AB - ABSTRACT: Twenty-seven species of ostracodes are listed from the Tubara formation, south of the village of Tubara, near Barranquilla, Colombia. Twenty-one of the species have been described before from the Caribbean Miocene. Two new species are described, Cytherelloidea impages and Isocythereis? redmondi. The distribution of ostracodes suggests correlation with the upper Miocene of Trinidad and northeastern Venezuela.

AB - ABSTRACT: Data on the name and location, the form and structure, and the activity of eleven volcanoes in Colombia, nine volcanoes in Ecuador, and four volcanoes in Peru are presented. Of the eleven in Colombia, seven have been reported to be active, and four are in a fumarolic stage. The erupted rocks consist mainly of andesites and dacites. The volcanoes reported for Ecuador are those for which there has been recorded activity. Some 50 volcanoes have been cited in the literature for the region. Several are extinct and one has been proven not to be a volcano. In certain cases, mud flows caused by earthquakes have erroneously been attributed to volcanism. The four Peruvian volcanoes with recorded eruptive activity are El Misti, now in a stage of high-temperature fumarolic activity; Ubinas, intermittently active throughout historic time; Juaynaputina, for which an eruption in 1600 is the only record; and Tutupaca, now in a solfataric stage. All are stratovolcanoes. Data on the petrography of various volcanic rock types (with some chemical analyses) and bibliographic references are included.

AB - ABSTRACT: Papers of the 1963 Dakar micropaleontology symposium are summarized to indicate the status of micropaleontologic and palynologic investigations in west African littoral basins, and the nature and extent of the problems involved. The microfauna of these basins include many forms known elsewhere in the world, particularly planktonic forms, but only rarely are they homologous to those of Europe. Their affinities, at times remarkable, are principally with those of Mesogean basins in north Africa, Spain, Italy, and Egypt, and those in the southern United States, Mexico, Venezuela, and Colombia. Stratigraphic correlations are enhanced by the prevalence of macrofauna, particularly ammonites, resulting in very accurate dating of many horizons. A major problem is determination of the Jurassic-Cretaceous contact, as a result of lack of ammonites in this part of the column. Palynologic study, in an early stage in west Africa, promises excellent results. Most European angiosperms are unknown in west Africa, and affinities are particularly with forms in South America and Australia.

AB - ABSTRACT: The nine countries of South America long established as petroleum producers collectively yielded 4,288,817 barrels per day in 1965, a total of 1,565,417,000 barrels for the year. This was an increase of 2.2 percent over 1964, and marked the seventh consecutive year of increase. The amount was 14 percent of total world production for 1965. Venezuela ranked first among the nine, with 81 percent of the total for 1965, and it continues to be the world's largest exporter of petroleum. Argentina, Colombia, and Trinidad ranked, respectively, second, third, and fourth in 1965 production. Brazil and Peru ranked respectively fifth and sixth in 1965 totals. Geologic and geophysical exploration increased slightly over 1964. Success attended 127 of 364 exploratory wells, and Brazil's Miranga field may be the year's outstanding discovery.

AB - ABSTRACT: Progress in palynology in Africa during recent years shows important international aspects. The similarity of the Glossopteris flora in Paleozoic among the Gondwanaland countries, comparison of the Mesozoic microflora of western Siberia, West Pakistan, western India, Ceylon, South Africa and Western Australia on one hand, and Nigeria (west Africa) and Colombia (South America) on the other, is noted. New elements of the Mesozoic microflora are mentioned along with the record of a possible angiospermic fructification from the lower Permian from South Africa. Palynological data from African material affects continental drift theory. There are indications of contemporaneity of cold and warm climates of glacial and interglacial periods of Europe and vegetational depressions and developments in Africa during the Quaternary. A line of palynological research in Africa is suggested.
