How do we respect the humanity/rationality in others → By not interfering with their capacity for rational choice and also promoting their capacity for rational choice
1. By not interfering with their capacity for rational thought and choice
(strict and negative)
Specific duties → can’t kill, coerce (forcing someone to do something, manipulate (psychological pitch to Peoples emotion and try to subvert their reason their reason can’t function interfering with their rationality, deceive (giving wrong info or withholding info fine print, complicated vocabulary)
2. By promoting their capacity for rational thought and choice
(broad and positive)
Specific duties → help children/under-privilege cultivate rationality help the underprivileged with basic necessities, so that they can begin focusing on cultivating their rationality

• Potential to confuse what is popular with what is ethical
• What goes on the front page is determined by profit Legal rule if it is illegal, don’t do it
• It can be unethical and still legal and illegal and ethical (ie, apartheid)
• What is defined as legal is not universal can vary depending on where you live Fear of punishment rule If you might get caught and punished, don’t do it
• Compliance is an issue if you know you aren’t going to get caught Golden rule do unto others
• which others everyone has difference preferences Rule of enlightened self-interest: don’t arm others, because it may comeback to haunt you. (karma)
• fear you may cross path with them later but if you are pretty certain you won’t see them again, then you can do what you want. Commonsense rule just use your commonsense in ethical decision-making
• Everyone’s commonsense is different


• You don’t know where someone’s intuition is derived from
