Later, in college, "I settled into the library and began to read. ... I learned something amazing. History was made up of people. ... I got swept away by the people, and eventually, the dates and events began to fall into place." When he began to teach, he began to introduce students to the "colorful individuals... who made Texas into what it now is." "The fifteen Texans included in this volume were non-conformists willing to flout the traditional norms of their day..." Kownslar has selected various sources for his biographical treatment of the following Texans: David Crockett, Lorenzo de Zavala, Pamela Mann, "Bigfoot" Wallace, Sam Houston, Elisabet (sic?)
