Ethics PHIL 2203 NOTES

Why is morality all about keeping agreements
Society is a web of interlocking agreements
Thus, the function of moral principles (ie, keep your promises) is to support ongoing cooperative arrangements
that constitute human society.
When agreements fall apart, nobody trusts anyone, society falls apart.
CMs will do better in life, assuming

1. They can recognize each other, such that they can team up and cooperate.
2. They can recognize competitors, such that they can avoid teaming up with them and getting screwed.
How do we know whether someone will cooperate with us, if we try to cooperate with them?
