PALMER




MILES, Zora Palmer, 83, of Riner (Rogers Community), died Friday night, January 23, 1998 at Montgomery Regional Hospital. She was preceded in death by her husband, Wendell H. Miles and two brothers, Charles Edward Palmer and Albert Sidney Palmer. Surviving are sisters-in-law, Linda Bell Palmer and Ann Underwood Palmer; a brother-in-law, Whitlow Miles and his wife, Allie; special friends, Molly McGuyer and Sandra Bond. The funeral will be 1 p.m. Monday from the Richardson-Horne Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Don Peters and the Rev. Layne Board. Interment will follow in Sunset Cemetery in Christiansburg. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to the Christiansburg Rescue Squad, Box 176, Christiansburg, Va. 24073. Friends may call from noon until 5 p.m. Sunday at the Richardson-Horne Funeral Home. The family will receive friends there Sunday from 2 to 5 p.m. There will be no evening visitation.

FUNERAL HELD FOR JOHN C. MILLER

Funeral services for John Cogal MILLER who died Monday, were held Wednesday afternoon at the family residence in the county with the Rev. Geo. PHELPS pastor of the Christian Church in charge. Mr. MILLER was one of the sons of William and Parthenia WILSON MILLER of the county. He was twice married, his first wife was Miss Rhoda ALLISON not being any children to this union. His second wife was Mrs. Nannie SIMON DUNLAP of Rockbridge County. There were five children born to this union, Rudolph C., Jane, Mrs. C.A. READ, William H and Florence, all of this county.


Mr. MILLER was a well known farmer, having been born and reared on the farm on which he died. He had been in declining health for several years but only bedfast for a few hours, making his death come as a shock to his relatives and friends. He had been a member of the Christian Church since childhood.
Flower bearers were: Misses Lizzie and Ola GUNN, Maude JOHNSON, Stella MILLER, C.C. OWENS, Frank SURRATT, Gene MILLER, C.C. HARVEY. Active pallbearers; William GOTT, A.C. GOTT, George MILLER, Charlie MILLER, Frank SURRATT, Charles William OWENS, J.F. HALL, Son WHITAKER. Honorary pallbearers; C.M. DUNLAP, K.D. KERBEY, Dr. N. FARLEY, M.C. GILMORE, H.C. PATTERSON, J.F. MORRIS, Howe FARMER, R.C. GUNN, Charlie HARVEY, Seldom RUNION.
Those out of the county attending the funeral were Mr. & Mrs. C.C. HARVEY and daughter Caroline of Princeton, WVA, Mrs. G.M. MORRIS and son Vernon, Miss Beryl ECKLES of Roanoke, C.M. BUFORD MILLER PASSES BEYOND

Prominent Dublin Farmer Had Been In Ill Health For Some Time

Buford Blackburn MILLER, 45, prominent farmer of Dublin, died today at Pulaski hospital. Mr. Miller, who has been a mail carrier on route No. 1 out of Dublin for 15 years, had been in ill health for the past four years.

Mr. Miller was a member of the Episcopal church and the Dublin lodge of Masons.

He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Elizabeth KING MILLER, and one daughter, Mildred, of the home; seven sisters, Miss Daisy MILLER, of the Pulaski hospital staff, and Mrs. James BROWN, also of Pulaski; Miss Sally MILLER, Miss Margaret MILLER, Miss Nellie MILLER, and Mrs. David HARMAN, all of Dublin; Mrs. William HOPPER, of Leeksville, N. C.; and one brother, W. K. MILLER, Jr., of Dublin.



Funeral services will be held tomorrow at 4 p. m. at the Dublin Presbyterian church with Rev. C. W. Sydnor, of Pulaski in charge. Special Masonic services will be conducted at the grave.

James Edward "Jiggs" Miller, 78, of 4420 Refuge Lane, Draper, passed away Thursday evening, May 15, 2003, at the Richfield Nursing Center, Salem. Born August 1, 1924 in Barren Springs, he was the son the late Robert Thoams Miller and Suel Miller. His wife, Mary Ellen Hall Miller, two sisters, Anneta Penn and Rosie Trueheart, and one brother, Leon Miller, also preceded him in death. He was a member of the Slaughter's Chapel United Methodist Church. He was retired from the N & W Railroad and a member of the Draper Volunteer Fire Department, the Ruritan Club, and the Chamber of Commerce. Surviving are daughters and son-in-law, Jessie Miller Whorley and Otis Larry Whorley, Jr. of Roanoke, Charlotte Evelyn Miller of Roanoke; grandson, Otis Larry Whorley III (Tre') of Roanoke; sister, Virginia Lewis and husband Walter Lewis of Pulaski; brother, Robert Miller of Pulaski, special neice, Susie Penn of Pulaski. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Bower Funeral Chapel, Pulaski, with the Rev. C.G. Slaughter officiating. Interment will follow at the Highland Memory Gardens, Dublin. The family will receive friends from 1 p.m. until the time of service. Bower Funeral Chapel, Pulaski, is handling arrangements. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Slaughter Chapel Church or Draper Volunteer Fire Department.

MILLER, Edna Mozelle Stroupe, 87, of Wytheville, passed from this life on Sunday, April 13, 2003 at Roanoke Memorial Hospital. She is preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Lula Stroupe, two brothers, Cecil Stroupe and Raymond Stroupe and son-in-law, Charles Smith. She was a charter member of West End United Methodist Church. She is survived by her husband of 62 years, Dean Odell Miller; daughter, Betty Miller Smith of Wytheville; son, Robert Miller of Martinsville; grandson and wife, Todd and Julia Smith of Roanoke; granddaughters, Megan Miller of Harrisonburg, Va., Blair Miller of Midlothian, Va.; great-grandchildren, Hunter and Erin Smith of Roanoke; sisters, Pauline Cregger of Wytheville, Estelle Jackson of Pulaski; brother, Vance Stroupe of Pulaski; sisters-in-law, Joan Burchett of Wytheville, Opal Cassell of Rural Retreat, Mabel Sult of Wytheville; brothers-in-law, David Miller of Rural Retreat, James Chapman of Wytheville; special niece, Beulah Sult; and many other nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, April 15, 2003 at 11 a.m. at the Barnett Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Steve Johnson officiating. Interment will follow in the West End Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the Barnett Funeral Home from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday or at the home of Betty Miller Smith at any time. The family suggests that contributions be made to the Wythe County Rescue Squad, P. O. Box 389, Wytheville, Va. 24382. Barnett Funeral Home, Wytheville, is in charge of arrangements.

MILLER, Maxine Gay, 51, of Newport died Sunday morning, February 28,
1999, in Montgomery Regional Hospital after a long illness. Born in
Montgomery County on March 14, 1947, she was a daughter of Nellie Howard
Wilson and the late Charlie Rouster Howard. She was an avid racing fan,
ever supporting Melvin Smith in his efforts. A brother, Early Ray Howard,
and a sister, Bertha Virginia Howard, preceded her in death. Surviving are
her mother, Nellie Jewell Howard Wilson of Floyd; her dearly beloved
special friend of 18 years, Melvin Smith of Newport, who will greatly miss
her; two daughters, Naomi Jean Hurley of Elliston and Angela Marlene
Hoilman of Pilot; two granddaughters, Trista Lynn Clark and Travis Jordon
Hurley; a brother, Charlie P. Howard of Riner; six sisters, Stella M. Kozar
of Christiansburg, Melba J. Kozar of Riner, Lucy H. Hale of Floyd, Annie F.
Caldwell, Shirley T. Reed, and Sandra H. Gibson, all of Riner. Funeral
services will be conducted Wednesday at 2 p.m. in the Christiansburg
Wesleyan Church off Mud Pike Road with the Rev. David Hurd, the Rev. Noah
Underwood, the Rev. Eddie Kendall, and the Rev. Wallace Yopp officiating.
Burial will follow in the Howard Cemetery at Riner. The family will receive
friends at the Kendall Funeral Home at 605 Snidow Street in Pembroke on
Tuesday evening from 6 to 9 p.m.

Robert Lee Mills, 52, of 2681 Kirby Road, Draper, passed away Friday, May 30, 2003 at his home. Born Feb. 18, 1951 in Radford, he is the son of Dorothy Marie Graham Mills. He was preceded in death by his father, Tommy Mills. He was employed at the Lynchburg Foundry in Radford with over 30 years of service. Surviving are daughter and son-in-law, Stacey Mills Stephens and Terry Stephens of Dublin; mother, Dorothy Marie Graham Mills of Dublin; sister, Becky Hale of Dublin; special uncle, Elvin Graham of Dublin; and special pet and companion, "Apache." Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Bower Funeral Chapel of Pulaski with Evangelist Jack Harris officiating. Interment will follow at Highland Memory Gardens in Dublin. Visitation will be Monday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at Bower Funeral Chapel, Pulaski. The family will be meeting at the home of his mother, Dorothy Mills, 341 Jordan Street, Dublin. Bower Funeral Chapel, Pulaski, is handling arrangements for the family.

MILLS, William Lee, Sr., 79, of Radford, died Thursday, April 6, 2000 in Carilion New River Valley Medical Center. Surviving are a son, William Mills, Jr. of Christiansburg; a daughter, Barbara M. Dobbins of Missouri; and a stepson, Kermit Roberts of Radford; two brothers, Harman Mills, Radford, Clarence Mills, Snowville; and a sister, Elizabeth Hinkley of New River. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, April 8, 2000 at the DeVilbiss Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Tom Oliphant officiating. Interment will follow in Rockford Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, April 7, 2000 at the DeVilbiss Funeral Home, Radford.

MILTON, Sue Howard, 64, of Roanoke, passed away Monday, January 8, 2001. She
was preceded in death by her husband, Robert G. Milton, Jr. and her father,
Frank A. Howard. Sue was born on November 30, 1935 in Pulaski. She attended
Longwood College and worked at General Electric Company before dedicating
her life to being a homemaker. Sue lived in Gainesville, Ga. for twelve
years before moving back to Roanoke in 1995. She was an active member of
Salem Presbyterian Church. Surviving family include her mother, Mrs. Lucille
R. Howard of Wytheville; two daughters and sons-in-law, Beth and Bob Jordan
of Roanoke, Robin and Jeff Loggins of Gainesville, Ga.; five grandchildren,
Clint, Sam, and Emma Jordan of Roanoke, Palmer and Anderson Loggins of
Gainesville, Ga.; a sister-in-law and her husband, Joyce and Paul Rotenberry
of Roanoke; and two nieces, Karen Bischof and Kelly Wittkoff, both of
Richmond. The family would like to thank all her dear friends that have
loved and supported Sue during her illness. A special thank you to her
caregivers, including Angel Legans, Tonya Saunders, Bonnie Poff, Phyllis
Byrd; Good Samaritan Hospice Staff, Kelly Beck, and Kathy Moses. A memorial
service will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday from Salem Presbyterian Church
(North Market Street, Salem) with the Rev. Dean Lindsey and the Rev. Quigg
Lawrence officiating. The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m.
Wednesday at Oakey's Roanoke Chapel. In lieu of flowers, the family requests
memorials be made to the Salem Presbyterian Church Building Fund (P.O. Box
536, Salem, Va. 24153) or Good Samaritan Hospice (3825 Electric Road,

MINNICK, James Robert, 63, of Radford, passed away Saturday, February 1, 2003, at his home. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army. Survivors include two daughters, Stormy Minnick of Pulaski and Wendy Minnick of Christiansburg; one son, James Robert Minnick, Jr. of Akron, Ohio; three brothers, Jerry Buford Minnick, John Woodrow Minnick and William Franklin Minnick, all of Radford; one sister, Pansy M. Robinson of Radford; and five grandchildren. Memorial services will be held Wednesday February 5, 2003, at 11 a.m., at the Mullins Funeral Home in Radford. Funeral services for Dorothy Whitt Mitchell, 28, who died Sunday, were held Tuesday from the Seventh Day Adventist church with the pastor, Elder W. H. Coffman, in charge of the services assisted by Elder R. F. Correia. Burial followed in the Newbern cemetery.
She is survived by her husband, Claude L. Mitchell; three sons, Sammy, Elwood, and Daryl Mitchell; her mother, Mrs. D. B. Whitt; six sisters, Mrs. Lee Morris, Mrs. Holbert Mitchell, Mrs. Charles Farmer,
Misses Naomi and Dayna Whitt, all of Pulaski, and Mrs. Earl Williams, Richmond.
Also five brothers, David Whitt, Pipestem, W.Va., Billy, Bobby, Richard and Jerry Whitt, all of Pulaski; her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. S. W. Covey, Pulaski.
Active pallbearers were: Olin and Earl Akers, Fred Goad, Claude and Hubert Finn and George Covey, all her cousins.

Henry H. Mitchell. Mrs. Mitchell was retired from the Dietary Dept. of
Radford Community Hospital. A loving homemaker, wife and mother, she is
survived by her sons and daughter, Lee Mitchell of Port St. Lucie, Fla., Ann
Rowell and Dean Mitchell, both of Roanoke; two grandchildren, David Martin
and Linda Mitchell; a devoted brother, Sterling Quesenberry and his wife
Barbara Quesenberry of Snowville; three sisters, Ruby Evans of Fla., Orpha
Sadler of S.C., Macie Stabnow of Fla.; numerous nieces and nephews; and a
special friend, Virginia Topper. The family wishes to thank the neighbors at

Florence May Mitchell, 90, passed away Tuesday, May 20, 2003 at her home in Radford.She was a member of Central United Methodist Church and a retired bookkeeper for D. G. Mouldings. She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles Henderson and Minnie Cullop Mitchell. Survivors include her sister, Frankie Clarke of Augusta, SC; several nieces and nephews. Graveside services will be held Thursday, May 22, at 11:00 a.m. at the Round Hill Cemetery in Marion. The family will greet friends at the service. There will be no visitation at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to the Central United Methodist Church Choir & Music Ministry. Arrangements are being handled by Mullins Funeral Home & Crematory in Radford.
