departments, institutes, faculties, universities
1. Titles of job positions generally have an initial capital letter, particularly informal documents (e.g. CVs, biographies for conferences) and when the position is held only by one person (in such cases a / an is not required. If the position is held by more than one person ( a / an required, then initial capitals are not necessary though they may still be found.
2. Titles of degrees that are followed by the subject of study have an initial capital letter.
3. Subjects (mathematics, anthropology, history) have no initial capitalization when they are being talked about as subjects of study. However, when they are part of the name of a department, institute or faculty, they require initial capitalization.
4. The terms department, institute, faculty and university (and similar words) only require capitalization when referring to a specific department, university etc. The rules of initial capitalization for each individual word in the name of a department follow the rules given in
24.1.1
