Straightforward Maximizers (SMs) competitors They make agreements that maximize their expected utility. They keep only the agreements that will maximize their utility, and break agreements if doing so will maximize their utility. always taking actions that will benefit them Always trying to figure out how to get ahead what they need to increase their utility.
Constrained Maximizers (CMs) cooperators Not unbridled utility maximizers; they will make agreements that will maximize their expected utility, and keep commitments/agreements they’ve already made, even if breaking the agreement would be more beneficial. If they made an agreement, they will follow through (whether it is highly profitable or not)
