Ethics PHIL 2203 NOTES
Objection: Prisoners dilemma is unrealistic

→ He’s not trying to mirror human behaviour as a whole just a certain aspect of it. (the notion of cooperation) It does a nice job of capturing one aspect of business dealings – those transactions in which an agreement to act at a later date is involved
SM’s chose to act in a very straightforward manner – choosing to maximize their wealth whenever possible. Whenever he thinks he can getaway with it, he will defect from his agreement and provide a partial or late payment to the vendor and undoubtedly apologize profusely about circumstances beyond his control. They rationalize (backwards justify) their actions. Almost any interaction between parties in business is leading to some joint strategy – some sort of cooperation. It can be as big as the firm itself, involving cooperation between management, shareholders, and employees or it can be as small as a simple sale of furniture, involving the exchange of some product for some money.
Gauthier’s theory applies to all business transactions, exception perhaps those involving simultaneous exchange – eg, a customer handing over a dollar in return fora banana.
