New AAMC Resource - Anatomy of An Applicant

The Association of American Medical Colleges is pleased to announce the launch of the Anatomy of an Applicant website (www.aamc.org/competencies), which features six student profiles, a workbook, and supplemental resources.
This website was created in direct response to inquiries from applicants, pre-health advisors, and admissions officers who asked the AAMC for help in better understanding how to demonstrate aptitude in the core competencies, which many medical schools have identified as important for entering medical students. Site materials are based on the 15 Core Competencies for Entering Medical Students that have been endorsed by the AAMC Group on Student Affairs (GSA) Committee on Admissions (COA). Along with student profiles, we have included a workbook with sections that clarify the individual core competencies, describe the individual components of the medical school application, demonstrate how an applicant’s responses inform admissions officers about an applicant’s proficiency level in different competencies, and help generate ideas about how to show experience and develop proficiency in the various competencies.

5 Things I Wish I knew as a Premed about How to Pay for Medical School

Medical school is expensive. In fact, according to AAMC Medical Student Education: Debt, Costs and Loan Repayment Fact Card 2016, a majority of students, nationally, leave medical school with at least $100,000 in debt; nearly half leave with $200,000 or more. As a premed student, Kevin Keith, now a third-year medical student at the Medical University of South Carolina, remembers being overwhelmed by the cost of medical school. Now well into his medical education, he has come to realize that paying for medical school is manageable. To help you identify loans, budget wisely, and even find scholarships and grants, Kevin shares his five tips he wishes he would've known as a premed.

Health Professions Virtual Career Fair

PAEA is pleased to announce our involvement in the second annual Health Professions Week (#HPW2017) which will take place on November 6-10, 2017. We are very excited to engage young people in learning more about the opportunities available through a career as a physician assistant, and we would like to invite you to participate.
Health Professions Week is a first-of- its-kind inter-professional virtual recruitment event that boasts an exciting week-long series of activities — mostly online — for high school and college students interested in learning more about careers in the health professions. It’s completely free for students, counselors, parents, and advisors.
HPW is intended to increase awareness of the 20 participating health professions and is inspired by a vision of collaborative practice as key to the safe, high quality, accessible, inclusive, and patient-centered care. In the inaugural 2016 event, over 4,000 students from across the U.S. joined in the virtual fairs, online treasure hunts, interview days, and community connect days. This year, we anticipate a 50% increase in attendance.
We invite you to join us online and during the virtual fair event during Health Professions Week, November 6-10, 2017. Register here

Lanai
Lanai Culture and Heritage Center Volunteer

The vision and mission of the Lāna‘i Culture & Heritage Center (Lāna‘i CHC) includes, but is not limited to the collection, preservations and display artifacts of traditional, cultural, historical and artistic value to the people and island of Lāna‘i—representative of Lāna‘i’s Hawaiian culture, ranching era, diverse populations who built the pineapple plantation and community on the island, and natural history.

Our programs seek to educate and cultivate interest and knowledge in the history, folklore, culture, customs and practices of Lāna‘i. Identify and recommend cultural and natural landscapes and archaeological sites of historical importance and interest to Lāna‘i for preservation, and to determine levels of access and interpretation. Our goal is to provide long-time island families, youth, new residents, visitors, business interests and all interested parties with a sense of place and cultural attachment to the unique cultural and natural histories of Lāna‘i. See here: https://www.lanaichc.org/volunteers.html
