 151-runwhile his team mate Devang Gandhi cracked 151 runs which helped Bengal to piled up a huge total. Chasing the modest total Assam was all out for 229. Kiran Power and S Satish were the two Assam's batsmen in the limelight of throughout innings. Powar scored 114 runs while Satish contributed 39 runs for his team. Shivsankar Paul of Bengal took four wickets for the winner. Assam will now take on Bihar in their encounter on January 10.
Srivastav new manager of Indian hockey squad:
Guwahati: GM Srivastav, DGP, Tripura has been selected as the manager of the Indian hockey team which will take part in Sultan Azlan Shah Hockey Tournament to be held in Kuala Lumpur from January 8. The team will fly for the venue from Chennai on Jan 5. Mr Srivastav, an IPS cadre of Assam Meghalaya.
Women Inter-district Football Tournament postponed:
Guwahati: The Women Inter-District Football Tournament was postponed till third week of February as the State team will take part in the Senior National Football Championship to be held at Bhupal from first week of February. The secretary of AFA, Tapan Hazarika said, earlier the inter-district was scheduled to start from January 29, now it will start from third week of February. The selection-cum-trial camp for the Senior National Meet will start within a short period at Kokrajhar, Hazarika said. Meanwhile, the preparation camp for the U-19 north-east Zone Football Championship begun at Biswanath Chariali where 30 footballers are taking part. This time Assam is going to organise the championship and it will start from January 28 at Gossaigaon. All seven states of the region will take part in the Championship.

Mrigen, Parag, Kiran shape Assam victory over Tripura:
Guwahati: Excellent bowling by Mrigen Talukdar helped Assam to beat Tripura by eight wickets in a Ranji Trophy one dayer being played Jamshedpur on Jan 4. Bowling first, Assam restricted Tripura to 170 runs as Mrigen took four valuable wickets in his five overs spell at the cost of 17 runs while, his team-mates Gautam Dutta and Parag Das bagged two wickets each. In reply, Assam toyed Tripura bowlers and reached the winning target in just 20.2 overs. Parag Das and skipper Kiran Powar were in punishing mood and knocked 60 and 64 runs each. After two matches Assam earned 10 points and moved to a comfortable zone in the point tally. In the next match Assam will lock horns with Bengal on January 6.
All Assam Jr Tennis from Jan 18:
Guwahati: The All Assam Junior Tennis Tournament 2003-04 will be held under the auspices of Zaloni Club from January 18 to 24 at Zaloni Club Tennis Court. The tournament is sponsored by Oil India Limited. The tournament will be played in boys singles under 12, 14 and 18 years and girls singles under 14 and 18 years respectively. Altogether 120 players from the various parts of the State are taking part in it.

Dibrugarh bag best team honour:
Guwahati: Dibrugarh district bagged the best team honour with three gold, two silver and one bronze medals, while Dhemaji secured the second position with two gold, two silver and two bronze medals and Kamrup and Lakhimpur jointly grabbed the third slot with two gold, one silver and one bronze medals each in the 2nd All Assam HS School and Junior College Students' meet organised by the Assam Higher Secondary Education Council concluded here on Dec 30 at the Nehru Stadium.

Guwahati: The ACA has announced the names of the following players who would represent the U-17 Assam team in the Vijay Merchant Trophy knock out match to be held at Vizag from January 3, 2004. The following selected players are: Utpal Medhi (captain), Kunal Saikia (Wicketkeeper), Gakul Sarma, Kuldeep Pegu, Sadique Imran Choudhury, Sujay Tarrafdar, Ranjit Mali, Prakash Bhagat, Parvez Yasen Hussain, Githartha Sarath Bordoloi, Abhishek baruah, Jyoti Medhi, Nekibul Haque and Nitul Das.
All Assam Athletic Meets from on Dec 28:
Guwahati: The Assam Higher Secondary Education Council has organized the 2nd All Assam Athletic Meet, which would be held at the Nehru stadium from Dec 28 to Dec 30. A total of 23 districts of the State with more than 600 participants would take part in the meet. Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi will declare the meet open. Pankaj Bora, Education Minister and Sports Minister, Robin Bordoloi will also grace the occasion.
State badminton team leave for Bangalore:
Guwahati: a total of 15 badminton players from Guwahati are leaving for Bangalore to participate in the Inter-SIA Badminton championship slated to be from January 28.
Kalyan Gogoi elected HFI's vice-president:
Guwahati: Kalyan Gogoi, president, Assam Hanball association and member secretary of the State Level advisory Committee for Students and Youth Welfare, Assam has been elected as one of the vice-president of the Handball federation of India (HFI) in the annual general meeting of the association held at Warengal in Andhra Pradesh on Jan 30.

Guwahati: Latasil Cricket coaching Centre beat Star Cricket coaching Centre by six wickets in the 1st Debbrata Banerjee and Vijay Tewari Memorial U-15 Prize Miney Cricket Championship played at Latasil Playground in the city on Jan 30. Batting first, Star Cricket Coaching Centre scored 109 runs at the loss of seven wickets in 20 overs. State level marathon from Feb 13:
Guwahati: Guwahati Idd sports committee has decided to organise Idd sports from February 13 to 17 at Guwahati Idd Gah, Machkhowa. To popularise the Idd sports, a state level prize money marathon has been included among the events and a total ten prizes are declared for the marathon. 1st, 2nd and 3rd prizes will carry amount of Rs6,000, 4,000, 2,000 respectively.
Sports scholarship for budding sports persons:
Guwahati: The State Government will sanction sports scholarship to the talented players \ athletes of school, college \ university level, who participated in any national level \ state level competition and had brought laurels during 2002-03 between 1st April 2004 to 31st March 2003. The important features of the candidates for the selection of scholarship: 1.The age of the players should not be more than 19 years on March 31, 2003. 2. Full time employee, inmates of hostel of SAI \ State Government will not be eligible for the awards. 3. All members of winner \ runner-up in case of team event and first, second and third place winner in individual events in the above state \ national level championship will be eligible. 4. Value of scholarship state level Rs 3600 p.a and national level Rs 4800 p.a stated by the Department of Sports & Youth Welfare, Assam.
State pensioners' sports meet:
Guwahati: Assam Government Pensioners' Association, Guwahati branch has organised pensioners sports in the Chandmari Colony Playground in front of Chandmari Police station on January 31, the penultimate day of the 16th pensioners' fortnight. The sports meet will be inaugurated by sportsman Pulin Das.
Rock climbing camp:
Guwahati: The Assam Mountaineering Association is organising its annual rock climbing-cum-orientation camp for children between the age group 5-12years here. The programme will be held from Dec 31 and Feb 1. After completion of the programme a batch of 15 children will be selected for a high altitude trekking for San-Dak-Phu in Darjeling.
U-15 inter-coaching cricket from Jan 28:
Guwahati: Ankurjyoti Cricket Coaching academy will host the U-15 Inter-coaching Centre Cricket tournament in memories of Debabrata Banerjee (Baruah) and Vijoy Tewari, ex-Ranji player at the Latasil Playground from January 28 to February 5. The tournament will be inaugurated by Umesh Chandra Sarma, president, Assam Veterans Cricketers Association.
Guwahati in JK Barua semis:
Guwahati: Guwahati on Jan entered into the semifinal of the U-19 JK Barua Inter-district Cricket Championship defeating Kokrajhar by virtue of the first innings lead of 112 runs at played Mangaldoi on Jan 27. The winning side declared their first innings too Kokrajhar batsmen couldn't perform well and at the end of the match they were 122 for the loss of 8 wickets. Guwahati will take on NF Rly in semifinal which is scheduled to begin at Mangaldoi from January 29.

Guwahati: The All Assam Ranking Tennis Championship will begin at the NETF Court on Jan 28. 142 participants will take part in the five-day championship. The chairman of the NETF, JC Pegu will inaugurate the championship.
PG College in final:
Guwahati: PG College on Jan 27 cruised into the final of the ongoing Inter-College Cricket championship defeating MC college of Barpeta by two wickets. In today's, the first semifinal, played at the GU Play ground MC College scored 109 for six wickets in the stipulated 25 overs. In reply, PG College reached the winning target at the loss eight wickets. In 29th January's second semifinal, Darrang College will take on Goalpara College.
Narzary to lead Assam U-9 football team:
Guwahati: Nitu Narzary will lead Assam in the forthcoming U-19 National Football (NE Zone) to be held at Gossaigaon from January 28.announcing the 20-member team, to coached by Biswanath Chakraborty, the joint secretary of the Assam Football Association, Mr Tapan Hazarika said that the team will leave for Gossaigaon on January 24.
GSA cricket: Nabajyoti outplays Maharana
Guwahati: Nabajyoti Club on Jan 21 outplayed Maharana AC by 9 wickets in the Madhab Ram Bora GSA 'A' Division Inter Club cricket Championship played at the Nehru Stadium here on Jan 21. Electing to bat first, Maharana were all out for 83 in just 20 overs. Among the Nabajyoti bowlers Bhaskar Jyoti Barman was the most successful bagging 3 wickets giving away just 8 runs. In reply Nabajyoti scored the winning runs within 9.1 overs with Sibshankar Roy remaining not out on 43.
NFRSA in semis of Guwahati Challenge:
Guwahati: Kuldeep Pegus all-round performance on Jan 21 went in vain as NFRSA entered the semi final of the Guwahati Challange Trophy outplaying City Cricket Coaching Centre (CCCC) by 139 runs in the Latasil ground here on Jan 21. Batting first, NFRSA on Jan 21 piled a huge total of 259 runs at the loss of 7 wickets in their stipulated 30 overs. In reply CCCC were bundled out for 120.
Abhayapuri, Goalpara register win:
Guwahati: Abhayapuri College and Goalpara College registered their win in the ongoing Inter College registered their win in the ongoing Inter College Cricket Championship in the GU ground here. While Abhayapuri College downed Lumding College by 27 runs, Goalpara College proved better against KC Das College by 9 wickets. Brief score: Abhyapuri College-142/5, J Das 66. Lumding College-115 all out. In the second match, KC Das College 68/8; Goalpara College 70/1.
