Notes: DCW, located in Patiala, Punjab has been rebuilding WDM2s that are 18-21 years old and due for their 3rd periodic overhaul (POH). Such locos are given an “R” suffix to their running number. DCW has also been rebuilding some engines and at the same time upgrading them to WDM2Cs. They have a different engine block, larger ABB turbocharger and different expressor with a sophisticated air dryer. These locos have a Woodward governor and idle more evenly. They have reduced emissions during acceleration; the Woodward governor accelerates the engine slowly thus preventing the turbo from lagging in the supply of air.


The WDM2C rebuilds look like regular WDM2s (rather than the 14000 series WDM2Cs) except for a bulge in one of the hood doors. See http://uk.photos.yahoo.com/zubindotivala for an example. The bulge hides a centrifugal fuel filter, which was displaced by larger aftercoolers required by the GE turbocharger. Apparently there was no other place to mount it so the door is curved around the cylindrical item. There are some differences in the roof line and the exhaust stack is different (flatter and broader) because of the GE turbo.
WDM2s have a bronze shell lined with babbit metal as suspension bearings for the traction motors. Thay are oil-lubricated through wicks by capillary action. Failure of suspension bearings has been the bugbear and DCW replaces the original design with roller-bearing suspension. The conventional 4906-BZ traction motor has a plain suspension bearing. This tube is used to suspend the traction motor and this plain bearing is located in the 'suspension tube'. The motor moves slightly around this tube as the wheel sets move in their suspensions. The DCW reworks these older motors to new type 4907-AZ motor has roller bearings with the inherent advantages. During the conversion, the new coils and pole pieces are also installed.
The sandboxes are also relocated from the body to the bogies.
The cost of the rebuild is about 1.5 crores (£215,000) per locomotive.
