Royal 8vo gilt-stamped burgundy cloth. 394pp.. Illustrated abundantly with small portraits & full page images; also photos of documents. This book is an incredibly extensive listing of name of soldiers from Racine County, Wisconsin, who served in the Civil War and the Spanish-American War. The title page continues: "A Pioneer Publication Undertaken in the interest of Patriotic Americans in Racine County, Wisconsin." And further, "A home-made book, about home people, for home people." First half of the book is composed of continuous short, linked narratives describing the situation, conditions in Racine Co., politics, resisters to the war & to Lincoln, their punishment, etc. There are multiple lists of people, such as those who contributed to the Patriotic Fund, & how much they gave; prisoners of war; reunion of regiments. Information on Camp Utley, Soldiers' Aid Societies, etc.. The last two-thirds of the volume consists of multiple rosters from both wars, including unit assignment, rank, where they were from, & when mustered out. Also lists of the dead. Lists of Commanders-in-Chief of the of the GAR Encampments according to state, date of election, & location of Encampments. Having spent this much ink in trying to describe this volume, let me say that it would take all night to list the items therein. One two pages, the name of Heinrich Schelp is circled (Civil War roster, & prisoner of war list). Condition: Good+. One page has badly wrinked corner. Number 64 of 100 copies. 1/4 calf & marbled boards; silk ribbon. 58pp. Elegantly illustrated with page border vignette drawings by Lee reproduced in facsimile & in original size from the original journal, & by finely printed appliqués of pertinent original documents/letters related to Lee's enterprise. One of the first, if not the first, fine print letter press books in Vancouver, although it was the 3rd product by the Reids. Laid in double-side 1961 T.L.S. from Robert Reid to a collector containing info on some projects & the recipient's collection. It is signed by Reid on the recto & initialed by him on the verso. Lee's account of supplying beef to the Klondike gold-seekers with cattle from central British Columbia is fascinating. Fine condition; no dj as issued. The trade edition (1960) is titled: Klondike Cattle Drive. This is one of the finest books I have ever offered; I offered another copy in 1992 which sold quickly. Whale 802. Fine. Hardcover. Portraits of Principal Participants, Military and Civil; Famous Forts; Pathetic Episodes, Etc., Etc. the whole forming An Authentic Pictorial History of the War, by such well-known artists as (extended list) with an introduction by Joseph B. Carr, Major-General. Condition: Re-backed with almost the entire original cloth retained over a new spine -- small loss to original cloth at spine ends. Otherwise original covers and endpapers with new binding that has tightened the text block and made this copy ready for another one hundred years of reference and enjoyment to the collector and researcher. Some pages have a few very short edge tears. There are four sequential leaves that inexplicably have chipped edges but the chips do not affect the images or text on those pages. There is a very handsomely written ownership signature & date in broad pencil on a blank preliminary page, "April 1, 1895 William K. Hayes Bridgeport, Conn." Gilt on the cover is very good. There is some general wear & the right edge area of the front cover is darker than the rest of the cover. The rear cover has considerable old moisture stain/bleaching, and thus is compromised visually, but is clean and stable. Very scarce now in the first edition. Very Good. Hardcover. (#0811097) $465.75
