Arthur M. Griffiths, of Monmouth, beloved husband of Lois, his wife of 56 years. Arthur's career took many different paths, including being headmaster at Limington Academy, proprietor of a feed store in Newport and a broadcaster at radio and television stations in Waterville and Lewiston. For 19 years he served as Director of the News Bureau at Bates College. He pursued a career in printing and publications at Twin City Printery in Lewiston and later founded the Monmouth Press. He was a well-known and caring citizen who took an active role in civic affairs, including the school committee, planning board, budget committee and appeals board. A gifted public speaker and accomplished parliamentarian, he enjoyed presiding over special town meetings, the Cochnewagan Agricultural Association, the Arnold Expedition Historical Society, the Maine Old Cemetery Association, the Monmouth Historical Society and he also served on the board of trustees of the Maine Genealogical Society. Arthur was a 32nd degree Mason and was Past Master of Rabboni Lodge #150 in Lewiston. He was editor of "The Maine Mason" and president of the Androscoggin Valley Square and Compass Club for many years. He pursued many interests including woodworking, photography, computers and sailing. Arthur proudly devoted his professional and personal energies for the betterment of citizens in his community and State and he will be fondly remembered by his loving family and many friends; (IN MEMORIAM) (HLS 365)
Julian Beale III, of Belgrade, who has distinguished himself as an advocate of firearm safety for youth in the Augusta area. He founded the Capital City Junior Rifle Program 30 years ago. Mr. Beale is a volunteer coach for the rifle teams of Cony High School and Gardiner High School. He is the volunteer coordinator of the rifle matches for the Junior Olympics in Colorado and also serves as volunteer range director for the National Smallbore Matches in Ohio. Mr. Beale will be conducting his 30th awards banquet for his students at the Calumet Club on April 16th. Sergeant First Class James R. Rancourt, of Sabattus, on completion of his recent mission with the 133rd Combat Engineer Battalion. SFC Rancourt recently returned home after a one-year deployment to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. He served in Mosul, Iraq, among many other areas, constructing bridges, roads, schools and much of the infrastructure important to the rebuilding of the country. We commend SFC Rancourt for his exemplary performance and extend our gratitude for his service and dedication to his State and Country. Walter Leon Stevens, of Georgetown, a Veteran of the United States Army and fisherman for many years. He was an enthusiastic pioneer of new ideas and technology in his occupation. Health problems eventually forced his complete retirement but Walter continued being a folk historian for the Georgetown area. Whether sharing his knowledge or fishing gear, he was always generous, often helping others start their own fishing careers. Walter, who will be remembered for his unflagging good cheer and deep love for family, will be missed by his family and friends; (IN MEMORIAM) (HLS 368)
Edward R. DiBiase, a lifelong resident of Portland. He was employed in construction for many years, working for Aceto Construction Company and Romano Construction Company as a cement worker. His jobs included underground sewage lines and bridges throughout the city. He later served as a crossing guide, guiding Baxter Elementary School students to safety for nearly a decade. He loved the children who loved him in return and would call him "Grampy" when they met in the community. Mr. DiBiase dearly loved his family, the Red Sox and vegetable gardening. James H. White, of Orono, who has been named Maine's 2005 Middle Level Principal of the Year by the Maine Principals' Association. This award recognizes one middle level principal annually for effective leadership, a commitment to academic excellence, high expectations and standards, creating a culture that supports learning, contributions to the profession and community service. As principal of Center Drive School in Orrington, Mr. White has earned a reputation of having established a true learning community. During his 20 years at the school, he has implemented high academic, behavioral and social standards. Mr. White is a member of the Maine Principals' Association professional development and retirement committees and is also a member of the New England League of Middle Schools, the Maine Association of Middle Level Education and is President of the Penobscot Valley Middle League. He is a member of the Northeast Regional Principals' Association and the Hancock County Administrative Support System.
