Leonard Paul Sheil (born 1927) [Epsom College 1941-1945. prefect] was the son of Dr L. J. Sheil, of Harlow, Essex. He received his medical education at Trinity College, Cambridge, and St Thomas’s Hospital. He was appointed Medical Officer, for Southampton University, based at the Student Health Service. After the Second World War he completed his National Service in the R.A.F. Medical Branch.

James Anstice Williams (born 1927) [Epsom College 1941-1945. prefect] was the son of R. S. Williams, of the Bank of England, of Leatherhead, Surrey. He received his medical education at Clare College, Cambridge, and St Bartholomew’s Hospital. He went into general practice at Leatherhead, Surrey. He previously served in the R.A.F. as a Flight Lieutenant.
WILLIAM ANTHONY CAMPBELL DOW (1927-1958). B.Sc., M.B., B.S. (Lond.), M.R.C.S., L.R.C.P. (Eng.).
William Anthony Campbell Dow (1927-1958) [Epsom College 1942-1945] was the son of Dr J. C. Dow, of Redditch, Worcestershire, and brother of Dr Thomas Campbell Dow [Epsom College 1938-1940], and Dr Iain Campbell Dow [Epsom College 1942-1946]. He received his medical education at St Mary’s Hospital and then emigrated to Australia, where he ran a single-handed practice at Fremantle, Western Australia. He completed his National Service in the R.A.M.C., in Germany and then Cyprus during the Suez crisis. He died in Australia after a road crash.

Philip Graham Allen (born 1928) [Epsom College 1941-1946] was the son of A. G. Allen, dentist, of Upper Wimpole Street, London. He received his medical education at Corpus Christi College, Cambridge, and the London Hospital. He went into general practice at Cowfold, Horsham, West Sussex (1959-1990).

Peter Francis Poole Lansdown (1928-2001) [Epsom College 1939-1940. prefect] was the son of Dr R. B. P. Lansdown, of Coulsdon, Surrey, grandson of Dr Robert Guthrie Poole Lansdown, M.D. [Epsom College 1880-1882], and brother of Lieutenant John Robert Poole Lansdown [Epsom College 1938-1943], and Michael Guy Poole Lansdown [Epsom College 1944-1948]. He received his medical education at Guy’s Hospital, and went into general practice at Sanderstead, Surrey. He was President of the Old Epsomian Club (1989-1990), and the Old Epsomian Golf Society.
KENNETH JOHN DALGLEISH (1928-2010). M.B., B.S. (Lond.).
Kenneth John Dalgleish (1928-2010) [Epsom College 1940-1946. Cricket XI. Ann du Bois Prize] was the son of Dr John Dalgleish, of Lincoln. He received his medical education at the Middlesex Hospital, and entered general practice at Chislehurst, Kent, in 1956, but later (1966) emigrated to Australia. He joined a practice in Hervey Bay, Queensland and later, in 1973, moved to Brisbane, where he became involved in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching. He retired in 1996.
DAN MARTIN CUTHBERT (1928-2007). M.B., B.S. (Lond.).
Dan Martin Cuthbert (1928-2007) [Epsom College 1942-1947. prefect. Rugby XV] was the son of Dr J. R. Cuthbert, of Leigh-on-Sea, Essex, and brother of Ian Cuthbert [Epsom College 1945-1950]. He received his medical education at St Bartholomew’s Hospital, and went into general practice in Leigh-on-Sea and later in Billericay, Essex. He was a member of the St Bartholomew’s Rugby XV that won the Inter-Hospitals Rugby Cup in 1952. He was also a keen sailor who took part in the Fastnet Race several times.

John Laing Stevenson (1928-1998) [Epsom College 1942-1947. prefect] was the son of Dr John Stevenson, M.C., of Stourbridge, Worcestershire. He received his medical education at St Mary’s Hospital, and went into general practice at Stotfold, near Hitchin, Hertfordshire. He previously served as a Captain in the R.A.M.C.

Roy McDonald Rowland (born 1928) [Epsom College 1944-1945] was the son of Dr John Rowland, of Battersea, South London. He received his medical education at Aberdeen University, and went into general practice at Wolverhampton, Staffordshire. He was previously a Surgeon Lieutenant in the R.N.V.R.

Philip John Edwards (born 1928) [Epsom College 1941-1945] was the son of Dr William Edwards, of Ashtead, Surrey. He received his medical education at King’s College Hospital, and went into general practice at Haywards Heath, Sussex. He was ordained as a Clerk in Holy Orders, and was the incumbent in the Parish of Haywards Heath, Sussex. He was previously a general practitioner at Ashtead, Surrey.

Peter Samuel Kershaw (born 1928) [Epsom College 1941-1943] was the son of M. A. Kershaw, estate agent, of Manchester. He received his medical education at the London Hospital, and went into general practice at Hornchurch, Essex, where he was also an Associate Medical Director of the St Francis Hospice, Havering, Essex, and a Barrister at Law of the Inner Temple. He was previously a Captain (Specialist Dermatologist) in the R.A.M.C.

Iain Campbell Dow (born 1928) [Epsom College 1942-1946] was the son of Dr J. C. Dow, of Redditch, Worcestershire, and brother of Dr Thomas Campbell Dow [Epsom College 1938-1940], and Dr William Campbell Dow [Epsom College 1942-1945]. He received his medical education at Queen’s College, Cambridge, and St Mary’s Hospital. He went into general practice at Redditch, Worcestershire, and was appointed Practitioner Anaesthetist at Smallwood Hospital, Redditch, and Bromsgrove Hospital, as well as Clinical Assistant (Casualty) at Smallwood Hospital. He was formerly Resident Anaesthetist for the Hastings Hospital Group. He served his National Service as a Captain in the R.A.M.C.

James Stewart Bland (born 1928) [Epsom College 1941-1946. head prefect. Rugby XV. Cricket XI. Brande and Claude Calthrop Essay Prizes] was the son of Dr H. W. Bland, of Halesowen, Birmingham, and brother of Roger Bland [Epsom College 1946-1952]. He received his medical education at Clare College, Cambridge, and Birmingham Hospitals. He was appointed Medical Superintendent at the Woodlands School, New Westminster, Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. He was a member of the Cambridge University Golf Team.

Arthur Thomas Robinson (born 1928) [Epsom College 1942-1946] was the son of Dr G. C. B. Robinson, of Worcester Park, Surrey. He received his medical education at King’s College Hospital, and went into general practice at Worcester Park, Surrey. He was a Clinical Assistant (Psycho-Geriatrics) at Long Grove Hospital, Epsom, and a member of the Medical Staff at Claremont Hospital, Surbiton.

Callum Roy Weir Bain (born 1928) [Epsom College 1940-1945. Captain of Athletics] was the son of Dr L. W. Bain, M.C., of Catford, South London, and brother of Dr Angus Howard Bain [Epsom College 1939-1943]. He received his medical education at the Westminster Hospital and King’s College Hospital, and went into general practice at Epsom, Surrey. He was previously a Medical Registrar at the Westminster Hospital.

Richard Hadden Wattsford (born 1928) [Epsom College 1942-1946. Rugby XV. MacFarlane Cup] was the son of Dr H. F. Wattsford, of Newcastle upon Tyne, and brother of George Harcourt Wattsford [Epsom College 1945-1948]. He received his medical education at Newcastle and Durham Universities, and went into general practice at Gosforth, Newcastle-upon-Tyne. Befiore this he served as a Medical Officer in the R.A.F. He was a member of the London –v- Paris Schools Athletics team.

James Duff Grice (born 1928) [Epsom College 1941-1946] was the son of Dr W. E. Grice, of Sutton, Surrey. He received his medical education at the Middlesex Hospital, and he went into general practice at Cheam, Surrey.

Kenneth Harold Lewis (born 1928) [Epsom College 1942-1946. Ralph Gooding Botany and Watts Science Prizes] was the son of Dr H. E. Lewis, of Hampstead, London, and brother of Neville Frank Lewis [Epsom College 1944-1947]. He was an Exhibitioner of St John’s College, University of Oxford, and completed his medical training at St Mary’s Hospital. He was appointed Clinical Assistant in the Department of Cardiology at the Middlesex Hospital, and was previously Resident Medical Officer at the King Edward VII Hospital for Officers, London, Medical Adviser for Capitol Radio, and Medical Adviser for Union Texas Petroleum. He was President of the Hampstead Medical Society, and a Fellow of the Hunterian Society. He previously served as a Surgeon Lieutenant in the R.N.V.R.

Nigel Dennis Walsh (born 1928) [Epsom College 1943-1947. Prosser-White Prize] was the son of E. A. Walsh, of Epsom, and brother of Dr Peter Roderick Walsh [Epsom College 1931-1935]. He received his medical education at St George’s Hospital, and was appointed Medical Director of Parke Davis, having previously been the Medical Director of Warner Lambert International, Morris Plains, New Jersey, USA. Before these appointments he was an Honorary Medical Officer at Dorrigo Hospital, New South Wales, Australia. He was a Fellow of the Hunterian Society, and a member of the Australian Medical Association.

He received his medical education at University College Hospital, and went into general practice at Bournemouth, Dorset.

Charles Brian McShane (born 1928) [Epsom College 1942-1946] was the son of Dr Charles McShane, of Chelmsford, Essex. He received his medical education at Queen’s University, Belfast, and went into general practice at Litton Cheney, near Dorchester, Dorset, where he was also Medical Officer for H.M. Borstal and The Verne Prison, Portland, Dorset. He was previously a Medical Officer in the Colonial Medical Service, based in Kenya, and a Lieutenant-Colonel in the R.A.M.C. He was a Fellow of the Royal Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene.

James Wallace Mann (born 1928) [Epsom College 1942-1946. prefect. Piper Memorial Prize] was the son of Dr J. W. Mann, of Gipsy Hill, South London. He received his medical education at St Mary’s Hospital, and went into general practice at Alleyn Park, South London. He was a Clinical Assistant in the Department of Rheumatology and Rehabilitation at King’s College Hospital, the Croydon and Warlingham Park Group Hospitals, and Medical Officer at the Norwood and District Hospital. He was President of the Harveian Society, and a member of the Sydenham and District Medical Society.

He received his medical education at Edinburgh University, and went into general practice at Howden, Goole, Yorkshire. He received his medical education at University College Hospital, and went into general practice at Ramsgate, Kent, where he was also Clinical Assistant (Medicine) at Thanet Hospital, Medical Officer for the Civil Service Department, and Examining Medical Officer for the Department of Health and Social Security.

Alfred David Tuddenham (born 1929) [Epsom College 1945-1948. prefect] was the son of A. H. Tuddenham, schoolmaster, of Kingston, Surrey. He received his medical education at Guy’s Hospital, and was appointed Divisional Medical Officer for British Railways Southern Region, and British Rail Engineering Ltd. He was also Medical Officer for British Sealink (UK) Ltd., and the Portsmouth and Weymouth Association of British Ports. He was a member of the Association of Occupational Health.

Denis Arthur Roche (1929-2011) [Epsom College 1941-1946] was the son of Dr A. K. Roche, of Tenby, Pembrokeshire, and brother of Cecil Bernard Roche [Epsom College 1935-1940]. He received his medical education at the Middlesex Hospital, and he was appointed Occupational Physician for the Worcester and District Hospital Authority, and the Hereford and Worcestershire County Councils. He was previously Superintendent of the United Mission Bhadgaon Hospital at Kathmandu, Nepal, and the United Mission Hospital, Bhaktapur, Nepal. His work was mainly concerned with the treatment of tuberculosis.

Guy Harris (born 1929) [Epsom College 1943-1948. Watts Science, Ralph Gooding Botany and Chemistry, and Propert Prizes] was the son of Dr A. P. Harris, of Shipston-on-Stour, Warwickshire. He was an Exhibitioner of Merton College, University of Oxford, and completed his clinical training at the Radcliffe Infirmary. He went into general practice at Shipston-on-Stour, Warwickshire.

James Rawson Blatch (born 1929) [Epsom College 1944-1948. prefect. Rugby XV. MacFarlane Cup] was the son of C. N. S. Blatch, solicitor, of Lymington, Hampshire. He received his medical education at Trinity Hall, Cambridge, and St Thomas’s Hospital. He went into general practice at Havant, Hampshire.

John Michael Prosser Davies (born 1929) [Epsom College 1943-1948. prefect] was the son of Dr C. E. P. Davies, of Machen, near Caerphilly, South Wales. He received his medical education at Guy’s Hospital, and went into general practice at Newport, Gwent, South Wales, where he was also Medical Referee for the Benefits Agency.
HUGH KELSON FORD (1929-2004). C.V.O., M.B., B.S. (Lond.), D.Obst.R.C.O.G., F.R.C.G.P.
Hugh Kelson Ford (1929-2004) [Epsom College 1942-1946. Smith-Pearse Botany Prize] was the son of Dr R. K. Ford, of Chelsea, London, and brother of Wynne Kelson Ford [Epsom College 1940-1943], and Dr Roger Kelson Ford [Epsom College 1947-1951]. He won an Exhibition to the London Hospital, and then was awarded the Jenks Scholarship of the Royal College of Surgeons. After two years in the Royal Navy, studying the effects of high-speed flight, he went into general practice at Heacham, Norfolk, where he was the senior partner for 33 years. Early in his career he was appointed Surgeon Apothecary to the Royal Household at Sandringham, a post that he held for 23 years. Hugh Ford was the second Old Epsomian doctor to hold this post (see Sir Alan Reeve Manby [Epsom College 1859-1864]). He was deeply involved in medical education, and in 1970 was instrumental in starting the local vocational training scheme, which was one of the first in East Anglia. As an early member of the Royal College of general Practitioners he was elected Provost of the East Anglian Faculty. His interest in palliative care culminated in his founding the Norfolk Hospice in 1984. He served as a church warden and became a bishop’s selector, helping to select candidates to enter the ministry.

Peter John Barber (born 1929) [Epsom College 1943-1946. Ralph Gooding Chemistry and Botany Prizes] was the son of Percy Barber, of Melbourne, Australia. He was a Scholar of Trinity College, University of Oxford, and completed his medical education at St Bartholomew’s Hospital. He went into general practice at Birmingham.

Richard John Haythornthwaite (born 1929) [Epsom College 1945-1948. prefect. Smith-Pearse Natural History Prize] was the son of Lieutenant-Colonel R. A. Haythornthwaite, I.M.S., of Bexhill, Sussex. He received his medical education at Jesus College, Cambridge, and the Westminster Hospital. He went into general practice at Cheviot, North Canterbury, New Zealand (1975-1989), where he was also the Divisional Surgeon for the St John’s Ambulance Brigade. He was previously a Major in the R.A.M.C. (Millbank Military Hospital).

Brian Richards Carson (born 1929) [Epsom College 1939-1942] was the son of Dr F. V. Carson, of Surbiton, Surrey. He received his medical education at St Thomas’s Hospital, and went into general practice at Market Harborough, Leicestershire. He was previously a Squadron Leader in the R.A.F. Medical Branch.

David Thornton Finlay (born 1929) [Epsom College 1943-1948. prefect. Rugby XV] was the son of Dr J. E. Finlay, of Honiton, Devon, and brother of John Flamank Finlay [Epsom College 1942-1945], and Dr James Alexander Finlay [Epsom College 1940-1943]. He received his medical education at St John’s College, Cambridge, and St Thomas’s Hospital. He went into general practice at Countess Wear, near Exeter, Devon.

Thomas Albert Christian Lorenzen (born 1929) [Epsom College 1943-1947] was the son of Dr A. E. Lorenzen, of Dorking, Surrey, and brother of Charles Christopher Martin Lorenzen [Epsom College 1946-1951]. He received his medical education at the Middlesex Hospital, and went into general practice at Oxford. He was previously a Captain in the R.A.M.C.

David William Ian Macrae Sandilands (born 1930) [Epsom College 1944-1949. prefect. Propert, Watts Science, Ralph Gooding Botany and Headmaster’s Choir Prizes] was the son of Dr I. M. Sandilands, of Birmingham. He was a Scholar of Corpus Christi College, Cambridge, and completed his medical training at St Thomas’s Hospital. He went into general practice at Moseley, Birmingham, and was Clinical Assistant at the Moseley Hall Geriatric Hospital, Birmingham. He was a member of the Association of Police Surgeons of Great Britain.

David Bowen Morgan Williams (born 1930) [Epsom College 1943-1946] was the son of Dr M. G. Williams, of Cardiff. He received his medical education at the University of Wales, and went into general practice at Ely, Cardiff, but later emigrated to Australia where he joined the Highway Medical Centre, Dandenong, Victoria.

John Wallis Blaxill (1930-2010) [Epsom College 1943-1948. prefect. Rugby XV] was the son of Dr Bernard Blaxill, of Solihull, Warwickshire, and brother of Richard Bernard Wallis Blaxill [Epsom College 1952-1954]. He received his medical education at Christ’s College, Cambridge, and St Thomas’s Hospital. He went into general practice at Watton, near Thetford, Norfolk, and was previously Registrar in Anaesthetics at the Norfolk and Norwich Hospital.

Edward Austen Cornwall Buckell (born 1930) [Epsom College 1943-1948. prefect. Rugby XV] was the son of Dr M. A. Buckell, of Shipley, Yorkshire, and brother of Dr Aston Durell Cornwall Buckell [Epsom College 1937-1948]. He received his medical education at University College Hospital, and went into general practice at Bexley, Kent.
