School annual athletic meet:
Guwahati: The two-day Annual Athletic Meet of Purvanchal and enthusiasm. The meet was inaugurated by K Chanda, principal, South point School. KK Gupta, director of the school welcomed the chief guest and the gathering. Mr Chanda, in his inaugural address advised the students to take part in sports and declared the meet open.
Trekking camp concludes:
Guwahati: The All India Trekking camp of NCC held for the first time in the State concluded on Dec 25 at its Base camp in Chandrapur Thermal Club. The 17-day camp was attended by nearly 1,000 cadets of different colleges and schools from all states and Union territories of India except those from Bihar and Jharkhand. This new trek, coined Pragjyotishpur Trek was conceived, planned and executed by Guwahati NCC Group from December 8 to 25. Lt. Col. Ranjit thakur was entrusted for this task which went off in an excellent manner.
Sports & cultural festival:
Guwahati: The closing ceremony of VIII Assam Sports & Cultural Festival will be held on December 28 at Kumar Bhaskar Natya Mandir to commemorate the 89th birth anniversary of Lauhapurush Premoda Kanta Sarma, freedom fighter and father of modern and adventure sports and culture of North-east region with a day long programme.
Inter-city club sports carnival:
Guwahati: The nine premier city clubs- Calcutta Club, The Bengal Club, The Tollygunge Club, The Saturday Club Ltd., Calcutta Cricket and Football Club, The Calcutta Swimming Club, the Calcutta Racket Club, The Bengal Rowing club and Royal and Royal Calcutta Golf Club- are coming together once again to host the much-hyped Inter-city Club Sports Carnival from February 27 to 29, 2004. 24 clubs, including 9 city clubs, would be participating in the carnival. The sports carnival will comprise of five sports- bridge, golf, snooker, squash and tennis, which will be held at the venues provided by the host clubs by rotation.

Guwahati: Guwahati Chess Association is organising a chess tournament from January 4, 2004 at Manipuri Basti High School for the preparation of coming All Assam Chess Championship to be held at Rangiya from January 16 to 25, 2004. The tournament will be open to all special prizes will be awarded to first two players.

Guwahati: Coca-Cola India announced its title sponsorship of the country's most prestigious soccer championship even National Football League. The company has signed an agreement with the country's apex soccer body, All India Football Federation, to sponsor the league for a period of two years.
Kamrup veteran team announced:
Guwahati: Kamrup district Veterans' Amateur Athletic association has announced a team of 57 veteran athletes for representing Kamrup district in the 12th All Assam veterans' Amateur Athletic Championship to be held at Digboi from December 26 to 28. The team consists of 27 women athletes from 35 years to 70 years and 30 men athletes from 40 years to 80 years in different age groups.

Guwahati: Assam's impressive performance in the Ranji Trophy this season has taken many a critics by surprise. Having lost to Gujarat in the season opener, Assam got the better of Hyderabad in the next match though they failed to get a point. In the next match against Bengal, Assam nearly won the match but for the match umpires and referee. Tamil Nadu then defeated Assam in the next match, but Assam recovered strongly to beat Rajasthan to get four points. As the team head to Bangalore for what should possibly be the last match of their Ranji season, three faces have stood out. Guwahati: Assam table tennis has bagged the third position in the 65th Senior National Table Tennis Championship recently held at Gurgaon. The state team has left for Ajmer to participate in the 65th Sub-junior National and Inter-state Table Tennis Championship. The Championship will start from Dec 26 to January 1.

Guwahati: The Assam Cricket Association has announced the names of the players who would represent Assam at the Vijay Merchant U-17 Cricket Tournament to be played against Tripura on December 14 at Agartala.

List of State eves' boxing team yet to be submitted:
Guwahati: A total of 163 players including officials are leaving for Manipur to take part in the North East Sports Festival. Pronab Siakia, Assistant Secretary, Sports Council of Assam expressed dissatisfaction that out of 9 discipline that would take place at the Festival, he has not officially received the players list in several disciplines. Saikia said it was only the Assam Hockey Association that submitted the names of the players in time. Though the Sports Council of Assam asked the State Association to submit the players list of the different disciplines, yet the State Association has not taken the matter seriously, he said.

The State contingent will participate in 9 disciplines in the sports festival. They are badminton, athletics, boxing, hockey, judo, table tennis, taekwondo, weightlifting and wrestling.
Manipur-bound eves' hockey team flay authority:
Guwahati: Assam women's hockey team who have left for Manipur for the North-east Sports Festival have not been given any special coaching for the event. Atul Chandra Borah, manager of the team informed that the selected team list was announced on December 9 for which the participants coming from different part of the State were deprived of the minimum opportunity to participate for the event. Moreover he added that some of the players were also participating in the Sub-junior Women Hockey Championship at Hailakandi and the list was declared so lately the selected players could not practice as a team for the event and therefore they will have to play directly in the main draw, he added.

ACA demands suspension of umpires, referee:
Guwahati: The Assam Cricket Association on Dec 6 officially lodged a complaint against the Umpire and the match referee of the Assam versus Bengal Ranji Trophy Elite Group B match to the BCCI and asked the latter to take 'stern' action and demanded immediate suspension of the umpire and the match referee who had 'deliberately' stopped Assam from getting an easy victory in the tie.
Soccer referees exam on Dec 28:
Guwahati: The provisional class I and II referee examination of football referees will be held on December 28 centrally at Guwahati. All intending candidates has been asked to contact their District Sports Association for details and to send the complete application to the Assam Football Association office, by December 14. ACA decries Eden fiasco:
Guwahati: The Assam Cricket Association has vehemently protested against Assam by the match referee and the umpire at Ranji match played on December 4 at Kolkata. Honorary secretary ACA informed that the ACA would launch a protest against the umpire and the match referees who 'deliberately' denied Assam the win. Baruah has also added that the match was not played according to the rules and the regulations set up by the BCCI. The umpires and the referee have not done their duties as per the rules and hence are liable for the fiasco.

Guwahati: Latasil Cricket Coaching Club defeated Young Blue A.C by 62 run at the opening match of the 12th Dinesh Goswami Memorial Cricket Tournament played here today at the Latasil Ground. Latasil Club scored 208 run in stipulated 30 overs. Sandip Singhi scored 77 in 58 balls whereas Benoy Rooth scored 53.
Fencing team all set for Bangalore meet:
Guwahati: Preparation of the Assam State fencing squad is afoot for the forthcoming inaugural National Youth Sports meet, which is scheduled to be held in Bangalore from January 4 to 8, 2004. The Festival, will be held under the aegis of the Karnataka Olympic Association and the supervision of the Indian Olympic Association. In this nation-wide first youth sports meet, a total of 17 discipline will be held including fencing. Teams having secured positions within number eight in the National Junior Championship and those have qualified to participate in individual category will get entry in the mega event. Assam state squad have already qualified for men's 'AP' team section and 'Foil' team section in fencing category. In the individual category, Tanik Kayastha and Ranjit Singh have qualified for 'Foil' section, while in 'AP' section of individual category Ranjit Singh and Barperu Singh and in sabre section L Debajit made it into the team. A special month long training camp will start from December to speed up the preparation.

Guwahati: The U-17 football team from Kokrajhar Higher Secondary School is leaving for New Delhi on Dec 1 to participate in the Subroto Mukherjee Cup Football Tournament. The team will play its first match against Chattisgarh on Dec 4 and against Orrissa and Bihar on Dec 5 and 7 respectively. It is noteworthy to mention that in 1980, a Kokrajhar school won the Subroto Cup while a year previous to that it was the bridesmaid. Guwahati: Arlene Konwar's magnificent bowling nearly gave Assam two vital points as the four-day Ranji Trophy match between Assam and Hyderabad ended in a draw here at the Maligaon Railway Stadium without the completion of the first innings. Konwar under pressure for not bowling upto his potential since the last Ranji season, picked up six scalp in a marathon spell of 65 overs but lack of support from the other end undid his good work as Hyderabad tailenders blocked out the final few balls to go unscathed from here.

Eveready withdraw, Fransa coming on Nov 26:
Guwahati: The 52nd Bordoloi Trophy fixture was revised on Nov 25 following the withdrawal of another Kolkata Club Eveready due to the prevailing situation in Assam. Meanwhile, the Gaon out Fransa will be arriving in the city on Nov 26 much to the relief of the Guwahati Sports Association, the organisers. According to new fixture, the quarter-final stage of the match will begin on Nov 25 where Nagaland Police will take on Assam State Electricity Board at the Nehru Stadium under floodlights from 4.45p.m. In another quarter-final on Nov 27, Oil India Limited will take on NF Railway under floodlights while Assam Regimental Centre will take on SAI, Guwahati at Mirza on same day. The last quarter-final will pit Fransa against Shillong XI.

AOA asks State associations to submit players' list:
Guwahati: The Assam Olympic Association has asked all the State associations to submit their list of qualified players born on or after January 1, 1985 and the officials, along with two copies of passport size photographs and birth certificates of the players, which was issued from educational institution or municipal corporation on or before November 30, 2003 to participate in the first National Youth Games 2003 which will be Bangalore from January 4 to 11, 2004. The AOA has also requested the all state association to submit their railway concession certificate on or before December 1, 2003.

State referee officiates Nat Junior V'ball final:
Guwahati: Prasanta Talukdar, an employee of Indian Oil Corporation Ltd, Guwahati Refinery participated in the 12th Mini National Volleyball Championship held at Bangalore as a national volleyball referee from the North-east. Former national player Talukdar also supervised the final match (boys) of the championship which was played between Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. Tamil Nadu won match 3-2. Can it get any worse than this?
Guwahati: The Bordoloi Trophy never had it so bad. It seems the 52nd edition of this premier soccer tournament has been jinxed from the very beginning. It had to be deferred due to the one day international cricket match between Australia and New Zealand. It then saw top Kolkata teams pulling out due to clash of dates with the National Football League. As if this were enough, the tension in the railway stations of Bihar and subsequent developments in Assam saw top teams like SAIL and one Goa pulling out. To top it all, limited spectators in matches played hitherto have dented the spirit of the organisers- GSA. Jatindra Kumar Borah, president GSA informed that an average of Rs 300 is coming from the gate sales and so far the GSA had been able to accumulate a meagre Rs 1,000 from the sale of tickets.
Seven referees to conduct district soccer:
Guwahati: The Assam Football Association has selected seven referees of the State to conduct the 54th Inter-district Senior Football Championship. The championship would be held at Tinsukia under the joint aegis of Assam Football Association and Tinsukia Sports Association from Nov 29. The joint secretary asked the selected referees to arrived in Tinsukia on Nov 28.
AFA's examination for referees on Dec 28:
Guwahati: The Assam Football Association is going to hold fist and second class referee (Provisional) cooper test, written and oral examination on Dec 28 at the Guwahati SAI Complex. The Association asked the interested candidates to attend at the SAI's New field Complex on December 28 by 6am. The candidates will also submit application forms through the respective district sports associations before December 14 with High School Leaving Pass certificates of second and third class referee pass certificates with the application forms.

Guwahati: The All Assam Open Kung-Fu Championship will be held at Gorhal, under the aegis of Gorhal Dragon Kung-Fu Academy from November 28 to 30. For the smooth conduct of the event, 18-member committee has been constituted with Babul Baruah as president and Kishor Barman as general secretary. State scene takes its toll on Bordoloi Trophy:
Guwahati: The mounting tension in Assam and in the railway stations of Bihar on Nov 20 badly affected the Bordoloi Trophy when Steel Authority of India Limited, Kolkata pulled out of the tournament. A senior official of the GSA on condition of anonymity has confirmed that a fax from the Kolkata team has expressed the inability of the team to play in Assam. Tata Football Academy of Jamshedpur too are having second thoughts about playing in Assam while the Gaon outfit Fransa are also apprehensive of coming to Assam. However, GSA officials are tight-lipped about TFA and the team from Goa and refused to comment on their prospect of playing in the 52nd edition of the Bordoloi Trophy.
Bengali Boys, Mother Ayesha in last 4:
Guwahati: Bengali Boys Higher Secondary School defeated Don Bosco High School by 14 runs to enter the final of the Inter-School Cricket Tournament, organised by the GSA, being played at the Sector II, Noonmati Ground here on Nov 20. Bengali Higher Secondary School gave a target of 147 runs to Don Bosco and then bowled the oppositions out for 133. In another match in the tournament, Mother Ayesha English School defeated Happy Child English School by 55 runs and confirmed its place in the semifinal. Mother Ayesha English School scored 180 runs and in reply Happy Child School could muster 125 runs only. Tomorrow's semifinal match will be played between Hindustani Kendriya Vidyalaya and Mother Ayesha English high School. The final match of the tournament will be played on November 24 at same ground.
52nd Bordoloi Trophy - SAI, Guwahati trounce 2nd ASRF in opener
Guwahati: SAI, Guwahati edged past 2nd ASRF 4-2 at the inaugural match of the 52nd Lokopriya Gopinath Bordoloi Football Tournament being played at the Nehru Stadium here on Nov 19.
Trekking expedition concludes:
Guwahati: Tsangpo, a leading adventure sports organisation of the State recently undertook a trekking expedition to Lahoul-Spiti Valley, Himachal Pradesh. A six-member team successfully trekked Hamta Pass, Hamta Top and Hamta Glacier, which situated at an altitude of 16500 ft.
52nd Bordoloi Trophy from on Nov 19:
Guwahati: The 52nd Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi Trophy Football tournament, the oldest soccer meet of the region will begin on Nov 19 at the Nehru Stadium here. The championship will be formally inaugurated by Sports Minister Capt. Robin Bordoloi while former footballer of the State Narayan Borah will grace the occasion as the guest of honour. In the inaugural match, 2nd ASRF will lock horns with SAI, Guwahati. The organisers have kept the price of ticket at Rs 5.
Cycling squad skips competition:
Guwahati: The Assam cycling squad will not participate in the forth coming National Track Championships scheduled to be held at Ludhiana in view of the tense situation prevailing in the railway stations of Bihar, the Cycling Association of Assam informed this.

Guwahati: Opener Akash Christian was once again the thorn in Assam's flesh as he scored a solid century to guide Gujarat to a seven-wicket win over Assam in the Elite Group 'B' Ranji Trophy match being played at the Nehru Stadium here. Resuming at their overnight score of 302 for three, hosts Assam took everybody by surprise when they declared after adding only 10 runs to their score waiting only for Vasant Sarwanan to complete his second Ranji century.

Gujarat take lead in Ranji tie vs Assam:
Guwahati: Gujarat batsman Akash Christian scored a fighting 73 in the face of some good and tight bowling from Assam, to help his team gain a vital lead in the four-day Ranji Trophy League match here at the Nehru Stadium on Nov 16. At close of play, Gujarat were 213 for 6 with Mukund Parmar not out on 43 and Timil Patel on 29 with both having put on 68 run for the 7th wicket. At one stage Gujarat were tottering at 145 for 6 but the experience of Parmar guided them through the difficult period.
Subrajit, Sarvanand save Assam from blushes in Ranji opener

Guwahati: Assam new Ranji skipper had a disastrous start to hios captaincy when the hosts were bowled out for 180 on the first day of the 4-day Ranji Trophy opener against Gujarat here at the Nehru Stadium on Nov 15. Opting to bat first on what seemed like a good wicket, Assam found the going tough right from the start and lost wickets at regular intervals to be folded for a paltry total.
