Clinical Innovations

2004/

Implementation of bedside Patient identification boards

-Edendale Hospital, Pietermaritzburg, South Africa

During a 2 month international clinical elective in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa, I implemented patient identification cards at each bedside on internal medicine wards. During the time of my stay in Edendale hospital, patients were often not able to be identified as they were comatose and non-verbal and their clinical documentation was often not correctly assigned. The example of these dry-marker erasable patient/bed ID cards was widely adopted in the hospital and led to vast improvement of workflow and decrease in medical errors at this teaching hospital.

Report of Technological and Other Scientific Innovations

2003/”Cytotoxic T cell epitopes of HIV-1”

Patent: Altfeld M, Addo M, Yu X, Walker B, inventors:

“Cytotoxic T cell epitopes of HIV-1.” US Serial NO: 10/442,909.2003 May 20

During my postdoc with Dr. Bruce Walker we identified several novel CTL epitopes for potential HIV vaccination or immunotherapeutic intervention, some of which are included in this patent
