Sunday, December 13, 1863

Transcribed by Pam Jones

Southwest Times Newspaper, Wednesday, June 10, 1928

F. W. MORTON, for 16 years commonwealth's attorney for Pulaski county and nestor of the local bar, died Friday night at 8:30 o'clock in Richmond hospital, where he had been treated for two months. No immediate relatives being in the city, the tidings came to friends through a message to the Southwest Times. Though to be expected, the news of Mr. MORTON'S passing came as a distinct shock to his many friends of the city and county who knew he was ill but who had not been advised that he was extremis.

The body will reach Pulaski this morning on the No. 41. Funeral services will be held at 4:30 o'clock this afternoon from the Presbyterian church with the Rev. Robert King the pastor in charge. Burial will be with Masonic honors, a special communication of the lodge being called at 4 o'clock to attend.

Francis William MORTON was the son of Capt. John Blair and Annie Rice BOWMAN MORTON and was born December 13, 1863 at High Hill, Cumberland county, the home place overlooking the Appomattox river, where his earlier years were spent. His mother and family came to Pulaski county in 1868, following the death of Captain MORTON, and in 1872 Mrs. MORTON married Judge Isaac HUDSON of Dublin, judge of Pulaski county court under old county court regime.

Mr. MORTON was prepared for college in a school conducted by Professor George Walker. He entered Hampton-Sidney College from which he graduated in the class of 1886. Following his graduation, he taught for several years in a boys' school at Lexington, and later accepted a chair in South West University, Clarkesville, Tennessee.
