Olive M. Treadwell, a lifelong and prominent resident of Acton. Mrs. Treadwell served the Acton community on many levels and was a member of numerous civic and historical organizations. She served on the building committee for the Acton School and she was a member of the Acton School Board for many years. She remembered fallen veterans by putting flags on their graves for Memorial Day for 25 years and was an active member in the Acton Civil War Veterans Memorial Committee and the Korean War and Vietnam War monument committees. Mrs. Treadwell held the position of Deputy Town Clerk and served as the Interim Town Clerk in 1986. This dedicated and caring woman has been a role model for family life and citizenship. Sylvia Fogarty, of New Vineyard, in whose honor the annual town report is being dedicated. Andrew Phillips, Sr., of Avon, who is being saluted by the town with a special dedication in the annual town report. A veteran of the United States Army, he served in the Medical Corps in World War II and in the 5th Engineer Combat Battalion during the Korean Conflict. Upon his discharge, he quietly returned to his hometown where he raised his family. The Town has chosen to honor and thank this humble and unassuming man who received 9 medals during his honorable years of service to our country. the University of Maine Teaching Fellows program for Kindergarten to grade 12, which has been chosen to receive the regional Higher Education Excellence Award by the New England Board of Higher Education. The program is led by University of Maine ecologist Susan Brawley and is funded by the National Science Foundation. The program provides fellowships to outstanding graduate students in sciences, technology, engineering and mathematics. As part of their fellowships, students collaborate with public school teachers to bring more hands-on, inquiry-based science to kindergarten to grade 12 students in central and eastern Maine. Don Robataille, of Lewiston, who completed the daunting challenge of bicycling across America at 70 years of age. He continues to do long-distance bicycling, and is an inspiration for young and old. Married for 50 years and father of 5 children, Mr. Robataille worked for the Coca Cola Company for 35 years before retiring to realize his dream. Ruth Farabee Clark, of Durham, beloved wife, mother, friend, actress and inspiration to all who knew her by her well-earned nickname, "Lady Sunshine." Diagnosed with juvenile diabetes at age 11, for 40 years she proudly devoted her professional and personal energies to education and advocacy about diabetes research, organ donation and conquering chronic illness with the force of faith, joy and life. A 4th-generation Floridian, she graduated from Florida Southern College in 1972 and was named its Distinguished Alumni for Service to Humanity in 1985. In 1983 she was chosen Outstanding Young Woman of the Year by the Greater Portland Women Jaycees. An officer of the Maine Center for the Blind and Visually Impaired, she was a founding trustee of the National Kidney Foundation of Maine and served as its president from 1990-1993. An enthusiastic athlete, she attended the United States and World Transplant Olympics, earning 39 medals in swimming, shot put and running. A gifted singer and actress, she performed in scores of Maine theater productions and served on the Board of Lyric Music Theater. As one of the first United States recipients of a successful live donor kidney transplant in 1979, she entranced audiences across the United States and Canada with her presentations about life, faith and family. the Reverend Chandler M. Holmes, formerly of North Waterboro, who served as pastor at North Waterboro Community Church from 1970 until his retirement in 1997. His father had served as pastor at the same church. Reverend Holmes was a respected member of several organizations, including the Masons and volunteer fire departments. Jane Gray Muskie, widow of former Maine governor, senator and national Secretary of State Edmund S. Muskie, at her home outside Washington, D.C., on Christmas morning. Jane Gray was born and raised in Waterville, where she met young attorney Edmund S. Muskie. They married in 1948 while he was a member of the Maine House of Representatives. In 1954, Mr. Muskie was elected Governor of Maine, and as Maine's First Lady, Mrs. Muskie was the first in memory to have a child while living at the Blaine House. The Muskies moved to Washington, D.C., in 1958, when Edmund Muskie won the United States Senate seat he would hold until President Carter named him Secretary of State in 1980. Mrs. Muskie was devoted to her husband and five children, raising her family in Bethesda, Maryland, and Kennebunk, Maine. She was talented, charming and well respected, and she was one of her husband's greatest political assets. Mrs. Jane Muskie will be buried next to her husband, who predeceased her in 1996, at Arlington National Cemetery. She will be greatly missed by her loving family, her many friends and the citizens of the State of Maine; (IN MEMORIAM) (HLS 138)
