A product is everything that one can receive in a change. A product may be a commodity, a service, or an idea. A commodity is a real, physical thing that we can touch. A service is the result of applying human or mechanical effort to a person or thing. Basically, a service is a change we pay others to make something for us. An idea may take the form of philosophies, lessons, concepts, or advice. Often, ideas are included with a commodity or service. Thus, we can buy a book (a commodity) that provides ideas on how to study economics, and with its help (service) we may prepare ourselves for seminars.
The definition of the term “product” is based on the concept of an exchange. In a purchase, the thing that is exchanged for the product is money - an amount of money equal to the price of the product. When the product is a commodity, the price may include such services as delivery, installation, warranties, and training. A commodity with such services is not the same product as the commodity without them. In other words, sellers set a price for a particular “package” of goods, services and ideas. When the makeup of that package changes the price should change as well.
Products can be grouped into two general categories - consumer and industrial. A product purchased to satisfy personal and family needs is a consumer product. A product bought for use in a firm’s operations or to make other goods is an industrial product. A single item can be both a consumer and an industrial product. For example, a broom is a consumer product if it is used in someone’s home. However, the same broom is an industrial product if it is used in the maintenance of a business.
